nothing especially interesting... just life as I know it

geese on campus

On the campus where the pottery studio is there are geese... lots of geese!  I took this pic as I walked out on the back patio and was looking through the gate. There were more than you can see in the picture but my panoramic shots don't work very well. Anyway, I counted about 24. I like them, but they are noisy... and will chase you if they get the chance.

Last Spring there were lots of little gooslings (?), but they seem to have disappeared. Someone said that the large number of water turtles in the lake (in the background) may have eaten them... (yuck!).

OK... back to my bookshelf barnyard:

my chickens are growing in number

one chicken escaped to join 'the reader'...

these are awaiting bookend that is currently in kiln

Once my bookend base is fired (its in the kiln), I plan to put 'the reader' on it... with or without chicken.

and lastly, with Fall approaching, I sculpted a few pumpkins - just for the fun of it.

pumpkins!

These need another coat of underglaze, then need to be fired, and blackbird stain applied. I will post a picture when they are finished.

My red bell peppers are just starting to turn red. There are 4 on the plant. Hopefully they will all make it. I seem to have better luck when I take them off when they are green, but am trying to wait until they turn at least partially red. Then they can ripen the rest of the way on the kitchen windowsill.

starting to turn red

and my parsley that seemed to be dying due to the August heat has revived and is looking well again. Basil has gone to seed.

Almost time to put out the Halloween decorations! We don't do much - just a few pumpkins and a seasonal sign or two.  Will probably put these out this weekend. But I will post a pic my son had on Facebook of grand daughter playing around last Halloween.

Halloween 2016

As you can see, we all like cats!

  1. Personally, I have no problem with goslings for turtles. Although eggs succumbing to riding mowers on golf greens sounds a little more humane. But, what a waste.

    1. It's strange... or maybe not so strange, Joanne. Because around our yard, it's the baby turtles that seem to be the prey of the raccoons and the hawks.

  3. Your menagerie is quite populous, just great fun if you ask me. The one thing I don't like about geese is all their poop! :-)

    1. Yes, it is... both real and clay. As for geese poop, I haven't noticed, but I don't walk by the lake very much.

  4. I love, love, love all the little chickens! That's quite the flock you are accumulating.

I suspect you are correct, that the goslings didn't make it through the summer. We have hundreds of the birds on the nearby lake in the spring and the numbers dwindle by late summer. We have several varieties of hawks as well. The circle of life isn't much fun for little wild ones.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. No, the circle of life takes its toll, that's for sure. We've certainly seen that in our own backyard.

  5. That is the cutest little bunch of chickens! I love the pumpkins you made too! I didn't have much luck with the red bell peppers turning red this summer. Mine were better picked green too. The pepper in the picture looks really nice.

    1. Just checked the peppers. Two are now turning red. I will give them a little more time before taking them inside.

    1. I have done cats,Selina; several sleeping, one stretching, and one lying on the cup brim. But chickens are faster. Cats take a little more time. I did a head bust of a cat about a year ago... but it disappeared from the studio cart after firing??

    1. Linda, I'd be glad to send you one or two chickens. I do sell them at the Clay Club's Campus sales, but I'd be glad to perhaps do a swap with you. We do this at the studio also... swap what we each make on occasion.
As for the blackbird stain, I'll have to ask exactly what it is. It's available at the school and I use it as an 'antiquey type finish' (when I don't glaze).

    1. Yes, Briony, I did. It's still underglazed greenware and hasn't been fired yet. I'm working on one now that is a cat hanging on the side of a cup.
