There was a time that I always made us a pumpkin custard pie for Halloween. Haven't done it in years now. But I will make some pumpkin and bat tea cakes to give to my granddaughter and the twin girls next door... as well as a Halloween bag full of candy (we no longer open our doors for Halloween trick or treaters - stopped with the pandemic and was replaced with "trunk or treat" at the schools.)
And I already had our grandson order Pepperoni and cheese pizza for tonight (no usual Sunday roast or whatever due to baking cookies!).
I did make a Shepherd's pie the other night. I make it a little different from the original Irish recipe... as I use a Pet Ritz pie crust brushed with a little bourbon, vanilla, butter, and a tiny bit of sugar. We find it makes the crust taste very home-made - got the idea from a Chef on TV. It works great!
And I've been doing a lot of reading. Now just finished "The Last Letter" by Rebecca Yarros and am in the middle of her "Great and Precious Things".
By the way, our feral cat numbers have been low lately. Only Shadow (the grey) turns up. We have however been getting a mother raccoon and her babies, as well as 3 possums, and several box turtles.

The crows continue to come. My son sent me this sign for the house.
So I will leave you with this:

Wishing you a great Sunday and a Happy Halloween!

(Update on my eye... had to reschedule my eye appointment this past week as not feeling well, but will go in this week to see what the doctor has to say)
Oh... and my youngest granddaughter makes "masks" (think I've mentioned this before?) . Anyway, she made a bunch more and brought them over for me to see yesterday. They are really good. My favorite was this one:

Rian, this was a real treat. Loved the shepherd's pie, loved the crows sign, how sweet and funny. Your granddaughter is talented too. I'm very sorry you're still not feeling well, but I appreciate the update. Nice seeing Shadow too. ❤️👍
ReplyDeleteOh, I am better, Dug... just an IBS flare-up from something I probably ate (I cheat on my gluten free on occasion)... usually lasts 5-7 days. I simply don't eat those days - just a little banana and lots of water or tea. I'm on my 6th day, so better.
DeleteYour granddaughter is very talented! What a cute mask.
ReplyDeleteGosh, I hope the ferals are okay. They need to become as resilient as the crows.
The key to happiness poster is spot on!
Her masks are really cute...
Deleteand I agree about the key to happiness poster too!
P.S. Good luck with your eye appointment.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mae.
DeleteWhat fun, and I agree that your grand is very talented. I am sorry to hear your eye appt had to be delayed. I will be glad when that ordeal is behind us.
ReplyDeleteYou and me both, DJan...
DeleteGreat to know you cook such delicious sounding things! Love the mask, and the signs to protect the kitties. Have a happy Halloween weekend. Time changes right afterwards, whoopee~!
ReplyDeleteBarbara, I forgot about the time change... thanks for the reminder.
DeleteRian, I enjoyed everything in this post. I love the little black kittie in the pumpkin. Wish everyone could see this. You must be a wonderful cook. Hope all your feral cats come back. Love the crow sign. 😂 your granddaughter is very talented. That mask is adorable! Cuter than anything in the stores. Will do a bunny post soon. 😊
ReplyDeleteHenny, I wasn't sure who this was... until you mentioned the bunny post. I will be looking forward to it...
Deleteyou saw the wild halloween decorations from my area, some people really go all out. in our town we do both, trick-or-treat, and trunk or treat. i don't know if parents of little ones participate in both. the shepards pie sound wonderful, perfect comfort on a plate for winter. good luck with your next eye appointment,,,i hope you are feeling better!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Debbie. The Shepherd's pie has always been a favorite with my family. As for the eye appointment... apparently I need another surgery in the next few weeks. Will try to keep updating.
