The school situation is the 'current worry'... do you send your child off into a possibly dangerous situation? My thought is that if there is a possibility of keeping them at home, do it - to be safe. They can do online classes and even if they get behind for a year - they can always catch up at a later date - whereas if they contact Covid-19, they may never catch up... and your family may never recover.
I realize that this is just my own opinion. And everyone must make their own choices. Some have little choice - especially if they have to work and have no one to care for their kids. I understand that.
But as important as education is, it's not more important than a child's life (or his parents if he should bring home the virus).
This is where I stand... and if you don't agree, that's fine. I'm happy to agree to disagree.

For those interested, our sister-in-law (83) who broke her leg and contacted the virus while in the hospital is doing well. She is back home in Houston and seems to be recovering from both situations.

On a sad note, our youngest grand daughter's cat just passed away. Cossette (cat) was old and it wasn't too unexpected... but still our grand daughter is taking it hard... since the cat has always been there throughout her life. (grand daughter is 7, cat was 15)

And have you sent out any letters or packages lately? Letters and/or packages sent by the USPS seem to be taking a very long time to get to their destinations. I'm guessing it's due to the fact that people are using delivery service more since they aren't getting out and about... and/or there are a shortage of postal workers due to the corona virus?
A small manila envelope with masks inside took 3 weeks to get to my daughter who lives about 5 hours away but still in Texas. And a package that I mailed a week ago yesterday and paid postage for it to be delivered on Monday still hasn't reached it's destination. Tracking keeps saying "in transit" but it looks like it's stuck in a P.O. in New Orleans and just sitting there since Monday??? I'm not complaining as these are strange times and none of these things were urgent - just noticing and wondering....
Another online grocery order blunder :
I needed a little dried parsley as I use it a lot in cooking - this time I was making some oven roasted garlic new potatoes. Since I use to pick up small quantities (maybe 2 Tablespoons) when we used to shop at Central Market, I didn't know the quantity to ask for online. So I said .2 lbs.... THAT was a mistake! We laughed when we saw the quantity we got. This would last me several years - guess we will share with our neighbors again.
...and I had to share this next pic with you... as it is too funny:

The whole school thing is on my mind these days, as I'll be the one standing in the classroom. Parents now have to decide which they want to choose: send their child to school with safety measures in place, or keep them home to do online school. However, they can flip flop around and change their minds part way through if they want. It's that last part that might become problematic for planning and assessment. Our situation is likely different than many parts of the states, in that we have few to no active known cases. We have nobody in hospital and nobody has died from covid in our geographical area (two very large counties). I'm very curious as to how it's all going to pan out in September. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine your situation, Jenn. Teachers who choose to go back to the classroom need to be paid hazard pay, IMO. And I know the schools and the teachers are doing everything they can to make it safe for the kids. Still... there's a risk. My thought is to wait it out (since we have the capability to keep our grandkid home) and see how it goes. Of course our area has seen very high covid positive cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. But I will pray that all goes well for you.
DeleteI totally agree with you. I think the risk outweighs the need. As for the mail, I understand the Post Master General has cancelled all overtime and closed some processing plants so mail may take a while these days. I am not amused as I have medication floating around out there somewhere.
ReplyDeleteSorry about your meds, Patti. That is much more important than my packages which are masks for my grand daughter to take to college (she has some, I just sent her more) and some local honey to a friend in N.O. who has just had cataract surgery. I'm guessing that the postal service is overwhelmed.
DeleteI know that my grandson is very worried about going back to school. His school was supposed to open after Labor Day but they have now said online at least through October. We have a low incidence here -- probably being abundantly cautious and slow to reopen things but there is the worry of all the colleges opening soon.
ReplyDeleteThe colleges opening (as well as dorms) are a worry. Young adults (even masked) gathering IMO is a dangerous game right now. But I guess all we can do is wait and see.
DeleteI am a lover of earrings and the more zany the better, those little toilet rolls are so lovely.

