Artic blast... Texas style

We are in day 2 of our *Arctic Blast*...  not anything like some of you are experiencing elsewhere... but life has come to a standstill here just the same. It doesn't take much sleet, ice, or snow here in Texas for schools to close and weathermen to warn people to stay at home and off the icy roads. It certainly doesn't take much to convince me.

Not only did I once experience my car sliding sideways on ice, but I have personal knowledge of at least 3 people who have either slipped in the ice or been in some accident ice-related causing broken bones and injuries - some in their own drive-ways. No, when the weather is like this, we stay inside - only venturing out to feed and water the birds, feral cats, or any other critter who has to suffer the cold. We also provide hay, blankets, and heat lamps.

Luckily for us it never lasts too long. They're predicting the possibility of not sleet again, but snow tomorrow morning which means that the kids will probably have a third day off from school (which will make them deliriously happy). But outside of the days being overcast and dreary the rest of the week, the ice will more than likely be gone.

Not here... we just close everything down (which is great as it never lasts too long)!

I did get 2 more quilts done - well, I got the pieces sewed together, but haven't done the borders or backing yet. It's rather comfortable to sew in the front room by the fire-place with the cats lounging on the chairs nearby for added support. And DH made *flan* from a recipe he saw on America's test kitchen. It was very good - and very rich.

That's about my news for the last few days. Don't have to cook tonight as I made a chicken broccoli quiche yesterday and we will have the left-overs tonight.

Stay warm and stay safe!

  1. It sounds perfect to stay inside and enjoy the warm cozy hearth in your home. And all those heat lamps you provide are must appreciated. :-)

    1. Yes, the cats love the heat lamps... and occasionally we get a raccoon sharing the heat with them.

  2. I love America's Test Kitchen, but I don't have that on my Florida cable line-up. Lawrence Welk, Golden Girls, Hazel. WKRP in Cincinnati--all those old reruns are on though.

    1. We love America's Test Kitchen too. I got my home-made granola recipe from them that we love... and DH's flan was really good too. And I'm with you, Olga... love the old reruns (watched I Love Lucy the other day).

  3. I wish I could stay home when the weather is miserable, unfortunately I still have to go to work. However, we're more prepared for snow, cold and ice simply because it's normal weather for our winters. I feel sorry for those who don't normally bad weather and end up getting hurt or in accidents because of it.

Relaxing by the fireplace with a couple of cats, sounds fantastic. Enjoy!

    1. We have those who ignore the ice and drive too fast... and those who crawl along or stop and can't get traction to start again. It's best (safer anyway) here to just close things down for a few days.

  4. It all sounds good to me. The staying inside, that is!

  5. Nora, I expect that you are used to the cold up there in Vancouver. If you stayed inside due to the weather, I imagine it would be for more than just a few days.

  6. YOU stay warm and stay safe! At least here we're used to dealing with treacherous winter weather, even if we (I) loathe it. But even here, black ice has caused a fatality either last night or this morning, just west of the city. I guess we just missed being hit by another 8 inches of snow--we got maybe an inch or two, that's all. Anyway, you're wise to stay off the roads and let road crews do their work, if your region even has any equipment to deal with this kind of weather.

    1. Texas does have some equipment to deal with the snow and ice... but probably not enough as its not needed too often. But you can bet that DH and I stay off the roads as much as possible during this weather.

  7. It is good to stay off the roads if your not use to driving on the snow in ice. Crazy weather lately. It is nice to have a warm fireplace and kittys to relaxat home.

  8. Somehow I never associate Texas with snow and ice, but the last couple of winters have been extraordinary in the USA. Over here we haven't had much snow or ice this winter in our area, though we have some forecast for overnight as it happens.

    1. No, generally one thinks of Texas heat... which goes into triple digits in July and August. But these last 2 winters have been cold with below freezing temps... and snow and ice. Of course it's nothing like they're having up in the north east, but for us (who aren't use to it) it's miserable... and dangerous (although I imagine it's dangerous for everyone no matter where you live). I hope you don't get too much snow tonight in your area... although it's not generally the snow that's the problem, it's the ice.
