the cats and me...

Tux and his 'how could you?' stare

I think all of you who read my blog know our 3 remaining cats; Tux, Julie, and Ghost. Of the 3, Tux is my 'familiar'... bonded to me. He seems to be the one most affected by my absences. While all 3 are affected; Julie cries and wants me to hold her upon my return (which she seldom does when I'm home), Ghost will avoid me for a bit, then gradually forgive me for leaving... and let me near her again.

But Tux has been almost inconsolable since my unexpected hospital stay this past week. Upon my return, he howls and yowls and follows me around constantly wanting to be on my lap (which he can't be because of the recent surgery). I have to put a pillow over my abdomen to protect it (Tux is 18 lbs.) He stays by my side - in the bed, on the sofa, wherever I am. If we close the door (which we do at night), he sits by the door and cries. Hopefully he will get over this as I recuperate.

Tux with his  ' you just don't understand' face

Had hoped that DH and I could have walked outside today. It's the 4th day after my appendectomy. But afraid that while the soreness is easily handled, the lightheadedness and lack of energy keeps me house bound. And I'm still having night sweats... which I think is normal after surgery... possibly due to either the trauma, anesthesia,  or the pain medication.

And I so want to go to the watercolor class I started (as well as my pottery one), but beginning to wonder if this will be possible any time soon. For whatever reason (maybe age?) I'm not bouncing back too quickly.

  1. Don't take it personally-- you'll come back just fine. I'm smiling about Tux. I've had cats give me what for when I've come home from a trip, but never Velcro me.

  2. I've wished that my two were lap cats, but not to that extent! Ha ha. Glad to hear the pain is subsiding. Likely the rest will sort itself out soon. -Jenn

  3. Sometimes it takes longer than one might expect to get over major surgery like that. Rest and listen to your body. And listen to Tux, since he seems to be making plenty of noise. You'll be back if you take care of yourself today. :-)

    1. I know that's true, DJan. DH says in the 'old days' I'd still be in the hospital... which is probably true. And yes, Tux wants me laying down or sitting down with him next to me all day.

  4. Awww, Tux is a sweet momma's boy. I didn't realize he was 18 pounds, though! (Or had forgotten he was that big.) No wonder you need a pillow on your abdomen. I hope he settles down soon.

As for your recovery, not even I would be up and running the roads 4 days after surgery, and I'm in my early 50s. Have patience with yourself and please don't overdo things; that only will set back the recovery time.

    Purrs from my boys!

  5. Pretty sure your body will tell you what to do and not do. Listen to it and try to be patient. Interesting the 3 different welcome backs. Minnie is glued to me when I am here but when I left for 10 days, the sitter rarely saw her and when I came home she gave me a look like-"Oh, you've been to the store?" Cats are facinating, fun creatures.

    1. Yes, they are, Patti. And each has their own individual personality. I don't know if Tux is worried about me or about what he would do without me, but he is definitely concerned.

  6. Obviously Tux cares very much for you and wants to help you regain your health. Take it easy, listen to what your body is telling you, and I'm sure you'll on the mend very soon.

    Enjoy the cat cuddles!

    1. Thanks, I do try to listen to my body. As for Tux, he and his brother, Jack, were very close since birth. When Jack died a few years ago at 10, we worried about Tux, but he seemed to do alright. Perhaps he transferred his closeness to Jack to me?

  7. I have to say you are lucky to have cats that like to cuddle, Barney the last cat left was left here and we adopted him and he doesn't like to cuddle with me at all, but follows dh everywhere he goes and cuddles with him, he is a man cat. take it easy and don't do any lifting for several weeks, I think after about a week you'll see a difference in your energy levels.