I can't imagine wearing them, but they would make a cute collector's item.
DeleteThe Post Office is under attack by Trump, who wants to abolish it and turn it into a for-profit company. I had heard about these slowdowns but I only use mail to get Amazon packages, and they haven't seemed to be any slower. Thanks for all the smiles, and I'm glad to hear you SIL is doing well. :-)
ReplyDeleteI use USPS a lot... since they pick up from home. But I didn't know about any trouble with the P.O. and Trump. However, something is going on for mail to be taking so much time to be delivered. What used to take 3 days now takes 3 weeks... or certainly does in some cases.
DeleteI worry about my 10 year old grandson going back to school. My daughter is an RN and son in law is a plumber, so they already have high risk. Adding to my worry is that my daughter is pregnant. Their school district says the kids are going to be in the school when it starts in a couple of weeks, and my daughter at this point says he will be going. She works 12 to 14 hrs a day 3 days a week, and will not be able to help my grandson online with lessons. Since they have high risk jobs, my husband and I have distance visiting only when we get together, it is outside. I have asthma and diabetes, so most likely would not survive covid, or maybe there would be something we could do to help him. I alternate worrying and praying. How stubbornly and without worry our leaders make the decision that we must get the kids back in school. I fear it will turn out badly, and the darned politicians had better take responsibility for their mistake, but of course they won't if we have a lot of sick children. I pray the kids will be safe, and the teachers, too. Teachers do deserve hazard pay to teach during this covid time, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteSusie, you are pretty much in the same spot we are. DIL a RN working with Covid, son out working, and grand daughter ready to start school. Since DH just had radiation for cancer and I'm a cancer survivor, we don't do any close contact with them (miss that terribly). But they (so far) have been able to work out schedules that allow one of them to be home with grand daughter. If they couldn't do that, we would likely have to take the risk and pitch in (wouldn't want her going anywhere else). But so far, so good. These next few weeks/months should tell us something... can only hope these school openings don't make things worse. Praying for those kids (and parents & teachers).
DeleteMy daughter is currently struggling with the decision as my grandson was accepted for pre-K this fall. We've had very few cases but, of course, the virus is out there. I'm encouraging her to plan to send him, simply because I believe the risk is low. However, pre-K doesn't start until school has been in session for 2-3 weeks for older children. If there are cases in the classrooms I expect she'll make a different decision.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that your SIL is doing well. Your granddaughter has my sympathies, it's never easy to lose a beloved pet.
Stay well and take care! Enjoy the parsley. :)
Such a hard decision for parents. And yes, the first few weeks may give us some idea of how this may play out.
DeleteYes, SIL doing well! For 83, she has been through a lot and come through well.
The USPS has been losing money for years, for decades. Nothing new. But they still do a good job, imo. Especially love that first quote!
ReplyDeleteTom, I agree that the USPS does a good job. I really like our postman... so friendly and polite when delivering mail and packages. But noticed that something must be going on since things are taking so long to be delivered...
DeleteHere, our Emperor, errrrr... Governor, has said, schools can re-open, carefully.
ReplyDeleteIt is quite amazing, to hear that an 83 year old, is recovering from the Wuhan Virus. Very interesting. Thought it was supposed to be terrrrrrrible. But when an 83 year old can recover... What is that?
Pick up groceries "event"... Mine was the opposite. I wanted Confectioners Sugar, and did not understand the amounts. Got a teeny, tiny amount!!!! Just as funny, as your huge amount!!!
Love those toilet paper earrings!!!!!
At the beginning of this Wuhan Virus Pandemic, a local bakery made, cupcakes, that looked like rolls of toilet paper. Mmmmmmm... Nope, did not get any. ~smile~

We were really worried about our SIL - but apparently she had a mild case and did better than anyone expected... wish that all could be that lucky. Too many deaths.
DeleteI'm not sure I'd buy cupcakes that looked like tp either.
Love all three quotes, especially the first one. Glad to hear your sister-in-law is recovering. That is encouraging. Oh, and I feel so bad for your granddaughter. It hurts to lose a kitty cat that you've loved for such a long time. She must take after you.
ReplyDeleteWe do love our critters...
DeleteBTW, our laptop is in the shop... writing from my iPhone here. Hope we get it back soon!
awwww, the quotes made me smile!!! we experienced a fire at our business, things have bit overwhelming here. i am ready for 2021, NOW!!!!!
ReplyDeleteJust catching up with your blog and the fire. So sorry to hear about that! Our laptop is in for repairs.. so I’m a bit behind. 2020 will not be remembered well.
