flu shots, weather, feral kittens, and pottery

Would like this for my Thanksgiving Table

It's been a while since I've posted, but again... nothing terribly interesting to post about. DH and I did get our flu shots this week. Hurray! And so far, no reaction at all... just a tiny bit sore when I lay on that arm. We get the regular flu vaccine, not the souped up one for the over 65. I've heard that some do get reactions from that one and so far, the regular one has worked well for us.

We've had a lot of rain here in North Texas, but nothing like some places are getting. Florida really got hit hard with Hurricane Michael. We lived in Florida for the first 2 years after college... on Satellite Beach, then Melbourne. This was in 1968. Got to watch a lot of rockets being launched.  But in general, we never really got any bad weather... one hurricane that I can remember. Those poor people who live where Hurricane Michael hit directly on the Gulf side will take a long time to recover. They will need all the help they can get.

I know that a lot of people don't believe in Climate Change. But really... something is happening. We seem to be getting an unusual amount of catastrophic weather.

But it is October and Halloween will be here in a few weeks... and we're already seeing not only Halloween decorations,  but some Christmas here and there.  DH and I don't do a lot for Halloween... a few pumpkins on a bale of hay out front and I found a cute sign for the front door today. And of course we do open our doors for trick or treaters on the 31st. But we've gotten fewer and fewer over the last few years. I think most go to Church or School related Halloween parties these days. I think this is safer myself.

I think I've mentioned before that we have 2 black feral mama cats that have both black and Siamese kittens. The one in the back has 1 black and 2 Siamese and the one in the front has 2 black and 3 Siamese looking kittens. Here is a picture of the 5 kittens who have taken to sleeping in the kitty basket on the front porch at night. It's taken with my iPhone off the Nest Doorbell site so it's not terribly clear. But aren't they cute?

The mama didn't have those kittens in our yard... but brought them by when they were about 6-8 weeks old.

I'm finishing this post up this morning (Sunday). DH is in the process of making a huge pot of red beans and rice - my all time favorite food! (house smells wonderful) And I'm working on pottery projects... finished black birding and now all need a final firing (windchime pieces and Tiki).

My new project that I just started on this morning is kind of architectural in nature. It's 3 tiles that will sit one on top of each other on the wall and end up looking like an apartment building (I hope).

And I will leave you with my little sculpture of a fox... haven't even underglazed him yet. (Foxes are my next favorite animal to sculpt next to chickens).

Have a great Sunday!

  1. Yes, those kittens are adorable, as they always are. And I love your pretty fox sculpture. :-)

  2. Having decided to have a flu shot, I picked the high test, made an appointment. The nurse came into the the waiting room and told me, out of high test. So, Laura got her shot and I still don't have one.

    1. I'm hoping they'll have more in soon, Joanne. If not, I'd get the other. Don't wait too long.

  3. those sweet kittens, are there organization in your area that will come and neuter the ferals so there aren't so many unwanted cats ? love your fox, I could collect all of your animals, they are so endearing, we don't get flu shots; so far so good and we would definitely not get the souped up variety. what spices do you use in your red beans and rice ?

    1. As for the kittens, you can't catch them... we've tried. My daughter's family don't get the flu shots either. The flu can be dangerous and even if it doesn't protect you 100%, it hopefully gives you some immunity - so that perhaps you wouldn't get quite so sick.
The red beans have so many spices in them that I will have to email you later.

  4. I love that little fox, he's so sweet. As are the kittens.

Our Thanksgiving has passed (last weekend, in Canada), and it really struck me that our next holiday will be Christmas. It seems like it WAS just Christmas--I remember only too well that we got dumped on (snow) overnight Christmas Eve and Christmas Day everyone was digging out. It was a real mess. I'd much prefer a green Christmas this year!

Have fun with your new project; take care.

    1. Thanks, Kim. It must be an aging thing as Christmas seems to come around much too fast. I'm really not ready for Thanksgiving or Christmas... but I will be. Truth is, I love both those holidays. It's just a lot of work - worth it - but still.

  5. Need to get our flu shots, but haven't done it yet.

  6. Looks like the kitty daddy is a Siamese. They sure are cute. Certainly glad your flu shot didn't knock you out. Think it was because you got the regular shot. The heavy duty one they push on those of us 65 and older are 4 times stronger. Doesn't seem right.

    1. Actually the kitty daddy is a long haired black. Blacks usually carry the Siamese gene. As for the flu shot, I'd heard that the potent one for the older folks sometimes causes a problem. I'm sure it isn't a serious one, but since I seem to be sensitive to meds, I stick with the regular.

  7. I did get my flu shot. I need to get the pneumonia shot still. And now I hear that there is a new, more effective shingle shot.

    1. DH has gotten the pneumonia one. I haven't. For some reason I'm hesitant about that one. But we've both had the Shingles... just not the new 2 part one.

  8. That little fox is simply adorable! I like the wind chime pieces as well, I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.

Of course, I love the photo of the kittens as well. They are sweet!

    1. Thanks, Eileen. I will post a pic of the wind chimes when all put together. And I intend to take apart and redo the ones I did last year. Hopefully I've learned from my mistakes.

  9. Like you I have had a bit of a break from blogging and didn't do a post for about a month but am back now. Those kittens are so beautiful. Where does the mother get her food from, are you the only one feeding them. We don't get many feral cats over here although Polly was a stray. The tiny fox is exquisite, can't wait to see him painted.

    1. The kittens are really adorable. We think there are several homes in the area that feed the feral cats. These were not born in our yard, but they seem to stay around pretty much.
