Halloween pumpkins...

Halloween pumpkins... can you see the serpent's tongue?

Happy Halloween everyone!  Actually we didn't get many trick or treaters last night.  The numbers have been dwindling the last few years.  Can't say that I'm upset about it.  I don't care for people ringing doorbells after dark... and don't think kids should be out on the street after dark either. But I do love to see the little ones in their costumes.  I guess the trend has gone to Halloween parties at churches and other places.  Perhaps this is safest for all.  For a while we had truck-loads of kids (literally hauled in on hay trucks, etc.) from other areas. Apparently this has stopped also.   I'd be curious to know if you had many trick or treaters in your areas?

I did make a pumpkin pie!  I'm not a big pumpkin pie fan, but I make a 'adapted' version... mainly a custard pie to which I add one cup of fresh cooked pumpkin and plenty of cinnamon and sugar.    We like it!

This morning I've already been to Yoga class, stopped by the pottery studio for a few minutes to get a few more things into the kiln, then home for lunch by 2.  Now there might be just enough time to take a short nap with the cats before having to think about supper...  ;)

a few of the cups/mugs I'm working on at the studio...

  1. -giggles- I do see the serpent's tongue!!!! ,-))

We got about the usual amount of Trick Or Treaters. Here, the younger ones come with parents. The older ones, are college students, from the college right across from us. Not a lot of them, but we are used to some.

They try to dress up, and they are actually very cute. And ALLLLLLLLL were so polite and said Thank You. Yes, even the college students! :-)

But we turned off the lights, at 8PM and watched "Charlie Brown." ,-) I don't like answering the door, too much into the night. Not at all.

    Gentle hugs,
    "Auntie"

That's how I feel too. As for the serpent's tongue, I "begged" the red wire off an electrician who was doing some work in the pottery studio. ;)

  2. I don't know how many kids made the rounds here, since I stopped giving candy out years ago. I think it's fun for the little ones, but the older kids...well, I don't think they need to be out trick or treating. I imagine parents still take their really little ones to a mall--a lot of people used to do that in Halifax, years ago when I lived there and worked in a clothing store.

BTW, I love pumpkin pie! My favourite. I cook up the pumpkin and forget the crust. LOL. Actually, I have an eggless pumpkin pie recipe that comes out more like a pudding and is quite good, IMO. :-)

Love the mugs, especially the green one!

    1. I like fresh pumpkin so what I don't put into my custard pie, I cook up with some butter, cinnamon, and sugar and eat like that. I think it's the canned pumpkin that goes into some pumpkin pies (or the spices) that make them kind of strong tasting...

  3. I'm jealous of your productive morning! :)

We didn't get any trick or treaters at our place (husband got to stay and answer the door) but I took Little Q out to my parent's to visit and to trick or treat in their neighborhood. They live only about 2 minutes away from us, and have a lot of children in their area, whereas our neighborhood is horse property (more spread out) and mostly retired couples. My parent's neighborhood has a bonfire with chili for the adults and a spook alley and lots of decorations with trick or treating from 6-8 pm - it was a fun treat for both of us. They structure it almost like a block party. My parents used to come with us; now they can't but we spent about an hour with them after we were done. :)

    1. Julia, you couldn't possibly be jealous of anyone's productive morning. From what I read on your blog, you are constantly busy. I can't even fathom doing all the things that go into your day.

But I am glad that you got to take your son off to some Halloween fun. My daughter's old neighborhood in the Hill country is like that - one big block party at Halloween - with hayrides, etc.

  4. No trick or treaters here in rural eastern Oregon. They all go to the neighborhoods in town where they can hit more houses in less time. The houses are too far apart in the country.

I do love that pink pumpkin! I am sick of cooking pumpkin. I cooked the last one yesterday and tonight I'm making muffins for the spouse to take huntingon his hunting trip this weekend.

    1. I only use the small cooking pumpkin to make my pumpkin pie... so I don't have a lot left over. I think I would like pumpkin nut bread, but so far haven't tried to make any.

  5. We had no trick or treaters--out in the country. There was a big party at the library during the regular story hour time. The kids walked across the green to the general store for some trick or treating. It is fun to see the little ones dressed up.

    1. The 'little ones' are really cute!

As for the mugs, I'm gradually getting better. Working hard on pulling better handles.

  7. I went to the local chocolate shop (to support the local business) and bought a dozen rather expensive little chocolates. I had three of them to give out to a trio of older boys and we ate the rest. At least it was good chocolate! :-)

    1. Dee, I know it's sad 'the not being safe' thing, but I'm happy not to have too many people running around in the dark.

As for the pink pumpkin, it's not really pink... (kind of flesh colored?) The only edible one (I think) is the little orange one.

    1. Thanks, Angie. According to my instructor, my cups/mugs need to be 'bigger'... at least 5 inches high. So-oo this is my new goal - big mugs. Not sure 'why' since I never use big mugs, but maybe I just need to know how to produce them? Ha! Guess what people will be getting for Christmas gifts this year?
