Thursday, March 2nd... Tornado Watch Alert!

We just got a "Tornado Watch Alert!" for our area. It's weird as although they have been predicting severe weather all day, it's been unusually quiet, no winds, very still... and very warm (80 F).

We were supposed to go have dinner at a friend's house this evening, but with all the warnings (even schools cancelled all after school activities), we rescheduled our get-together for tomorrow.

Our daughter-in-law had her hip replacement surgery Tuesday and was discharged from the hospital yesterday. She did well, but is having a bit of pain (which I guess is to be expected).

If I remember correctly, when I was growing up in New Orleans, whenever a hurricane was coming, I remember the sky turned a strange green color before it hit. Don't know if that's real or something I just saw in my child's eye... (but look at 1st sign here!)

and lastly:

Nature can be scary. When lives are lost, it's nothing to joke about. But I find that it does help to lighten the worry when things get tense. Hopefully nothing too severe will happen, but it's been a long stressful day. I hope the weathermen/women are just over-reacting. Signing off at 4 PM.

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

(Something else noticed: Feral cats seem to have disappeared. Haven't seen any all day...???)

    1. Thanks, Anni, we are fine... lots of wind and heavy rain here, but otherwise OK.

  2. Maybe the cats know something we don't. I hope they return, and I do hope you will be safe from that tornado!

    1. I think they do, DJan. When we had inside cats, they would either hide or stay close to us during bad weather.

  3. I hope all is well and there is no tornado. I've lived through three or four, two very memorable that included the basement. One I drove through, and I never want to do that again.

    1. Thanks, Joanne... no tornado in our area although the sirens went off and we were in our safe spot. Closest we've ever been was the one that hit the day after Christmas a few years ago. Our son's house shook... but the tornado came down a few blocks from his place devastating a few blocks.

  4. Rian, I like when you share stuff about the South--that's been your whole life, and I've only been south 3-4 times my whole life. (The last time was 1997.) As for your daughter-in-law's hip surgery, ouch--I remember you telling us of her upcoming surgery, can I be nosy and ask how old she is roughly? Over 40? I've known a couple people who had hips or knees replaced, it sounded pretty drastic.

    1. DIL is 54 (I think). Oldest son is 54 and they are close in age. And yes, I know quite a few with knee replacement. Both surgeries are painful for a while... but hopefully are beneficial once healed. When I was working in the Veterinary field, I always thought that bone surgeries were pretty traumatic.

  5. I hope it was a non-event for you and that you and your family are safe and well.

We're under another snowstorm warning, else? But that's easier to deal with than a tornado. Take care!

    1. It was stressful and we did have our safe place ready... but we got mostly high winds (some gusts reported at 70-80 mph), and torrential rains - but it moved fast and was here and gone pretty quick.
Hope your snowstorm warning is also a non-event.

  6. I do hope that the tornados warnings weren't escalated to watches. I've been looking to see if there is any reports of damage and didn't find anything - so fingers crossed all went well. My guess, the cats sense the bad weather and find someplace to hunker down.
The poster indicates green sky ahead of hail too, and that's been something I've noticed in the past.
    Take care!

    1. Mae, we got tornado watches all day, and then tornado warnings and sirens... but only high winds and torrential rain in our area and it came and went fairly quickly. And yes, the animals seem to 'know' or 'sense' trouble. And I was surprised to read that the green skies weren't something I just imagined as a child.

  7. even here in new jersey i heard about your weather. our son lives in austin, i texted him but he did not reply!! he rarely replies so i guess i know everything is fine!!

i read in your first reply that things are good, that's great to hear!! i think we are getting your storm tonight, just the rain and wind. i love a "good" storm...dark skies and lots of rain, ones where no one gets hurt and there is no damage!! i prefer rain in the daytime hours, when i can watch it!!

    1. I hope all is well with your son in Austin. Haven't heard about any tornadoes there, so should be good. And I used to like a good storm too... but these tornadoes bother me (especially at night when you can't see them coming).

  8. oooooh and the cats may have sensed the change in weather coming, so they took shelter somewhere else!!

  9. Spot on with the seasons cartoon, except on the Mississippi Gulf Coast it seems there is pollen of one kind or another all year round with stuffy nose or sneezing or itchy eyes!

  10. That greenish cast to the sky does happen. A number of years ago I was coming home on a stormy day, the tornado sirens started going and you know so many times nothing really happens. But the sky did turn a greenish color and so I decided this could be for real and so speeded up to get home. Fortunately we didn't take a hit, but a town about 12 miles north of us did. It's a scarey feeling.

    1. Glad you got home safely. The tornado that hit the day after Christmas a few years ago in Rowlett, TX took about 6 cars off the highway...

  11. I also remember as a child the green sky during tornado warnings...in Colorado once and several times in south Texas. Glad you are safe.
