a little about our food life...

I'm sitting here at 11 A.M.  drinking a cup of tea and thinking that I should post this morning about food... not sure why... possibly I'm hungry.

Breakfast: DH and I have toast and coffee (sometimes tea for me) between 8 and 8:30, and usually have a light lunch around 11:30.  Some days when I'm feeling a little peckish, I'll do GF pancakes or a fried egg with soldiers... but not often.

Lunch: DH loves soup and usually his lunch is soup and a sandwich with chips. I tend more to crackers and cheese or a small salad - almost always half an avocado (love avocado).

3:00 P.M:  This  is tea time and we always stop whatever we're doing for Coffee/Tea and a snack. We do our Central Market grocery shopping on Wednesday and tend to get a slice of apple pie or cheesecake to split for that day. Otherwise, it's a cookie or whatever snack is available.

Supper is generally at 6... and very versatile. DH is making a big pot of red beans and rice today, so we know what the next 2 days' suppers will be. But I usually do some chicken recipe with potatoes and veggies. Salmon for me once a week... love it! But DH and grandson won't eat it, so it's sausage and biscuits with potatoes for them on Salmon night.

I don't do much red meat... do Shepherds pie and cheeseburgers, but little else... occasionally a roast. They do like pork chops and pork roast, so that's always an option.

New recipes are fun too. Recently tried a carrot Souffle... which sounds about as appetizing as carrot cake - but both are good!  My SIL tried it and recommended it to me about a year ago. And I had no way to cook carrots except in a roast with potatoes and onions, so I thought I'd give it a try. It's really good! More like a carrot custard. All of us liked it.

The other foods we eat on a regular basis are nuts, bananas, apples, and bone broth...

Well, I've probably bored you enough with all this food talk. But I'm going to close with a picture of the food we ate at our Anniversary dinner Friday at an Italian restaurant.

DH had a sausage entree (covered with cheese) that he loved. I had a chicken and veggie entree that I love (pasta was gluten-free)... and we had one slice of bread pudding to share for dessert.

OK, that's it... no more food talk...

Oh, but I do have to post a pic of this orange milk we recently found at Central Market. The story behind this is that when my grandson (who lives with us) was about 4 or 5, we went to Owens Farm near us and they were giving out samples of Promise Land milk. He loved the orange milk... and for years we tried to find it... with no luck. This past week we found orange milk (not Promise Land) but made at a Farm in Terrill, TX. I bought it and although he is now 23, he still loves it!  Here is a pic:

Have a wonderful Sunday... and thank you for letting me share!

(by the way, Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter are my food vices)

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

    1. Thanks for the comment, Jocelyn. I love milk (whole milk) and when I went lactose free a while back, I tried all the almond, cashew, etc. milks - which were OK... but not milk. Then I found Mootopia and realized that lactose free milk tastes just as wonderful as regular milk.

  2. Meals are difficult here. I am vegetarian. Himself is emphatically NOT. (He views vegies as the garnish on a plate that you eat around - which worries me). He has taken to having a bowl of muesli for lunch. I often have a cheese sandwich. Dinner is varied. We are both big on cooking in quantity. Left overs are good.
What is in the orange milk? And yes, I have a weakness for dark chocolate too. A big one.

  3. It sounds like a very sensible diet. I wonder what makes the milk orange. Oranges?

    1. DJan, I don't see any mention of orange - except natural flavor. But grandson loves it and I took a small taste and it does take orangey. Because it's 2% and not whole milk, it isn't as thick as Promise Land, but still good.

  4. Rian, count me in as another who very much enjoyed this food post! (I feel like I sometimes pester you to post more foodie pics,so...) Anyway, your anniversary dinner looked wonderful, and I enjoyed reading the weekly fare--but what are GF pancakes? And fried eggs & soldiers? Also, I am intrigued with that orange milk--I just had a flashback of being a kid and enjoying a little bit of TANG mixed in a glass of milk. I must have some :^)

    1. GF is Gluten-Free. This made me laugh as my granddaughter (age 10) was just filling me in on what 'certain initials' mean when playing Roblox. 'Soldiers' are toast slices cut to dip in your fried egg or soft-boiled egg. And I do remember Tang! (not sure if we ever put it in milk... think we just used water). Ovaltine was our drink when I was growing up.

  5. Never in my life have I heard of orange milk! We used to have the powdered Nestle Quick chocolate to make chocolate milk when I was little. But mostly we just had whole, unpasteurized milk from the farm. - Jenn

    1. Jenn, Promise Land had several different flavors of milk... chocolate, strawberry, and orange are the ones I remember. I think they still make the chocolate and strawberry, but I haven't seen the orange in years. And I remember Quick too.

  6. Don and I tend to have different tastes -- although I will eat his preferences and he just makes an alternative to things I really enjoy -- avocado, salmon, any kind of vegetable and grain. Melas seem simpler and simpler as we age. We do a "meatless Monday" potluck at our church once a month. Don does attend with me -- enjoying the social interaction if not the food, I appreciate that he will join me even though he jokes about stopping at McDonald's on the way home.

    1. I love bread pudding too, Joanne, and this was good... but I prefer it with a whiskey sauce.

  8. The orange milk is interesting. If the KC Chiefs football team win their AFC game, a local dairy will produce a limited amount of RED milk. It looks bizarre. I think it might be a red velvet cake flavor. Linda in Kansas

    1. I'm not sure about red milk. Strawberry milk is pink and I do like that.

  9. I've not heard of orange milk either. I like anything citrusy so I'd probably enjoy it too.
I consider myself a boring cook, and meals here are often simple. I do try to sneak in veg to my son as he's more a meat and a starch guy. AND he loves spicy food which I don't tolerate as well.
    Your anniversary looks delicious!

    1. I don't tolerate spicy food either, Mae... but I do cook a lot with onions. garlic, and green or red peppers.

  10. That does look delicious. All of what you eat. Lunch here is mostly whatever leftover you grab or cheese and crackers for me.

    1. Just had lunch, Tabor... a caramelized onion cracker with baby swiss, a half of an avocado, and about 1/3 cup of chicken bone broth. And I look forward to my English or Irish tea with something sweet around 3.

  11. It's no wonder you stay so slim and trim. You eat very healthy. I thought maybe I was the only person ever who didn't care much for salmon. We have it once a week and I will eat just a tiny piece. Dan loves it! Your food post is very interesting and fun to read. I just can't imaging drinking orange milk. What makes it orange. I will Googe it! :) A late Happy Anniversary wish. Your wedding picture is so pretty!

    1. Thanks for the Anniversary wishes, Henny. I'm not sure what makes the orange milk orange, but it does taste orangey. I can't drink it as it isn't lactose free, but I did take a small sip... and it was good.

    1. And I thought we ate early (sometimes 5:30), but usually 6. You eat supper when we're having tea... so I'm guessing you must have tea (or a snack) before bedtime? And yes, I like that milk jug too. You can return it for a $2 refund, but I kept it.

    2. i would have kept it too. it will be great for so many things!!

  15. My husband LOVES carrot cake and the soufflé sounds difficult to make. Happy Anniversary! And oh yes, I love dark chocolate too.

    1. The carrot souffle isn't really hard, Kay. You just have to cook the fresh carrots first for about 15 minutes, mash them, and then add all the custard like ingredients to it and put it into either a large bowl or individual ones to bake. (I do it in individual ramkins)
