Books, cats, and other critters...

This is me on days that I've finished all the books I've been reading simultaneously.  When I read the last page, I'm like... 'oh no!'

If I'm completely out of 'real' books, I'll either have to go reread one that I've read before and liked (some stories I find can be reread countless times), or find one from a huge selection downloaded on a friend's Kindle, or perhaps... just go write my own

Today I'm reading an old book written in the 40's that one of my pottery friends loved. She found it on Amazon and gave it to me to read. She read my book, "Time After Time" and decided that I'd enjoy this one. It's called "Mrs. Mike" by Benedict and Nancy Freedman. It's about a young 17 year old girl who leaves Boston to live with her uncle in Alberta. She marries a young sergeant in the Canadian Mounted Police and they manage a life in the harsh wilderness.

I've also been reading "Educated" by Tara Westover - but don't find it pulling me back.  I'm about halfway through both books.

And I'm definitely interested in "Miss Hargreaves" by Frank Baker (that one of you bloggers mentioned in your post)!

Update:

Julie's ear continued to bother her even though I cleaned it and treated it for possible ear mites. So yesterday DH and I bit the bullet and took her to the Vet's to have it checked out. I was beginning to worry that perhaps it was an ear infection and might be causing her pain.

The Vet flushed it out, tested it for mites - found none, but did diagnose a yeast infection and sent her home with Rx Tresaderm ear drops and that dreaded cone of shame. So, we shall see what happens. The trip to the Vet's is enough to wear her out (she is 15), so she slept most of the day when we got home.

The funny thing that DH and I had to laugh about was when Julie walked into the house with that 'cone' on her head, Ghost took off for the bedroom and Tux hid behind the sofa. Don't know if the cone itself on Julie scared them or if they thought they might be next.

The unfunny thing is what such a quick Vet visit cost us ($$).

Closing with 2 pics taken recently:

Ghost and Snuffy

Visiting possum this morning

Ghost looked so cute snuggling up with Snuffy on the bed. And our visiting possum was such a chubby healthy looking little critter that I had to take his pic.

Have a wonderful weekend! And as always, thanks for visiting!

Hugs,
Rian

  1. Fingers (and paws) crossed that Julie's ear is better soon and that she's not too bothered by the cone of shame.

The possum is cute, but I'm not sure I'd want to get too close to one! Ghost and Snuffy are cuter...just saying. :-D

    1. Today is Sunday and Julie seems to feel better today. We took the cone off as she doesn't seem to be scratching at it. It may have to go back on if she starts again.

  2. I had to laugh to think what the other cats must have thought when they saw the cone of shame. And I do hope it won't be around too long. Yes, those vet visits can be staggeringly expensive. Poor kitty and family all around. Sending you lots of virtual hugs. :-)

    1. It amazes me at what things cost these days... maybe it's my age? Thanks for the hugs, Julie does seem to be feeling better.

  3. Oh the cone of shame is SO embarrassing. I hope her ear infection heals quickly. I did recommend Miss Hargreaves in my previous blog post, but sometimes I think "oh someone will hate this book." I searched online and bought a used copy, and did love the book.

    1. Terra, I think from what I've read that I will really enjoy Miss Hargreaves. The story sounds interesting (and original).

  4. Definitely hope Julie is on the mend.

I'm a book lover too and often have two on the go, and I will often turn to one I've read before when I haven't anything new to read.

    I've never seen a possum before - he's a cutie!

  6. Hope Julie feels better soon. I love the pictures. That sure is a soft comfortable looking bed. No wonder Ghost likes it there with Snuffy. That is a chubby Possum, soft Possum.

Your Veterans Day post was very nice.

    1. Ghost and Snuffy are just about the same color. Ghost used to have a flat cuddly bunny that she laid on as a kitten. She quickly grew bigger than the bunny.

  7. Hope Julie is much better soon and can ditch the cone of shame soon. Had to smile at the possum. That is one prosperous looking critter. You are feeding it well.

    1. Julie seems to be feeling better. As for the possum, he/she comes by several times during the day/night to eat... so yes, it is eating well.

  8. I always feel sorry for the one that has been to the vet and all of the others treat it like a leper, lol
I think they smell the vet odour as soon as they are released from the basket of doom. lol

    1. Yes, I'm sure they smell that 'Vet' odor... and that 'cone' scares the begeebees out of them.

  9. I am a reading addict and will reread favorites when I run out of new books. Since my stroke i read almost entirely on my Kindle or Kindle app. So much easier to deal with one-handed than real books. Hope your 15-year-old does well post vet visit.

    1. Me too, LC! If I like a book, I will reread it at some point. (And I hope to put my book onto Kindle soon). As for Julie, she seems to be feeling better.

  10. Such snuggly animals, all. Yes, I grew up whe you took a pet to eh vet only if he had been ht by a car. Otherwise you just let the pet endure.

    1. Unless it is an emergency, I tend to do for the animals the same as for us... which is to give it a few days to a week to see if the condition will take care of itself. If not, then a doctor gets involved. Money is more of an issue now that we're retired, but can't/won't let an animal suffer.
