Saturday thoughts...

I found this pic on the internet, but DH actually saw a white crow one day when he was pulling in the drive. I watched for days, but if it was there, it never came back. I believe that any creature can be born albino. It's just rare and I'm not sure how well they're accepted.

I googled it and read that they are extremely rare and occur only 1 in 30,000 to 100,000 births. It is due to a genetic mutation that prevents melanin production. Sadly it also said that it can impact the bird's ability to find a mate and also harm their eyesight.

And... in some native American tribes a white crow sighting signifies a great blessing.

We have 6-8  black crows that come by every morning and evening for peanuts and Cheetos. The other day we came home from an errand and they were all over the trees cawing... like "They're home! They're home!". It was only about 3 o'clock and not actually feeding time... but I went out and threw them a few Cheetos. They were down on the lawn before I even got back in the house.

And observing them, it's possible that they come from different groups as one can be fine feeding close to some, but chases others off or is chased off himself. I raised and bred English Budgies and Zebra Finches years ago and it was fascinating to watch their interaction. Seems like these crows also have a pecking order.

OK... just wanted to share about the white crow. Didn't mean to go on and on.

If you're still with me, I'll talk about something else... although it's not terribly exciting either. I've been baking a lot lately. Sent teacakes and home-made nutty granola to a friend last week. She was having some down days and thought it might perk her up.

And now making espresso shortbread and pralines to add to my oldest granddaughter's care package for her birthday this coming week.

Also wearing my back brace today as lately my lower back is acting up when I get out of bed. It acts like one wrong move and it'll freeze up on me. But once I'm up and moving about (albeit very slowly at first), it seems to loosen up and be OK. (Just another sign of age, I'm sure).

And remember that Halloween is coming - so please keep your inside cats in - and possibly create a safe yard for the outside ferals.

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

(For those interested, eye is healing and seems to be doing OK... but still the possibility of a 3rd surgery looms.)

  1. Rian, enjoyed reading about the white crow, and your own crow family as well. You're like Mary Poppins. The treats look tasty as well, but I sure am sorry about that back brace. Getting older can be a real chore.

    1. Dug, I do hope we see the white crow again. But I have a feeling he probably isn't accepted (lesson here, right?) The espresso shortbread cookies are my daughter's favorite. I'm hoping my granddaughter gets a few. And the back brace is called a Sacro belt and is elastic. It helps...

  2. Oh gosh, I hope your back behaves!!! I find the white crow fascinating! I hope he comes back so you can see him. When my dad was a resident at the VA home they had peacocks! And - an albino peacock! He was very independent and when ever he came up missing, they were sure he had been stolen. But he would always show back up like he had never been gone.

    1. Yes, Miss Merry, I'd love to see the white crow. Perhaps one of these days he'll turn up with the others to eat. As for the back, it has it's days... walking and being upright help. Sitting still for any length of time doesn't bode well.

  3. You are so kind to others. That white crow is going to be eyed by some predator. The good shelters do not permit black cats or dogs to be adopted around Halloween, for fear of the ritual abuse that happens. Hope your's stay safe. Linda in Kansas

    1. You know, DM, you are probably right about the white crows being eyed by predators. We have seen white feral kittens disappear through the years and wondered about that.

  4. I am always wanting to hear how your eye is doing. I do hope you won't have to endure yet another surgery. I didn't know that about white crows. Now I want to see one.

    1. The espresso shortbread cookies are really good. I put a dark chocolate piece in the middle as chocolate and espresso go so well. But if you're not a dark chocolate fan, you and skip that.

  6. Sure hope you don't have to have a third surgery. Glad you posted that about kitty cats being out on Halloween. Oh Rian, on my way to get the bunnies, on a very busy I-85, there was a transfer truck beside me and one in front of me along with several cars all travelling around 70 mph when out runs a black kitten and I watched in horror as it made it through all the traffic and off the road on the opposite side. It was a miracle. My heart almost stopped. There was no way I could stop and try to catch the kitten as we were entering the bridge that crosses Falls Lake. I prayed the rest of the way that the kitten found a safe place. So sad. That white crow is amazing. Our neighbor got a video of a white deer running through his back yard.
