bad weekend, bobcats on the prowl, and crepes!

This past weekend is one I would not want to ever happen again. Seems as though every time someone wants to help "fix" something, it turns out making it worse. At least this is what happened to me. A new doctor decided to have me try a new med to see if it would help a condition I have lived with for years.  Did it help? No! It made things a lot worse... a lot worse... so much so that I seriously considered going to the ER Friday night.

What happened was that I had a severe reaction to the new meds (or at least that's what we think happened).

And don't ever get sick on a Friday afternoon as there are no doctors available! The offices close (or at least ours do) at noon on Friday. But I finally got one office to call in a Rx... and that seemed to do the trick.

I felt bad all weekend, but by Monday, things were better... and I got to see our family physician. She's running some tests, but the possibility of it being a reaction to the meds is very real.

Next are a few pictures of bobcats in our neighborhood. The first two were taken by our next door neighbor Tuesday evening on the fence between our properties. She sent us the text and pictures.

And the next 2 are ones she had sent a while back when her husband went outside and the bobcat was in the tree behind their house hissing at him.

These cats are actually beautiful... and quite large. Most have some spots and have curly hair on their ears. You can't see this well in these pics as no one wanted to get too close. But... we came across one while walking in a nearby park a while back.  It ran almost up to us, saw us, and took off. They are generally not a danger to people, but can be to small animals, pets or feral.

DH's birthday is a few days after mine in July, so we generally celebrate with one cake. Since we didn't do anything special (except go to Ham's Peach Orchard), we didn't even get a cake this year. But son and granddaughter came by with a little bundt cake and an invitation to go out to dinner one night...

birthday bundt cake

And DH and I went to breakfast at a crepe shop we like nearby. This was the very first time we've been to an actual restaurant since the pandemic started. We wore our masks inside ordering, but planned to sit on their outside patio. However, the outside patio was packed... and the inside was empty... so we chose to sit inside. Still it was a breakthrough for us.

birthday crepes

DH had a 'lemon blueberry crepe' and I had my usual 'plain jane'... which just has cinnamon sugar dusted on top.

And I guess that's the news here. Thanks for dropping by! The days seem to be flying by this summer. Can't believe it's almost August and the kids will be going back to school in about 2 weeks. Life is so strange lately and I wonder if it always will be from now on.

Have been reading, binge-watching, and playing 2 games on the Nintendo switch (Animal Crossing and Cozy Grove)... besides usual house maintenance and cooking.  Trying to get back to proofing my sequel, but haven't been up to it - so it may not be ready until the Fall. Hard to be motivated these days - not sure why.

I did order an essential oil diffuser from Amazon and have been using it at night with lavender oil.  It does seem to help me relax and sleep - if not straight through the night - a least more so than before. I generally don't have trouble sleeping, but mine is interrupted so much during the night for BR visits due to my IC. And I sent a diffuser to my daughter also as she does have trouble sleeping (and has a stressful job).

OK, it's Wednesday... not much left to the week. Wishing you all a good quiet peaceful rest of the week.

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

  1. So sorry about your reaction and that it occurred on a Friday. Hate it when that happens. They close all day Friday here. Glad you got help.
That bobcat is beautiful. When I was reading meters, I had one rub up against my leg, terrifying me. Turns out he had been raised by the family from a baby and rather liked humans.

    1. Yes, all doctors shouldn't be closed down on Fridays... doesn't seem right. And yes, the bobcats are really handsome looking cats.

