Dh's birthday, finished sculptures, & figs!

We're having a fairly quiet Sunday... tomorrow is DH's birthday and he went to Central Market yesterday while I was at the Pottery Studio and got an Italian Creme cake. Since I have my Medicare Wellness Check scheduled for this Tuesday, I'm trying to cut back on the sweets. But I do plan on  having a small piece of birthday cake.

My playful seal sculpture and tiny fat cat sculpture both came out of the kiln this week. So my sea creatures finished pieces look like this:

and my tiny fat cat sculpture now joins my black & white collection:

Now sitting on the oxidation cart in the studio are my last 2 sea creatures pieces...

and...

hard to see as they are wrapped in plastic while drying

First attempt this semester to throw on the wheel. I did a cup and a small bowl. Clay is wet and I don't want it to dry out too fast as I probably won't get back to the studio until next Saturday to finish them off.

Tropical Storm/Hurricane Barry is the slowest moving weather phenomenon... seems like it's been around forever. I just wish it would get a move on. Keeping touch with family in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Houston, and San Antonio....

Had us in a panic when they were predicting about 26 inches of rain in either Baton Rouge or New Orleans... bad for Baton Rouge, but would be devastating for New Orleans. Hopefully it won't be that bad from what we can tell, but just wish it would get a move on and continue to downgrade.

Last pic:  figs gotten off our Celeste fig tree yesterday:

 first harvest of figs...

So, yes, the squirrels and birds are helping themselves... also the box turtles when they find them on the ground. But we were able to salvage these... and hopefully more in the days to come.

Have a wonderful Sunday! And thanks so much for dropping by. I would serve you some of this Italian Creme cake if I could... (much too much for just us). But I plan to send some home to kids tomorrow.

Hugs,
- Rian

  1. I would eat a HUGE piece of that Italian creme cake if I could. LOL. Happy birthday to your husband!

I especially love the seals and the fat cat. My goodness, they're all adorable!

Have a wonderful day, and hopefully those in Barry's range will soon see an end to "him".

    1. Thanks, Kim. If you noticed, he didn't wait for his birthday to check out the cake (ha!).
As for Barry... we just need him to fade away ASAP!

    1. It is a good cake, Joanne. I prefer Chocolate Mousse, but Italian Creme Cake and Tres Leche cakes are his favorites.

    1. Thanks, Jenn. I may have to quit sculpting and start working more on the wheel. I enjoy the sculpting, but need to work on my throwing.

  4. I love your cat sculptures so much, and your playful seals. I would pass on that birthday cake, as good as it looks, because I'm now counting my calories again until I lose these pesky five pounds. Hope Barry leaves soon, too! :-)

    1. Thanks, DJan. As you can see with the cats, I'm partial to doing black and whites... I wonder why? And believe it or not, I'm trying to play down the sugar this week since my checkup is Tuesday.

  5. Happy Birthday to your hubby. Love the momma and baby seal best but the cluster of cats on the mug is adorable. Still waiting for the remnants of Barry to either arrive or go away here in Arkansas. So far just a constant drizzle. Not complaining as the temps have been in the low 70's.

    1. Thanks, Patti. Tropical Storm/Hurricane Barry seems to have bypassed New Orleans for the most part... thank goodness. Hope it just brings less rain than predicted in most areas. I understand about it being in the 70's - great for July!

  6. That cake... okay, how big a piece did you REALLY eat? Just kidding. Me, I'd probably eat half of it. Looks so good.

  8. Dear Rian, I so enjoy figs--I've only had the dried kind, but I'm going to try and see if I can find any that are freshly picked and see what the taste/texture difference is.

As to your sculptures--they so impress me because they reveal just how fey you are! The mother seal with the pup is a favorite of mine. Peace.

    1. Dee, I enjoy fresh Celeste figs... which is what our tree produces. Cooked or dried are OK, but fresh is best. I hope you get to try some..
As for my little critters, they do bring me joy.

  9. I did not need to see that cake! I started counting calories this morning, hopefully to lose 10 pounds. How many times have I tried!! I love that tiny fat cat, and that little seal is adorable. Your sculpting is amazing. All those kitties are so cute. I like fresh figs best too...eaten right off the tree.

    1. Our fig tree is still producing... we’ve given buckets of figs away. And they are especially sweet this year... must be due to all the rain and now the heat???

  10. Oh, how lovely to actually get figs from your tree. I have a dwarf fig in a big pot and another, a Chicago fig, planted outside. Neither have ever produced edible figs. Last year the Chicago fig did put out a good many but too late so they never ripened. When I was little we had a fig tree in our yard in east Texas and my friend, Penny, and I played Jungle Girls at lot. The leaves of that fig made perfect dinner plates for our jungle lunches.

    1. The leaves are big, Vic... although the brown Turkey fig leaf is bigger than the Celeste. Our Celeste fig is outdoing itself this year...
