In the top picture, I actually walked almost right on top of him and he wasn't intimidated - just looked up at me. We see lots of possums and raccoons in our yard (which is by a creek) and they they are very wary, so I was surprised at his boldness. But I took pictures and he eventually went off down the rabbit hole*.
While I was out there I decided to take some pics of our figs which are getting larger every day. Hopefully they will be ripe by next week. We have 2 fig trees; a Turkey fig and a Celeste. The Celeste are smaller and much sweeter. We generally leave the Turkey figs for the squirrels and mockingbirds... and pick the Celeste for ourselves and friends.
and we have a *Bay leaf tree* also. It does wonderfully well and supplies us with plenty of fresh bay leaves for cooking.

Aren't animal trails fascinating! The one in my yard runs down the east side of the house. The deer do not venture off to eat my flower garden on the south side. No one understands that but me.
ReplyDeleteThe *rabbit hole* is an interesting place... all the animals use it and we never know what is going to come thru.
DeleteI remember seeing armadillo corpses all over the roads in Texas in past years. They must not move very fast in any event. Glad the kitty kept her distance, though! :-)
ReplyDeleteArmadillos do make up a lot of Texas road kill. In fact, they usually have Armadillos with tire tracks over them in souvenir shops. Don't think that's particularly funny myself, but apparently some do. And the kitten did keep her distance although I'm not sure that Armadillos are aggressive...
DeleteI'm captivated by that armadillo! I don't know anything about them, have only seen them on TV. It seems surreal that they really exist...and you have one in your yard, disappearing down that "rabbit hole!" All the critters here are pretty "common," I suppose, from my perspective--though still fascinating! (I watched The Secret Life of Pigeons on CBC's The Nature of Things last night...who knew common pigeons were that interesting?)

Kim, our backyard has been a constant source of entertainment since we moved here 30 years ago. Luckily we like the critters and don't mind sharing the yard with them. And I will have to watch the Secret Life of Pigeons. Think I would like it. I have seen some of the Nature programs... like "Earth" and a few others, but haven't seen that one. There was a good one about Crows a while back.
Deleteoh that is a really big armadillo, and I love the bay trees we had them when we lived in Foresthill, CA, miss them.
ReplyDeleteWe love our bay tree. My friend and I both planted tiny ones years ago. Hers didn't make it, but ours is now way over 10 foot tall.
DeleteFor some reason there was a stuffed armadillo in the children's library in the town where my daughter was born. It was one of her first words as her older brother always pointed it out to her when we went there.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen an armadillo before except perhaps in a children's book. What an interesting looking creature, no wonder the feral kitten was fascinated.