  2. Those bobcats are scary looking to me. I would think they might attack a dog as small as my Pomeranian.

I was thinking just the other day that things seem so different now, and not in a good way, We haven't eaten inside of a restaurant since very early March of 2020. My husband and I are both vaccinated and I had just started thinking it would be fun to go to dinner at a restaurant, inside would have been alright if it was an uncrowded time, it's been to hot and humid around here for outdoors for me. Well, no sooner than I thought that the next day on the news I heard that Missouri is now severely infected with the Delta variant, then two days later I heard that two friends who had been fully vaccinated both came down pretty sick with the Delta variant, even after having been vaccinated. Zoop - no more restaurant plans even with masks on and every where we go we will be in masks again. I think I had been out once in a public place without a mask and my husband had gone to the store twice without a mask--now we are back to masking when we are around anyone else. However I don't want to have to mask around my daughter, son in law, and my grand kids - ages 11 years and the newest one 6 months. I want to see them but worry what my grandson could have brought home from school, and and that my son in law is not vaccinated at all. I didn't appreciate how good we had it before covid came along, and then before the Delta variant came along.
Missouri, where I live is just teeming with the Delta variant and a lot of unvaccinated people who didn't get the old covid are getting this Delta variant and ending up in the hospitals.

If only we could click our heels and go back to precovid times.

    1. Susie, Bobcats could very well attack a small dog. Good to keep a watchful eye out in areas where they are seen.
And I know how you feel about things feeling different. We were thinking that things were getting better until this Delta Variant reared it's ugly head. Not that we 've done much yet... but were thinking about doing a little more (like going out to eat, etc.) now that most of us (family and friends) are vaccinated. But we could be going back to square one at this rate. And yes, with schools/colleges opening soon, there is the possibility of increased spread. We will continue to wear our masks for a while yet. I don't think this virus is done with us. And I'm not sure things will ever go back to how they were completely. Just hope we learned something from all of this.

  3. Rian I'm very sorry to read of your health issues... I hope that you're able to put it behind you? I have to tell you, your crepes looked delicious but I about passed out when I saw those bobcat photos! I know a lot of people live in vicinity of them (you included) but I can't imagine. I run for cover if a squirrel chatters nearby!

    1. Thanks, Dug. As for putting it behind me, I'm still working on that... but getting better. And bobcats and coyotes (the wilder of the wild things we see around here) are not that dangerous. Generally they are more afraid of you than you of them. But sure, it's best to be cautious and respect their space.

  4. so scary about the medication reaction, friday nights are the worst for having any kind of a medical problem!!

    1. I know, Debbie. It seems a bit ridiculous not to be able to find on a doctor on a Friday aftenoon. Thanks for the birthday wishes.

  5. I read recently that medicines kill more people that illnesses do and I can quite believe it. We all need certain meds but I'm fairly sure that Tom's illness was bought on by the meds he took for 20 years although of course no Dr will agree with me.
I love that Bobcat, so beautiful.
Hope you get yourself sorted out.
By the way, that last picture is how we are feeling at the moment in this heat. lol

    1. I agree that medicines can be dangerous - as well as life-savers. And I agree that long term meds can bring on problems whether doctors admit it or not. I was on estrogen for over 20 years after my surgery and I do believe that may have caused my BC. And since I tend to have reactions to most meds, my solution is to stay away from all unless absolutely necessary for functioning.

  6. We have bobcats on many game cameras around us, but no news of sightings.

    1. Ours seem to be rather bold, Joanne. We live on a creek and a greenback, so possibly this area belonged to them before us.

  7. So sorry you had a bad reaction to medication. It can happen - we know from first hand experience. And yes, never get sick on a weekend. I'm amazed at the bobcats! None around here (that I know of!) -Jenn

    1. I've had many bad reactions to meds, so seldom take them. However, my new doctor wanted me to try this, so I did - a mistake.

  9. Gosh, I'm sorry you had such a bad reaction to the drug. Been there. Of course these things always happen on Fridays, or over a long weekend. :-(

You were brave to go to a restaurant, I'm glad you were able to enjoy the meal indoors, safely! I've yet to go into a restaurant, but I AM meeting a friend at the mall next week, and I have friends coming this Sunday. Out in public we still are mandated to wear masks, and even when that ends, I will be doing so. I want to see how things go through the fall and winter before I venture out without a mask. The "experts" keep telling us that if we get infected with COVID (after full vaccination)it would be a milder infection than otherwise (in most cases). But I see someone left a comment about two of their friends becoming quite sick. So it's all still rather scary!

