Another cold morning...

It's 11 F here this morning (Thurs). Hopefully this is the coldest it's going to get. Supposed to warm up by this weekend... sure hope so. We have the heat lamps on outside for the ferals, lots of food, water, and blankets on the porch. We also have a heated tent-like winter cat hut that our daughter sent us a while back that is plugged in and handy if needed.

Actually it isn't bad this afternoon. Temps up to 28 and sunny. We went out to the grocery after lunch and it really wasn't too bad. (BTW, Dug I looked for those Utz chips, but couldn't find them... did however, find and bought the VO5 shampoo.) Does anyone remember Halo shampoo? That's the one my mom bought when we were growing up and I remember that smell well.

Friday... here. Still cold.

We did go out to dinner with a dear friend and her hubby for her 79th birthday this week. She and I went to grammar school, high school, and college together, and were in each other's weddings. Lost track for a few years when DH and I moved to Florida, then Texas. Then serendipitously (is that a word?) they moved to Texas too. Now we're back - and it's as if we never parted.

The other friend I mentioned in my last post (whose birthday is coming up soon too) will be 80 next month. She was one of my room-mates in college. It's kind of a funny story as both of us were assigned rooms with people that (how do you say this nicely?) were not compatible? Nice girls, but very different ideas about fun and life.

So we decided to switch room-mates. It worked out very well and she and I have stayed friends over the years. She lives in New Orleans, so we don't see each other very often, but we text almost daily. She lost her husband a few years ago to Alzheimer's and was herself caught up in Katrina as well as another hurricane that took the roof off of the condo she lived in. So she's had to move several times on her own. But she's a strong person and seems to handle it all well.

That's about all I have to share this week. I'm still on antibiotics, but am feeling a lot better. Next Cat scan is in March...

Question This is just an 'out there' question that I've often wondered about. Nothing terribly important. But if any of you have tile showers, do you wipe them down after every shower so that mildew doesn't collect in the grout? I've always done this and wondered if others did. Of course if you don't have a tile shower (which probably dates my house), this wouldn't apply to you.

Now - just a general mention concerning all the 'stuff' going on in the world today. I saw this meme... and had to share:

But I'm pleased to learn that there are some things we can do to show how opposed we are to what's going on. It's frustrating to feel helpless...

Thanks for reading!

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

  1. Rian it's so nice to see a new post from you (and hey i got a shout out here! I'm sorry you couldn't find those Utz chips though). Your dinner with an old friend sounded nice, but I find it nearly amazing how you've maintained a friendship with someone from college for so many years. That's just wonderful. And I am so sorry about those low temps--we've had the same temps here in Pittsburgh (around 10F everyday this week until noon) but we are used to it. I'm just so glad those ferals have you. :^)

    1. Dug, we don't go out for dinner much, so getting together with her and enjoying a meal someone else cooked was great. And being able to keep contact with my old college room-mate is due to 'texting'... we were phoning for a bit, and even skyping for a while, but texting is easier and can be done anytime. I'm hoping the cold weather is on it's way out for all of us... Take care of yourself, my friend.

  2. We are finally out of the deep freeze. It was brutal, and it sounds like you're in the midst of it. Today it's hard to have such awful temps when you're not used to it. I love that meme, BTW and I am glad you are feeling better. Sending hugs!

    1. Sending hugs back, DJan! Hope you are mending well and will soon be back to hiking with your friends (but don't rush it). And on another note, it's good that you live so close to Canada... for lots of reasons these days.

  3. This winter is getting damn old. We've had more than forty days of extreme cold so far this year (0 or below during 24 hours) vs. fifteen days all of last winter.

    1. Joanne, I sure hope the snow and extreme cold in your area is moving out. But also glad you seem to be in a safe comfortable place to get through this winter.

