hatch peppers, grandkids, and silly cats...

hatch chili peppers

It's Hatch Pepper time at Central Market! Picked up some roasted hatch peppers, some hatch pepper sauce, HP cheese, HP tortillas, and HP crab cakes this week.

Had the crab cakes Thursday with some fresh steamed asparagus and brown butter. Then made scrambled eggs with roasted hatch peppers and HP cheese, rolled into puffy HP tortillas topped with mild HP sauce last night. Delicious! (Can you tell we really like Hatch Peppers?)

They are good in almost everything. We've tried samples in biscuits and cornbread, brownies and chocolate chip cookies, etc. I will admit that they have Hatch chili pepper ice-cream and we haven't tried that. But most things are done with either mild or hot varieties and they are marked. We do "mild".

Next is a picture of grand daughter getting her hair trimmed. Apparently she enjoys the experience.

She will be 3 in a few months...

The kids today enjoy experiences that we (or I and my kids) never experienced... like going to professionals to get our hair cut or nails done, massages and spas, etc. Not saying that I've never done this, but certainly never did as a child.

Of course they also have the advantage of being born in the technological age and having their hands on computers and cell phones almost from birth. They are the "digital natives". I find that if I can't do something on my computer or cell phone, I just have to ask a grandchild.

The inside cats are doing fine... Tux was acting strange for a while after Molly passed, but he seems to be over it.  He was grumpy and always looking upset. He's a sweet cat... a little needy, but he also has a lot of "attitude" (or "cat-ti-tude as the case may be)... and is easily put off. If he's laying on my lap and another cat comes by, I can't acknowledge them or he will get pissed and walk away. May be he's a bit narcissistic?

Then there's Julie...

Julie is Tux's sister and she's very playful. She will start flying around the house... climb up the backs of chairs, and generally act silly. I caught her here as she was in one of her silly moods.

Julie is our 'counter cat'.  A few years ago she decided to claim the kitchen counter as her own and nothing we did discouraged her. Using a spray bottle will get her off for the moment, but as soon as we leave, she's back. Extremely persistent. After a while we gave up and now we put a small quilt on the end of the counter and that's her spot... for the most part.

Have a great Sunday!

  1. Almost every cat I've known find counters fair territory. When Toby, the feral kitten arrived we had two older cats who counted the counters as part of their territory. Toby never did, just as he never accepted table food. I did catch him one time easing a bag of defrosting chicken over the edge of a counter, but my rebuke seems to have cured him of that. The theory is that my picking him up at four weeks made me the mother and he "listens" to me. He does catch the occasional mouse, but does not know how to kill them. We carry him outside to drop his catch, and life goes on.

    1. Joanne, I like the story about Toby (we had a beautiful Irish Setter named Toby... but that's neither here nor there). However... we've had all our cats (except Rose who showed up in our rose garden when she was about 7 - 'according to the Vet') since they were a few weeks old. So while the others "listen" and Julie "doesn't" we have to put to 'personality' I guess. She understands, just waits for us to leave... and then jump right back up there.

As for mice... since our inside cats (except Rose) have never been out, they would be fascinated... but would never kill or eat it. We find geckos that sneak in under the doors I guess that have been surrounded by cats and played with within an inch of their lives. I pick them up and put them outside - hoping they will survive the trauma.

  2. I've never eaten a hatch pepper, but all the options sound delish! I'd go with the mild too....my palate doesn't handle a lot of heat.

I'm not sure why but none of my cats have ever been counter cats. Saku loves to lie on the table though and gets very excited when I change the cloth. He's also much like your Tux, he tends to stalk off when another cat tries to get attention. He too, is black and white, maybe it's part of their make-up.

My mom always cut our hair, at least until I was a teenager. I tried cutting my daughter's hair once, did such a bad job of it, that she went to the hairdresser from then on.

    Have a great week!

    1. If you like roasted bell peppers, you would love hatch peppers... a little more flavor and a tiny bit of 'bite'.

  3. Your cats do definitely have personality, you can tell from their pictures. I miss having a cat of my own, but fortunately I can visit yours and get my fix! :-)

    1. You know, DJan, we can't travel much or stay too long because of the cats. We don't have a cat-sitter that we trust (outside of our kids and don't like to ask them too often). But I can't really imagine not having them. They make us laugh (they also make us cry... but that's life, isn't it?).

  4. Life with cats is never dull. I only have one, who can't decide whether she is mostly indoors or mostly outdoors. So, we accommodate her whimsy. She has us around her paws. ..

    1. rosaria, years ago we used to let the cats we had back then go outside. We loved the outside and they did too. But after several bouts with attacks from outside (dogs, critters, other cats, cars, etc.) we decided that it was definitely safer for them and all our future cats to remain inside. It's a bit sad as they have given up some of their freedom... but in trade, they are spoiled rotten, are healthy, and live what we hope are long happy lives.

  5. That's a lovely photo of your grand daughter having her hair trimmed.
Your cats really are characters, our Claude won't come inside unless we keep the doors open, which doesn't happen at the moment - too cold. But he has relented a couple of times and stayed in and enjoyed the warmth for an hour or two occasionally. So maybe in his older age he is getting wise!

    1. Diana, you may be right and Claude may give up more of his outdoor freedom as he ages. Comfort may win out in the end. But then, it doesn't always.

  6. My (0ne) cat jumped on the counter when he was mad at me. It was just as though he was saying, "I know this really irritates you and I am thinking you deserve irritation right now." He was a true curmudgeon, that cat.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Denise. I have to admit that I do visit your blog, but seldom leave comments. I will try to do better. I will say here that I agree with you about the camping. At 70, we've decided camping in tents is no longer for us...
