Home again... after 2 weeks in New Orleans

Christmas tree 2016

Hi! Sorry I haven't blogged in about 2 weeks, but I flew down to New Orleans to help my cousin with her knee replacement surgery. (BTW she's doing very well, but did have a hard time of it) I just got back home this weekend and am now busy catching up on reading all the blogs I missed.

My cousin, Barb,  is still working (at 73), so she scheduled her surgery during the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays. This will give her time hopefully to get back on her feet by January.

I actually flew down the day of Barb's surgery and my other cousin, Darnell,  picked me up at the airport and kept me at her place in Mississippi until Barb was released from the hospital. I appreciated her doing this so much as I love the Gulf Coast area where she lives and it was nice having 2 days to visit with her.

Now, where to start. So much to say. Besides all the adventures of taking care of my cousin (which included a middle of the night visit to the Emergency Room due to a severe reaction to Oxycodone), and another quick visit to her doctor (due to to a reaction to either the adhesive used on the surgery wound or the glue used in the surgery), we did get to visit an old N.O. icon, "Angelo Brocato's Italian Bakery".

Luckily it happened to be on the route home from the doctor's visit. DH loves the sesame seed cookies (I do too!).

And of course they have a wonderful selection of Italian and Sicilian cookies and pastries, as well as Gelato and fresh hand-made Cannolis. We bought DH's cookies and took home a selection of others for my cousin and I to try. Delicious!! This is definitely a place to add to my "have to go's" next time we visit.

My other "have to go's" include cafe' au lait at the Morning Call in City Park and several restaurants that have the best Red Beans and Rice as well as oyster po-boys! This was not a vacation visit, so happening upon this bakery was definitely a plus.

My cousin, Darnell, has a tiny little Yorkie named Titan. Here is his picture.

And Barb has 2 cats. I didn't get a pic of Anna as she stayed off on her own a lot. But here is a pic of Kuchi.

A friend of mine, Karen, picked me up one afternoon and took me for a walk in City Park. It is really the most beautiful park with all the lagoons and oak trees with their hanging moss. She and I went to high school together and later were room-mates one semester at LSUBR (back in the 60's) before she left for nursing school. So-oo... even though it was Thanksgiving week and I didn't get to see all the family in N.O., I did get to visit with 2 cousins and one friend while down there. This was more than I'd planned to do, so it was great.

And thank you all so much for all the sympathies and condolences for our having lost Rose the weekend I was preparing to leave. It was a shock... even though it shouldn't have been - considering her age. I still look for her at her place besides the Aga...

So, again forgive me for not blogging or commenting recently, but I will try to catch up in the next few days.

Have a great rest of the week!

  1. I'm glad your cousin is doing better and that you enjoyed your visit. I can see that Angelo Brocato's Italian Bakery has some good food.

  2. My goodness, what a busy time! I hope your cousin's post-surgery difficulties are over now and that she'll heal more quickly than anticipated. I'm glad you had some good stuff in the two weeks, too, besides being of help, I mean. BTW, Kuchi looks pretty darned relaxed. I don't think a cat could be MORE relaxed. LOL. Oh, and I love the name "Titan" for a Yorkie! Is he an ankle-biter? Some small dogs are, but he looks like a sweetie. :-)

One final note: Your Christmas tree is MASSIVE! I think it's bigger than my entire living area. Okay, slight exaggeration, but not by much!

    Take care!

  4. So good of you to help your cousin, and it sounds like it was good thing you were there with the reactions she encountered. New Orleans is on my bucket list of places to visit. Someday perhaps.

The tree is beautiful...it will be spectacular when decorated. Welcome home!

    1. Thanks, Eileen. DH and I usually get the tree together the day after Thanksgiving. Since I wasn't home this time, he got it on his own, but did a great job picking it out.

  5. I'm glad you are home safe. I have just spent the first night at my sister's house in Florida, and I am already used to the time change. I can't seem to help it! My blogging is getting sporadic during this time of travel, too. Glad your friend had you to be with her and help with the hardest part of knee replacement surgery. I would still miss Rose, just as you do. You're a good friend.

    1. DJan, I'm glad that I was able to do it. She lives alone and I could not imagine going through that on your own. This morning I will be reading blogs and find out what has been going on with my blog friends... and if you are visiting for a few days with your sister in Florida or spending the holidays with her?

  6. Welcome back. Considering your cousin's scary reactions, it was really a blessing that you were there. Hope she is doing so much better now and will be able to go back to work when she wants.

    1. I tend to have reactions to most meds, so unfortunately and unknown to her, she apparently does too. But she is doing well from the surgery itself.

  7. Nice of you to help out. When my husband was alive, our trip to Hartford, CT, always included a side trip to the Italian bakery.

    1. I fell in love with this bakery, Olga. If I had even an ounce of space to take something home besides the sesame seed cookies, I would have. As it was, I didn't check anything and I had 2 weeks of clothes stuffed into a carry-on that sorry to say I even have trouble these days raising that over my head to put into the bin. But someone has always been kind enough to help me with that lately.

  8. The people I got my house from had a little yorkie like that. I'm considering get either a cat or a dog sometime next year. If it is a dog, it will have to be one I can control inside the house and wont cause much damage as we don't have a fence to the yard.

    1. Either would be good company. A dog needs more care than a cat... meaning he has to be walked or have a yard... whereas a cat is pretty independent during the day. To be honest, I can't imagine not having one, but they do require some adjustments to your life.

  9. Your cousin is lucky to have you available to be of assistance during her recovery.

That city park in N.O. sounds and looks like a good place to relax. If we ever get back down there, I plan on checking it out.

  10. I fear before too much longer, I shall be going down that same path.
Your cousin is so fortunate that you were willing and able to help her recover, and also that you had a nice visit.
That is one huge tree !

    1. Are you having trouble with your knees, Jo? I have to say that the surgery is traumatic, but my cousin did really well.