Also scary is the bobcat! Amazing to see....from a distance, thank you very much. Better if they weren't in residential areas, but of course we humans have encroached so much on wildlife territory that where can they go?

Anyway, take care; I hope the rest of the week and the weekend is calm and uneventful for you!

    1. We felt brave to enter a restaurant after all this time - and we were the only ones entering with a mask. We went there because they have a large outside eating patio... but everyone was outside! So we sat at a corner table inside in the back with no one around. It was fine. And we have been walking in the mall (with our masks)... there some have masks, some don't. And yes, although fully vaccinated, there is still a chance we could pick up the virus (or spread it apparently).
As for the bobcat, we live on a creek and a greenback area and I'm sure they were here long before us. In general, we don't bother them and they don't bother us.

  10. I hope the doc is able to determine what caused the reaction to the meds. That is scary!

Happy Birthday to you and your DH. Enjoy the cake!

    1. We 'think' we know why the reaction occurred... but may never know for sure. And believe me, I will never take that again! (added to my list of 'never agains')

  11. I'm beginning to see more people wearing masks again. I had dropped mine but it's now become a fixture when I'm going inside anywhere with people I don't know. So sorry to hear about your reaction to that medicine. I wish doctors would be more aware of how their "miracle" cures affect us regular people. And those bobcats are actually beautiful to my eyes!

    1. Yes, doctors seem to know only what the Pharmacy reps tell them... and that's not always completely accurate.... unless it's something that has been used and known reliable for years. And I guess even then some people may have a bad reaction. Best to put as little chemicals into your body as possible (IMO anyway). And I do agree the bobcats are good looking animals!

  13. I always enjoy your posts. I am amazed at the pictures of the Bobcat. Kinda gives me a chill, but it is so beautiful! Just can't imagine seeing one so close. It looks really big. You're right about getting sick on a Friday...and that's usually when it happens. We have a new urgent care type office in town now which is good, but I'm not crazy about going there. Happy Birthday to you and your husband. How sweet of your son and granddaughter to bring the cute little cake. I love the poster at the end...that's usually how I feel. :)

And yes, the bobcats are beautiful... with their curly ears and spots. And yes, getting sick on a Friday is the pits! Glad you have an urgent care. We probably have those too... although I've never been to one. Thanks for the birthday wishes!

  15. Sadly I know exactly where you come from with broken sleep and with reactions to medication. I sprinkle lavender oil on my pillow which seems to help. A bit.
Bob cats are exotica to me - and so very beautiful.
A very happy birthday to both of you. Love that final cat too (and plead guilty).

    1. It's so strange and maybe it's an old age thing with me. I never had reactions or allergies when young. Now I'm hesitant to take any meds. And yes, the bobcats are really handsome... and the ones we're seeing seem healthy.

  16. Dear Rian--I loved this posting as it took me through your days and I felt that I was really "walking in your moccasins" as Atticus Finch advised Scout to do in "To Kill a Mockingbird." Happy birthday belated! Happy sleep--hopefully the lavender will help! Happy new medication that will cause no allergic reaction! And . . . happy the time when you will feel equal to getting back to your sequel. I so look forward to reading it. Like you I'm having a hard time doing any writing. I keep wondering if it's time to cease writing and simply go with the flow of each day. It's been my passion. But maybe that season is over and a new season of something is on the horizon. Peace.

    1. Hi Dee! So good to hear from you. I keep you and Elisa in my prayers every night. The lavender does help a bit. So does the chamomile and peppermint tea (for sleep and for my IC). Thanks for the birthday wishes. My sequel is finished, but will be delayed due to recent health problems and the fact that my friend's (who helps me proof) husband (who has Melanoma) is having serious issues. Please pray for them. I wouldn't consider ceasing writing... just let this lapse play itself out. Writing is cathartic.
