As I was ironing some shirts this morning for DH and myself, I began to wonder if ironing was still a 'thing'? I really don't think my children iron. And many clothes that are said to be non-wrinkle - really aren't!
Now, I don't iron much... that's true. But there are some things that really need it. I have several summer linen shirts that I love... linen is great for summer... but they wrinkle pretty easily. The good thing is that they iron easily too. 100% cotton is also an easy iron... if you have a good steam iron.
My iron is old and if it ever died, I'd probably never buy another, but it works fine. It's a Rowenta and has served me well over the years.
And another thing - ironing is relaxing, or at least I think so - especially if you don't have much to do and lots of time.
Do you iron? Or is it a thing of the past?
my ironing this morning |
Oh, and before I close this, I have to show you what one of our neighbors did for Halloween:
He always does these extravagant things on his lawn. One year he had a huge sailing ship full of skeletons and zombies. And I think he's going to exchange out the skeleton crew for Snoopy and/or Santa for Christmas this year. He can usually use his creations for both Holidays - which is economical (and fun for the neighborhood).
Well, that's my 2 cents for the week. Our little possum is still coming round daily. He's getting bigger... and fatter each day.
Tomorrow is Friday, so here's hoping all of you have a wonderful weekend ahead. I get my flu shot tomorrow, so we shall see how I do with that. Usually I just have maybe a day with a sore arm, but my friend got hers last week and felt like she had the flu for about 3 days. Hope that doesn't happen...
Hugs (virtual),
Rian
i don't iron, never not ever!!! i tumble my shirts on fluff air, hang them, then pull them to get out any wrinkles. i have an iron but really don't like using it. you should see the decorations the people put out here, they are amazing. i don't get a flu shot, i never have. and i have never gotten the flu!!
ReplyDeleteOh, Debbie, I know some people go all out on Halloween and/or Christmas. Our neighborhood does some, but this neighbor really enjoys it and does such a creative job.
DeleteAnd when it comes to the flu shot, I won't ever miss it. Had the real flu once and was sick for about 6 weeks. Never want to get that again.
I do iron. Reluctantly. But some things simply need it. My partner's aunt (who had five children) said that she liked ironing because it was quiet and clean. I do understand where she was coming from.
ReplyDeleteYour neighbour's decorations are quite something aren't they?
EC, I do find ironing relaxing... now, if I HAD to do it a lot, I probably wouldn't, but it is quiet and a bit soothing.
DeleteIroning was never a thing for me, I don't even own one anymore. I do have a travel sized steamer, though, if I need something in a pinch. I have a good friend my age who does iron regularly, though, and has a lot of linen blouses too. She can have it! Lol.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your flu shot. I had mine 11 days ago and my arm was mildly sore for a few hours afterward, that was all. I hope you're fine too!
Thanks, Kim. I usually expect my arm to be sore... that's OK. However, since my Shingles shot had my arm so sore, hot, and red for a week, it's made me a little anxious.
DeleteIs that the Red Baron's plane? That's pretty wild! Rian, so interesting that you brought up ironing. For 30 years when I worked downtown, I ironed my own dress shirts every week. After my office went business casual around 2005, I didn't iron so much. And when I moved to my new apartment here in 2017, I forgot to bring my mop and ironing board with me. I replaced the mop with the wet Swiffer, but have yet to need that board! I almost miss it...
ReplyDeleteYes, it will be Red Baron's plane once the skeletons are out of it. And as for ironing, Dug, our ironing board pulls out of the wall in the laundry room, so it's always there and handy. But I admit, I don't do a lot of it. When we were both working, we used to take some things to the cleaners. Now we hardly ever do that.
DeleteI used to iron, but no more. Years ago I bought an iron because I thought I should have one, but I never used it and it got all grimy feeling. I got rid of it, but I still have an ironing board in my closet. And thanks for the Red Baron plane, with all the spooks in it, and the fun he and his admirers are still enjoying. I am one of them. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised my iron is still working, DJan, as it is old, but so far still works fine. One day I imagine it will simply give up the ghost (as will we all).
DeleteI do have an iron and board set up in my guest house but only use if if I have somewhere special to go. These days, that doesn't happen much.
ReplyDeleteWow your neighbor really goes all out.
I got my flu shot with no problems, just a little itching but I asked for the regular shot not the high dose they like to give those of us over 65. I had a bad reaction from the high dose one year and haven't gotten one of those since. I had fever and chills for 2 days that year.
I know what you mean, Patti. These days I can get by with jeans and a t-shirt - no special duds needed. I ironed my linen shirt to go to the doctor's tomorrow for my flu shot... (not really somewhere special, but still...).
DeleteWe never get the high dose for the over 65... the regular flu shot works fine with us.
