Now I've done it...

OK... I did something to my back yesterday. Since I've never had any 'real' back pain before...( yes, lower back is sore a lot, but nothing I can't handle)... but THIS is different. I can barely walk, hurts especially to try to stand up from sitting position  (it spasms, then subsides a bit). Right side is fine. Left side around my kidney and middle hurts like h... eck.

What happened was I was driving to get my haircut... and upon reaching my destination went to get out of the car and OMG, the pain on my left side lower back and down the middle of my pelvis hit me and spasmed! I sat back down in the car... thinking WTF (excuse my french).  Actually sat there for a few minutes and tried again... no go. Couldn't understand it. Finally made myself get up, holding my back and very slowly walked in to get my haircut.

Could not imagine why this happened. But... on my way home (and yes, I could sit and drive fine... just couldn't get up and walk from sitting position)... anyway, on my way home, I remembered something. When I was heading to my haircut, I came to an intersection where I needed to turn right... but couldn't see if cars were coming (can't turn my neck too far left), so I pulled my body forward and twisted my back to see. Bet that did it? I overstretched something.

Slept on the sofa sitting up last night (Tux stayed with me - sweet baby) with heat on my back... and am taking Tylenol. This morning it's a tiny bit better. Still spasming when I try to stand up, but not as bad or as long. It is still hard to walk (using my mother's old cane - feels like someone is reminding me of my age). I know a combination or rest and exercise is good. So I'm trying to do both. We'll see.

**DH made supper last night and brought me coffee this morning.**

If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. My daughter wants me to go to a Chiropractor, but I think I should give it a few days to see how it goes.

Well, thanks for reading. I appreciate the ability to vent...

Hugs,
Rian

  1. I'm sorry, I am smiling and I know you're in pain. Yes, that's exactly what you did, and if I were you, I'd get myself to a chiropractor right away! It will get better by itself, but who wants to go through that kind of pain any longer than one must? I've been there. Many times. :-)

    1. You are probably right, DJan... and my daughter says the same... but I tend to try to see if my body can heal on its own first, so unless it worsens, I will give it a few days.

  2. Ouch! A similar episode hit my neck years ago as I was getting off my bicycle to head upstairs to an agency I was doing some freelance writing for. Hope your pain disappears faster than mine did. After a couple months mine gradually diminished, but it was excruciating for quite some time. Prayers!

    1. I understand that... as I have just gotten over a sore neck and shoulders recently. Started about 3 weeks ago... and has finally gone away (or almost). I thought it was either caused by our old mattress or anxiety over traveling. Maybe just age??

  3. Tom has had, among many other things, lol, slipped discs in the past. He has even had a plaster jacket in the 70's. but really rest is the only cure and then trying to remember that you have to take care from now on when it is better.
Oh, doesn't it all get you down sometimes? There's always something. lol
    Get well quickly

    1. Right! I keep reminding myself it could always be worse. These are the inconveniences of age... which must be endured graciously if possible. I’m using rest, a little walking (with mom’s cane), and heat & cold therapy. Time will tell.

  4. My suggestion: Go to a medical doctor, either your PCP or preferably an orthopedist if you're allowed under your insurance plan, to make sure nothing really bad happened. You'll probably get prescribed some physical therapy ... which from my own back experience is a lifesaver. Only other advice: don't go get a haircut ever again!

    1. Will do, Tom, if not better or if it worsens in a few days. Happened on a Friday anyway... wouldn’ t you know?

  5. There are so many things this could be. See a doctor and at least let him assure you it is nothing more than a strain.

    1. My plan is to give it a few days (it’s the weekend anyway), then possibly see my family physician to get his opinion.

  6. Soooo sorry. Back pain can really lay you up. I too think you should make sure nothing like a ruptured disk hasn't happened. An x-ray would be helpful. Most docs just want to give you pain pills and muscle relaxers.
I have personally used a chiropractor for sciatica and he was a miracle worker for me. Hope this will soon be just a memory.

    1. I do worry about that, Patti... and Iam familiar with sciatica. This is very different. But Iam hoping it’s just a sprain or strain...

  7. If it doesn't ease off in a couple of days, see the doctor. See the doctor anyway, when you can walk more comfortably.

    1. Joanne, It’s very difficult to walk right now. Sitting is no problem. Getting up is extremely painful...

    2. Owie. I hope it eases up but be safe and see a doctor sooner rather than later if it doesn't. Not being able to walk is not a good thing. (Captain Obvious)

  8. when it first hurts, use ice packs (the kind with the gel inside and they have a soft exterior, I always keep one in the frig, I also make a point to sleep on my side with a thin pillow between my legs up to my knees which keeps my spine aligned. Every couple of day something hurts on me, it's hell to get old, I thought these were supposed to be the golden years. I don't trust chiropractors. Oh another thing that helps me is lie flat on a bed with no pillow on your stomach with your arms at your side and stay there for about 10 minutes. Hope you are better.

    1. Linda, Iam using heat and cold... keep a cold one in freezer too (for migraine). I’m not sure I could lay on my stomach right now - and if I did, probably wouldn’t be able to turn to get up. I expect aches and pains as we age... but I would really like to retain my ability to walk.

  9. I am so sorry this happened. Back pain is awful. Wish I had some good advice. When my back pain hit in 2015, I looked like the letter "L" turned up side down. Went to the doctor that way. I couldn't straighten up. Turned out to be three herniated disk. Will sure be thinking about you and hope the pain goes away real soon. It does sound like you pulled something when you turned to look back.

    1. Thanks, Henny. It’s Monday and I can walk fairly straight and without the cane this morning... so I’m hoping rest and walking slowly around the house is working.
