birdhouse, lawn sale, cracker barrel breakfast, and birthday cookies...

moss covered birdhouse

Bought this moss covered bird house this past week for the little Wren that is always looking around for a place to nest in our yard. It may be a little too late for her (meaning she has probably already nested), but we got it anyway... another bird perhaps may come upon it.  Finding a place to hang it where it will be relatively safe from feral cats wasn't easy, but hopefully it will be alright here.

Also bought these little chicken kitchen timers over at Cracker Barrel... one for me and one for a friend.

Thought they were a cute addition to my Aga chicken collection.

We ran to Cracker Barrel this morning for breakfast so DH could try their chicken eggs benedict - a new dish that his brother had tried and liked.  It met with his approval (I had cheese grits and hot tea).

And our Home-owner's Association had their Saturday Garage/lawn/driveway sale yesterday. It went well. Reported about 20 houses participated... which isn't a large number, but OK. We've never done a garage sale before, so it was interesting. DH and I sat outside on the front lawn under a tree with 4 tables of "stuff" set up on the driveway. Got to meet a lot of our neighbors as they walked by and checked things out. We didn't have any furniture or big items, so most of our stuff was priced from $1 for tons of movie DVDs, books, etc. to $5 for banker's lamp, old land line phones (that still work), etc. Luckily it was a nice sunny cool day for the most part.

The highlight of the day was when our old next door neighbors (of 30 years) who had moved to Austin 3 years ago dropped by. They were driving by their old neighborhood and stopped to visit for a bit. So good to see them!

Today I'm making espresso shortbread cookies to send to my daughter for her birthday this week. They are her favorite!

Happy Sunday!

  1. Did you manage to sell much at your garage sale? I've done a few, but we aren't in a prime location, so we don't always do that well. I don't bother anymore, as it is a hassle to find places for the things that did not sell. Those cookies look wonderful! -Jenn

    1. Jenn, we didn't have anything that sold for big bucks... but for what we had we did OK... came away with about $60 for little things. And we plan to send half of the stuff we have left to Salvation Army and keep the other half for the next sale in the Fall. It was more of a visiting with your neighbors than making money affair. We're actually in a good location as we are close to one of the entries into our subdivision... between the stables and the creek.

  2. Those cookies look delightful! I'm glad you are far enough away that I won't be tempted. Love the cute chicken timers. :-)

    1. Shortbread cookies are always good... very buttery... and with a little added espresso powder - wow! And I thought the little kitchen timers were cute too.

  4. This is such a good post! I love the little moss covered birdhouse and it looks pretty there is the trees. We put a birdhouse way up high under the top of the well house. A day or so ago we found the birdhouse on the ground, the nest out, and little broken eggs scattered. We then found what was left of the little chickadee on the porch. It broke out hearts. Had to have been Smokey. It is hard to find a safe place when cats are outside. We love Cracker Barrel! Pecan pancakes is always my choice.

    1. I'm so sorry about your chickadee. It is sad. I would have been broken hearted too, but we have to accept these things. I've never seen the cats up in this particular tree and we hung the birdhouse a good bit down from the high branch - so I can only hope it will be safe.
Eating breakfast at Cracker Barrel always makes me feel like we're on vacation.

  5. Happy Birthday to your daughter. Sure she will love those cookies. Haven't had a yard sale since I left Florida. Like you I basically just got rid of junk and enjoyed talking to the customers. How nice that you got to see your old neighbors. Wouldn't have happened if you hadn't had the sale.

    1. It was serendipitous. If we hadn't been sitting outside on the front lawn, they might not have stopped. So glad they did.

  7. Dear Rian, those cookies look delicious and big enough to provide several tasty bites! We have a Cracker Barrel here in Independence, MO. I mostly have pancakes when I go there. Yum! I hope your daughter has a happy birthday and that she becomes deeply aware of how much she is loved by everyone whose life she has touched. Peace.

    1. Thanks, Dee. She got her cookies and was munching on them when we spoke. We go down to the hill country to help celebrate her birthday when we can... but we didn't get to go this year. However, she was with us here for Easter and that wasn't very long ago.
