Why?

Ghost when she hears the doorbell...

Actually this isn't a picture of Ghost, but one I found on Pinterest that made me think of Ghost. Isn't it strange how some cats react to certain things? When the doorbell rings Julie will run TO  the door and Tux looks up, but doesn't react. Ghost panics and runs for the bedroom. Why? Certainly no reason we can figure out. All our cats came inside from being left on our back porch by feral mothers... and all about the same age - maybe 4-5 weeks? Why some show fear of certain things and others don't is a mystery. Sometimes I think that Ghost doesn't see well and that's why noises scare her. She can see... but how well is difficult to tell.

It's been raining here for 2 days now... and forecast to continue. It's also cold... not terribly, about 32 F... which is cold enough. Between reading and watching Netflix, my grandson has been teaching me how to play "Minecraft" on the computer... and a card game called "Magic: the gathering".  Both are interesting, but very convoluted (at least to me who in general doesn't play games or cards). But I'm persevering. Are any of you familiar with these games?

I have played Solitaire and Mahjong on the computer when I'm wasting time waiting for something to finish cooking, but that's about it. If I have some time, my preference is to read, write, quilt, or sculpt. But my grandson plays video games a lot... (I guess most kids do these days) and is very patient teaching me the ins and outs. And I do believe that learning something new is good for our brain... so I'm working on it.

My sister-in-law loves to play the slots at Casinos. She goes with her friends whenever she can. Now she never brings much money, so she can't lose much... but enjoys the games, the food, etc.  I tried the slot machines once when on a cruise and found it boring. Why? When so many people apparently love casinos and gambling, it makes me wonder what's the attraction? I must be missing something...

Anyway, that's where my mind is this dark cold rainy night. Guess I'll get back to Minecraft and see what progress I can make.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I enjoyed this post about several aspects of your life. I do also wonder why our pets can react to differently to the same events. And I cannot play games on the computer; they bore me. I once worked in a casino and never once pulled a slot machine handle. I also cannot understand the draw. Interesting and thoughtful post, Rian. :-)

    1. Thanks, DJan. I guess the answer as to how one reacts or what one is drawn to lies somewhere in genetics, personality, and/or environment... but I find it an interesting subject.

  2. That about the cats is interesting. Our three cats all react in different ways to things. Ever since our Smokey came here I've felt like he could not see good. Smokey is the one that reminds me of Ghost. He even has those big yellow eyes. Our Bickett is not afraid of anything. He would not move for the devil to pass, and Dumperoo is afraid of everything. Any unusual noise or move and Dumperoo runs under the bed. I've never played any games on the computer. Probably would never be able to learn how. We have had warm weather and lots of rain lately!

    1. We had a cat (Jack) that was like your Bickett in that he was never afraid of anything... yet, he was the gentlest cat, the alpha cat in our house that we never heard "hiss" in his short 10 year life... and the cat that although we love all our fur babies, took our hearts with him when he passed.

  3. Ha, I play solitaire and mahjong too. We have been really warm but rain is coming soon, probably from the storm you just got. Cats are great mysteries, aren't they. If I tell Barney no he wants to run outside. When I let him outside if it's dark I tell him to be careful and he immediately stops and looks around and wags his little tail back and forth, listening. I have been sitting outside just to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather and to listen to the wind rustling in the trees.

    1. Oh, Linda, I do believe that a cat that you have raised from a kitten or even a cat that has lived with you for so many years does understand some of what you say. I read somewhere that a grown cat that has lived many years with someone understands about the equivalent of a 3 year old child. And like any other creature (including man) some have more understanding/intelligence than others.

  4. That is a great cat expression. I am not interested in gambling or games, really. I like to read or sew on rainy afternoons but haven't had many of those lately.

    1. Isn't that expression great, Olga? I love seeing expressive cats! Our Tux almost always looks *concerned*... especially if I'm looking at my cell phone and not paying attention to him.

  5. Same here... I found it boring (the slots) Tried it once at Las Vegas. Put in a fiver got ten. Put in ten lost all. But then I like the ambiance, the happy happy feeling that all have.

    1. Yes... boring here too. But isn't it interesting that so many find it exciting?

  6. It's funny, but this entry made me think of my Renn. I've never had a rotary telephone during the time he has been my cat, but whenever he hears on on an old movie I watch, and I watch many, he looks up. Never when an electronic telephone rings...
