Clock and Christmas Elf |
So many of us these days feel that we have nothing interesting to post about... and since we're not getting out and about much, this is probably true. Those of you that have wonderful areas to walk or hike or those who have acreage with blooming plants or wildlife that can be shared seem to have an advantage.
But... even though I love to read these posts and see the pictures (where I can virtually share the experience) to be honest, I also love hearing what goes on in your daily life even if it is only what you do from dawn to dusk... or what your cat/dog is doing.
I had to laugh when I read that someone was worried about Joanne (Cup on the Bus) recently since she couldn't be contacted. I had a similar experience this week with a friend that I play Animal Crossings with. She texted me one day this week and said that I hadn't been on the game all day. Was I alright? It made DH and I laugh... as yes, I generally get on the game often, but it had been an especially busy day.
And we are also putting up Christmas decorations early this year. Usually we wait until the day after Thanksgiving (which would be this Friday anyway) when we go out and purchase a 8-10 foot Douglas fir.
We've been doing this ever since we got rid of the small artificial tree that we purchased in 1969 when the doctor told us that we couldn't fly home to New Orleans that year as I was in danger of losing the baby. It was right before Christmas and we had a 14 month old. This was supposed to be his first Christmas with his grandparents. Since we hadn't planned to be at our house in Florida for Christmas, we didn't have a tree.
So we quickly ran out and bought an artificial one from Sears. That tree lasted for many many years (even went off to college with my daughter - who was that endangered baby in 1969) before it was discarded.
But once we were settled here in Texas, we started buying 'real'... to the delight of our kids and the cats. The smell of a real tree is wonderful... and covered with all the decorations that the kids made over the years or tiny critters we bought in an old bookstore in Wales, etc. make it special. Nowadays we even put New Orleans Mardi Gras beads on it.
Since we retired and the kids no longer live close enough to help with the large Douglas Fir, we considered going smaller... and have. Now we get one only 6-7 feet - but we couldn't go artificial, tried, but returned it. I'm sure that one day it will be necessary to bite the bullet, but not yet.
This post (as many before) seems to have taken on a life of it's own. I was planning to talk about daily activities in a sheltering at home house. Oh well, sometimes the story tells itself.
A few pics of Christmas past...
Happy Thanksgiving! The holidays will be different this year, but we have our memories and the hope that things will be better next year. Sending all of you my prayer that your holidays will be healthy and safe. (Please don't let down your guard!)
Hugs,
Rian
I know what you mean about finding blog topics, and like you I enjoy hearing about bloggers' daily routines. Your photo of your black and white kitty and the festive wreath is a classic; you could put it on Christmas cards. Happy Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Terra. Our kitties have made it on Christmas cards in the past. Happy Thanksgiving!
DeleteWonderful pictures of earlier Christmases. It seems many people are decorating for Christmas earlier than usual because of needing some cheering up. I loved this post for all you wrote about, and I'll consider telling about one of my days from start to finish. Pretty boring but only to me! :-)
ReplyDeleteNot boring at all, DJan. It's nice to hear how others spend their days. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your hubby!
DeleteI'm one of those who feels there isn't much to blog about, as each seems to blend into the next. But like you, I do sometimes feel the post takes on a life of it's own and the next thing I know I'm editing it down to something more readable.
ReplyDeleteI love a real tree, but not the needles, and wrestling even a 6 foot tree would be more than I would want to do. But good for you and DH! The photo of the Christmas is absolutely beautiful, and the one with your granddaughter is pure sweetness.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving! Take care and stay well.
I know, Mae, the needles can be troublesome, but only if you let them... same as kids, cats, etc. but worth it (to us anyway). And there may come a time when we can no longer handle it... but not there yet. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
DeleteA lot of lovely pictures there. Amazing how some old decorations (or artificial trees) take on a life of their own and survive well past the keep by date.
ReplyDeleteHow true, Joanne. That old tree held lots of memories... good and bad. And it certainly gave us years of use. Happy Thanks giving and stay well and safe!
DeleteI have done most of my shopping for presents, wrapping as I go. (Both my good friend and my daughter speculated about someone wanting to slap me.) I have given no thought to decorating though. There is snow on the ground this morning -- decoration enough for now!
ReplyDeleteDecorating for Christmas did come early this year... but we don't do a whole lot. There's lights on the house and a Merry Christmas! on the door (as well as a sign that says "Face Masks Required" and one that say "Please ring doorbell when delivering packages".)
DeleteI love those photos. In my imagination, you seem to have the kind of Hallmark holiday celebrations that I, with no siblings or children and two aging parents on opposite coasts, can only dream of. Of course I know reality isn't all happy happy and can be quite different, but in a way, it cheers me to know that there are families with close ties and wonderful get-togethers.
ReplyDeleteI know Thanksgiving (and Christmas) will be different for you and your family this year, but I wish you all the best. Stay safe and stay well; take care.
Thanks, Kim. The holidays will be different this year, but we've got past memories and hopefully future ones to look forward to. I hope and pray that you have a good Thanksgiving and Christmas also... stay well and stay safe!
DeleteChristmas does seem to be coming early for most people these days. Decorating is such a cheerful thing to do.
ReplyDeleteImpressed that you can put up a tree without cat attacks. Mine tore my tree to the ground years ago and has kept me from having one since.
Oh Patti, our cats loved the tree... sometimes climbing it, sometimes pulling down the lights or knocking off the ornaments - but that was OK. It's always been a pretty big tree, so they couldn't knock it over and we were happy that they enjoyed it.
DeleteWishing you a very happy Thanksgiving!
we decorated early this year as well, tuesday was our day too!! my michael with continue to quarantine when he goes back to north carolina, so he will be able to come back on december 18th. i am so excited!!! be well and stay safe!!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you got to see your son for Thanksgiving... and that he will be able to be back for Christmas. This has been some crazy year... Stay well and stay safe!
DeleteOf course, I giggled with delight with the image of kitty in the wreath! And sweet photo of the new scooter....is it your grandchild? Love the elf on the click too. So many festive, beautiful pictures shared!!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's our youngest grand daughter last Christmas. This year we won't see any of the grandkids as their parents are front line workers. And of course this is the first Christmas ever (in our 52 years of marriage) that we haven't had cats around to play with the tree...