  4. Oh, that is cold Rian, I compared it with C which we have and it's -11. Too cold for me :) Lovely you have caught up with your old friend again, make the most of them while you can. My best friend through school days and beyond has been gone for over 10 years now but I still have good memories of times with her.

    1. As you can probably tell, I don't do well in cold weather. I want to hibernate (like a bear). Luckily even though we do get some cold spells here, they usually don't last long.
I'm sorry to hear that your best friend from school days passed. We all know at our age that it's coming, but I would hate to lose these friends who shared so much with me.

  6. Our winter has been insanely cold and snowy. An old-fashioned Canadian winter...but I'm too old this now. 😁

How wonderful to catch up over dinner. Someone else cooks and does the dishes, and you have the joy of being with a good friend.

I don't have a tiled shower. When I had my bathroom redone a few years ago, I wanted something easy to clean, so went with a tub and surround combo. We have very hard water here, so I do wipe the entire thing down every day. Not sure what I'll do when it all has to be replaced, though.

I especially like that first meme. Crazy times. Take good care of yourself!

    1. "an old-fashioned Canadian winter"... brr-rr!! As much as I like Canada, I'd probably never survive your winters.
As for crazy times... unbelievable times! I can't imagine what the world is thinking about us. So embarrassing. Everything that our country stands for is being taken away. Pray for us, Kim.

  7. Great that you have daily texts with your old school friend...I have out-lived both of my email buddies who I went to high school and college with. I still have some of the old emails and we did have great giggles as we reconnected when email arrived in our homes in 2001. Now I wonder what am I saving them for? Just my pleasure I guess. And to talk with their spirits if they are out there hanging around, perhaps. I wipe down the stainless parts of shower, and where there are connections going through the plexi surrounds so water doesn't get behind it. A friend got a little squeegee to use on the plexi shower walls, and I keep meaning to get one.

    1. I like to save letters, texts, e-mails - and read them over when I feel the need to connect. So, that's why you're saving them, Barbara. And as for spirits still hanging around... I like to think that too.

  8. All of the bathrooms, at my son and daughter's, are those plastic inserts. I guess they are good for limiting mold, but I actually like the look of a tiled shower stall.
It's getting hot here in Yuma at 81F yesterday and today. I've loving the sunshine, but will head back home a week from today. It is warming up there, but may cool off to the temperatures you are experiencing 11F/-12C. I know it is going to feel downright cold to me, but at least I missed out on the frigid temps!
    Stay warm!

    1. Oh, Mae, I like the look of tile too... have it in the showers and on my kitchen counter and backdrop... but it's a pain to keep the grout clean. Wiping it down between showers helps, but sometimes it's hard to do - as we age and our backs bother us.
Enjoy your warm weather in Yuma!

  9. it's so cold here also, i have only left the house to go to the hospital. i don't remember halo products but i do remember v05, my mother used the hairspray, i think she still does. we do not have tile in the shower, ours is fiberglass and we do not wipe it after each use. my parents had tile and my father would check after each shower we took that we had wiped it down!!

    1. Debbie, we used VO5 hairspray also growing up. And probably no one puts tile in their showers anymore... too much trouble to wipe it down when you're older. But I do still like the look of it.

  10. Hi Rian, we just had a full tiled shower put in and we wipe it after every shower. Just so much simpler to take the five minutes instead of spending a lot more time once a week scrubbing off the hard water stains. As Kim said in her comment we are definitely having an old fashioned Canadian winter. Today we got up to 30°F and it felt positively balmy. I love the meme with the black cat. Some days I feel that way!

    1. Really? Well I guess I'm wrong... people are still putting in tile showers (but you are probably younger and wiping it down is still easy). As I've said, I do love the look of tile. And that cat meme made me laugh... unfortunately it's probably what a lot of us are thinking.

    2. Tile showers are pretty popular now again. Large tiles that is. Hubby wipes it down most of the time but I give it a quick clean once a week. Robin

Love the snoopy cartoon, such brilliant words.

    All the best Jan
