the possiblity of dreams... and other things

My son recently texted me about how he believes that dreams are sometimes prophetic - or if not prophetic... at least a form of guidance. I tend to agree. Now not all dreams have this tendency. Some are simple re-enactments of what's going on in your life, whether it's real life drama, worries, TV shows, etc.   And some of these are jumbled up nonsense. But.... I have had dreams that helped me solve a problem or make sense out of something that never did before.

And I think that when I dream of family that has passed, it's a form of visitation. Whether or not this is because my mind wishes it to be so is of no importance - I enjoy the visit - whatever the reason.

I'm re-reading a book I read a long time ago called "Minding the Body, Mending the Mind" by Joan Borysenko, Ph.D. (Personally I think it should have been called, "Minding the Mind, Mending the Body".  But it talks about something called Psycho-neuroimmunology or PNI.  I don't intend to explain what this is... but I take it to be the study of how the mind affects the body - in this case the immune system. It seems to confirm the belief that 'attitude' is extremely important in how our body functions. In many ways we already know this, but this research into the subject tries to explain why this is so.

Many will just call this "psycho-babble" - but I find it fascinating and it confirms things I believe, but cannot explain.  Crazy? Maybe - but happy crazy.

I have always believed that my mind knows exactly what my body should do... and it knows how to mend itself... if everything is working correctly and we have the courage to trust this knowledge.  That's one of the reasons I always give my body time to recoup on it's own when sick... and not involve a doctor unless certain criteria are met (fever over 103 F, 2 weeks with no improvement, etc.) This has always worked for me for the most part. But I do realize it may not work for everyone nor may not work for me as my body ages and things no longer work as well as they used to.

But it's an interesting read.

Also just finished my new little clay critters. If you can't tell what they are, there's a seal, a chicken, and a little puffin lying on his back with his feet in the air.  They are in the process of drying... and will be under-glazed later this week. As you can see, the chicken and puffin are already almost dried, but the seal is still wet clay. The grey clay (cinco blanco) will whiten upon drying.

Streetlight Update!  Yesterday a crew came out and worked on our streetlight most of the day. I have to say it looked like some sort of electrical problem as they dug a fairly good sized hole in the area. So I feel a little better about them taking so long to replace a light bulb - as apparently that wasn't the prob. Just wish someone would have told us up front in the beginning. But hey! we're not in the dark anymore!

Oh, and I have to say that sometimes this digital world we live in  (online messages to the city and also to doctors and their billing services in particular) is more efficient than the old way (calling by phone and/or trying to reach them by mail). It's been DH and my experience lately that we get answers back faster by sending a text message than any other method of communication. Have any of you noticed this?  We've been a bit slow to connect up digitally with our doctors, etc. But once done, we can go online and send questions, messages, etc. - and believe it or not sometimes get an answer the same day.

Thanks for reading! And know that I appreciate your comments!

  1. Hurrah for the street light, at last!

I don't think the book is psychobabble at all. Mind and body are tied together, part of the whole, and absolutely one affects the other. Our thoughts create our personal realities! That's evident in how we each can have different responses to the same sorts of events or challenges in our lives. Maybe I'm digressing, though.

Your clay critters are, as always, terrific! That puffin is adorable, though my favourite is the seal. :-)

    Take care!

    1. Yes! Let their be light (again)! (thank goodness)

And yes, I agree that "our thoughts create our personal realities". We do create our lives by the choices we make and the perceptions we have.

Glad you like the new critters. I will be looking for homes for all of them sometime soon.

  2. I don't text cause I don't have a smart phone but on fb messaging it is almost instantaneous so I am assuming they are texting me; love the seal, and minding the body is one of the reasons I try to cook a variety of vegetable dishes with higher nutrition content than the usual ones.

    1. That text messaging really works. I already got a response from the question I put in to my doctor's office this morning.
As for minding the body, we try to eat healthy... but we do like goodies too. My philosophy is that as long as you don't over indulge, one should be able to eat anything (to a point - allergies and medical reasons may limit one's choices).

  3. I also am convinced that my dreams of loved ones on the other side may or may not be "real" visitations but they sure do feel like it to me. And I'm the only one who it matters to. I love your critters, Rian. And yes, I do like communicating with my doctor through the internet. It IS faster! Thanks for the great post! :-)

    1. So glad to hear that someone else is getting good results from communicating with their doctor through the internet. It's new to us and seems to really work a lot faster.

  5. Totally believe the mind can make us sicker or well. I don't have a smart phone but I do have a patient portal with my doctor so that test results are posted to my computer very quickly.
I love it when I get visitations from lost loved ones in my dreams. Real or not, they make my day.

    1. That patient portal type connection seems to work well... not only for test results, but also for general questions about after care or billing.

  6. Glad you've got the light back. The little critters are so darn cute. Will you keep these or they meant for gifts or sale?

I often wish I would dream about family, especially my parents. They rarely come though and when they do I feel blessed. Too, I can attest to the mind healing the body - ask any mom with small children, there isn't time to be sick. Now as my children have grown and I've aged, I tend to be less able to overcome the ill feelings.

So far, knock wood, I don't have the kind of relationship with my doctor to need to be able to text. Maybe his clinic does, I don't know. I attend to his office once a year for a physical, and only as needed (rarely) the rest of the year.

    Have a wonderful week!

    1. All of the above, Eileen. I use the little critters to keep, give as gifts, and sell at our annual Clay Club sale. As it says on my Cheeky Chickens site, they're hand-sculptured, one-of-a kind, happy little critters who will sit on your shelf and bring joy to your day! Would you like to give one a home?
As to the patient portal type connection, it seems to be a quick way to get in touch with the doctor or nurse if you have any questions - concerning anything at all from your own health to billing. Luckily so far DH and I don't have to go to the doctor's too often either... but sometimes with medicare there are coding discrepancies.

  7. Our brain definitely has more to do with our health and attitude and we tend to forget that. I have been dreaming more lately, but can never remember the specifics, so the dreams are not much use.

    1. I know the feeling, Tabor. Lately I can remember that my dad or my cousin was in a recent dream... but can't remember the specifics. Maybe I need to keep a pad and pencil close by the bed and take notes.
