Halloween, pumpkins, tea cakes, and other signs of Fall...

grand-daughter

This is our youngest grand-daughter in her Halloween costume. She chose to "back the blue" rather than Spider man (who is one of her favorite Super-heroes) and surprised us all. At almost 4, she is one child that definitely has a mind of her own.

The next are some pics I took of the Pumpkin Patch at our local Central Market.

So many pumpkins...

All sizes and shapes...

It's hard to choose...

I kind of like these weird ones...

They're also pushing apple cider this week...

We haven't put out our pumpkin yet. And I will make a pumpkin custard pie with it's contents when the time comes. But I did make some caramel teacakes for tea this afternoon.

closer look at caramel centers

We love tea cakes... and have used the recipe ever since a neighbor gave it to me back in Florida when DH and I were first married. They are simple, not too sweet, and actually perfect with tea or coffee. My daughter makes them now too. She usually does a sugar frosting on hers that is delicious, but I prefer just a little powdered sugar. This caramel center is just something I came up with to try since we once had something similar at Central Market... and it was quite expensive. I remember thinking, " I can make this" - thus, my own version today.

Update on my cataract surgery:  done and done!! Next is a 6 week checkup in November. Glad that's over.

Intentionally not mentioning the debate the other night. Yes, we did listen. No, we're not commenting.... but we are praying a lot.

Missing my working on the pottery wheel and my exercise class, but we are walking at least twice a week and I've started knitting again, resumed teaching myself piano, and plan to start quilting again any day. Thank goodness for my books. Have been reading the Irish Country Doctor series... and enjoying it. Will resume my pottery and exercise classes in January.

The cats are all doing well. Inside and out. Rose continues to amaze us. She is eating well, has put on some weight, and in every practical sense, seems to be 'just fine' (at 21). I think she sometimes forgets where she is... walks into a room, looks around like she 's thinking "what was I doing?" and turns around and goes back... but I tend to do that too... so-oo ?

So yes, Fall is here! Time to put out the pumpkins and start collecting Halloween candy. And we are even having some cooler weather... which for us in Texas means mornings in the 60's and afternoons and evenings in the 70's and 80's (not triple digets!). Hurray!

The outside cats love the cooler weather! It makes them very playful and full of energy.

Have a lovely weekend and enjoy this fall weather!

  1. Our local market has piles of punkins outside, and inside. Before it's too late I must take a closer look at a pumpkin shaped and colored plant that is totally covered with large tan warts. The orange color is visible between the warts. I would like fine in a witches garden of horrors.

    1. It would, Joanne. I too seem to like the weird ones.

  2. It would be lovely if your granddaughter keeps her strong opinions (makes up her own mind) as she gets older and starts to become influenced by her peers, those in authority, etc. We adults can learn (remember) a lot from those who are so young. :-)

Mmm, yummy looking tea cakes! You always make the most delicious-looking sweets, etc. One of our directors sometimes brings in his mom's Portuguese bread, which is very slightly sweet, always incredibly fresh, and *fantastic*. (He brings in the enormous round loaves so he isn't tempted himself.)

As for fall in general: Some of the maple trees have started to turn now, it's a bit late for us. Usually Thanksgiving (October 10 this year here) is when the leaves peak, but I think they'll be later this time around, given our extended hot summer. Daytime highs now are in the 60s F, which is perfect from my point of view. All too soon we'll be in the minus digits. Ugh. So I'll enjoy fall while we have it! And remind myself that we're one day closer to spring. :-D

    1. Kim, her parents are 'strong minded' too. So when they complain about how stubborn she is, we have to laugh. They are getting their 'just deserts'!
And the teacakes are good! Your director has the right idea, bring the goodies in to the office and share the calories!

  3. What a wonderful upbeat post. And to hear that Rose is STILL keeping going makes me so happy. I am also praying hard about this awful election. Watch the PBS Frontline called "Choice 2016" if you can. It made me understand both candidates so mu ch more. It doesn't try to change minds, just gives you the facts. :-)

    1. Thanks for the tip about Frontline. I've been trying to avoid all the negative ads about the election... but will check this out.

    1. Yes, Eileen, I'm so glad it's over and done. Think I'll feel the same after November's election... or at least I hope so.

  5. By coincidence, last year my grandson also dressed as a policeman.
I dressed as a banana! My costume got many looks.
October is such a fun month.

    1. John, I think I remember that... and his parents dressed like prisoners, right? That was so cute.

  6. So glad you surgeries are over and you can get back to normal. Your granddaughter is an adorable cop.
I cracked up at Rose also suffering the "why am I here," syndrome we seniors enjoy. Glad she is doing well otherwise.

    1. Patti, Rose is doing unbelievably well for her age. But she does make us laugh sometimes. We feel it's our duty to keep her as comfortable and happy as possible in the time she has left.

    1. Thanks for visiting, Barb. DJan has a wonderful blog. And I will post the recipe for the teacakes soon... it's a simple one. I dropped by your blog today too and will be returning to visit more. I was in Breckenridge once to go skiing years ago. It was a lovely place.

  8. Good to hear that your cataract surgery came off without a hitch. Nice to have that over so you can go on to pleasanter things.

I have a teacake recipe which turns out ones that look suspiciously similar to yours. I just love them like you said---- not too sweet----quite plain, but very satisfying. I never thought of pairing them up with a filling. I need to think about that.

    1. Vic, it's a nice change to add a filling, but they are great just by themselves.

    1. Hi Friko, yes... all is well. And the tea cakes are tasty. I like to eat this caramel ones like Oreo's - take them apart and eat the center first.