When my kids saw my ironing board up, they knew I was pressing quilt blocks, lol. Nowadays I only iron when it's very necessary. I tend to hang dry clothes and they usually don't need pressed. And we don't go anywhere.
ReplyDeleteI love your neighbors decorations. We had many houses in town decorate with that GIANT skeleton from Costco which is almost $300. And other giant animated horrors, too. Everyone gripes about inflation but they sure went all out for Halloween. I'm kind of scared about Christmas.
Hi Miss Merry! I do iron when I'm quilting - I'd forgotten about that (probably because I haven't been quilting lately). And I have seen those giant skeletons around... not in our neighborhood... but in others.
DeleteI still iron occasionally, more in the summer time with cotton clothes & when I line dry the washing. My son scoffs at me for ironing pillow cases. I love the feel, look, smell of an ironed pillow case. I always say that I would have fresh ironed sheets put on my bed daily if I had house help. Well, that's not going ot happen anytime soon!
ReplyDeleteI agree about the ironed pillowcase... but only do it for company.
DeleteI still iron -- not nearly as much as my mother did -- but pillow cases, shirts and blouses and any other clothes that I can't get the wrinkles out of by smoothing with my hands.
ReplyDeleteThat is some amazing yard display. I like that it has a theme and that it is multi-use as well!
Always get my flu shot. And I got the latest booster as well.
When I was young, Olga, I remember my mom had a lady that came in to iron for her. We weren't rich by any means, but back then, I think it was done. And I have occasionally ironed pillowcases...
DeleteWow...Halloween wasreallysomething!
ReplyDeleteIron? That's a 4 letter word!??!!!
I think it is to my kids...
DeleteMy sister irons incessantly--her quilt squares. She wore out a twenty year old iron and I gave her mine that I never use. She wouldn't take the ironing board.
ReplyDeleteYes, ironing while quilting is necessary. Of course someone once told me that you didn't iron when quilting, you 'pressed'... ??
DeleteI rarely iron - most often I throw a damp towel in the dryer and run it for a quick cycle to get most of the wrinkles out. Funnily enough, I do iron when I'm on the cruise ship - there is a DIY laundry service and I often find some packed items get pretty wrinkled. The iron is there and it would cost $3 to run a load in the dryer as I would at home. When I was young, I used to iron every Monday after school. Dad's shirts and pants, tea towels and pillowcases, and even blue jeans. It was time I spent with my mom and I got pretty proficient. :)
ReplyDeleteHope your flu shot doesn't any serious side effects. I had both my bivalent and flu shot on the same day and I was exhausted and had two slightly sore arms.
Have a good weekend!
That damp towel trick sometimes works. And ironing with your mom sounds nice...
DeleteI'm not supposed to get any injections in my right arm, so leftie gets the brunt of all the shots. But I usually get them one at a time... never together.
those are amazing decorations! Where does he store all of it? I used to iron my scrubs, then just the tops, now not at all, but I fold the pants and hang the shirts. I might iron a dress shirt or top. I used to find ironing relaxing too. I've replaced a couple of them after they jumped off the ironing board onto the hard floor. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't store it... just picks up what he needs or gathers it from neighbors as he builds... then takes it apart after the holidays.
DeleteI do still iron, not everything but blouses and shirts that need ironing, I actually ironed a crease in my jeans to wear line dancing. :) I do a lot of ironing while sewing so keep the ironing board set up in the sewing room. Rian, I look forward to and enjoy your posts so much, how in the world did I miss so many! Just read back to where you said the little possuum was coming there to eat. Oh, he is so cute. And, that tiny white bunny! Will try to keep up.
ReplyDeleteHenny, I imagine since you sew a lot, that you do iron. And that little possum is getting bigger every day. He is cute. And I'd love to see more pictures of your bunny!
DeleteOh my gracious! That is incredible. If anybody did something like that here in Hawaii, I'm sure it would be in the newspaper for Halloween.
ReplyDeleteThere are only 2-3 articles of clothing that I need to iron. Otherwise, I don't need to which is great. My mom loves to iron everything, even those blouses I got her that don't need to be ironed. Ahhh well...
Kay, I don't iron a lot. But when I do, I do tend to enjoy it... and it's generally just a few things.
DeleteNope. No ironing since stroke, and didn't iron much before then. Thanks for the glimpse of your neighbor's Halloween extravaganza! LC at retirement daze.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting, LC. Are you on blogger? I know some are showing up as Anonymous on Blogger lately when they should be showing up otherwise.
DeleteYour neighbor really does Halloween! What fun. I have both an iron and a steamer, but rarely use them these days unless I feel it is necessary to be band box fresh.
ReplyDeleteI imagine a steamer is the new thing - to replace irons. Maybe one day I'll have to check those out.
