food, memories, and playing with watercolor

red beans

DH made a batch of red beans and rice last week. I LOVE red beans and rice! And his is the best... even better than they serve in the restaurants at home (New Orleans). It was the perfect meal for these cold, dreary, rainy winter days.

And this past Monday would have been my sister's 85th birthday! She passed away at 51 of Cancer.  I was only 10 when she married at 19 and moved to Mexico City. But as the years went by, she eventually moved back and we were just beginning to know each other as adults when she died.

my favorite photos  (as I remember her)

Photo taken from my TV set

I watched the Inauguration of President Biden and was amazed at how well it was done (considering the circumstances). IMO his speech was excellent and the songs beautiful and appropriate (This land is your land, this land is my land...). And that poem from that young poet laureate... well, it gave me chills.

I'm sure that things will not be easy for President Biden, but just having him in charge after the last 4 years of chaos does my heart good.

And these last 2 entries are just things I like... and am willing to share with you.

sketch and water color

Practicing my watercolor (which needs a lot of work) on a sketch I had made years ago for the cover for my book... before I found an actual picture that I was happy to use. I really need to take a watercolor class one day. Started one in 2017... but  before the second class I was in the hospital with acute appendicitis.

Oh well, maybe one day.  BTW, my friend who owns a kiln fired my batch of cheeky chickens last week... (10 chickens and 1 fox) so at least they have had their first firing. They will need another after I black bird them... and that may be a while since I'm out of blackbird.

OK, enough sharing for today. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend. The weather had been a  bit bleak this week, but my concerns for our country (politics and the pandemic) seem to have lightened... :)

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

  1. I don't think I've ever had red beans and rice. It looks like there is sausage in there, too. What is it seasoned with? -Jenn

    1. Just off my head, Jenn, I know there is sausage, bacon, parsley, basil, Worcestershire sauce, Tobasco, garlic, onions, bell pepper...

  2. I have never had red beans with rice. Boston baked is what we have in New England -- every Saturday night if you are a die-hard.

    1. Olga, Red beans and rice were a Monday staple in New Orleans. Monday was wash day, so putting a big pot of red beans to cook all day was what they did while tending the wash. Even today some restaurants in N.O. only have them on the menu on Monday.

  3. Rian those red beans & rice looked really good. Your sister was beautiful, my gosh she died at 51... I'm sorry for your loss, it must've felt pretty unfair. I'm approaching 60 and starting to appreciate my time here more & more each day. Anyway, that's also a lovely pic of your granddaughter and wow Moose is big, haha--I liked your watercolor too. Hope you have a good Sunday. :)

    1. My sister was beautiful... and kind... and an Architect. I was so proud of her. She followed my dad in being an Architect and designed one of the buildings on Veterans Highway in N.O.
And yes, Moose is a big guy... but sweet as can be. Actually he isn't that big for a Great Dane. My daughter took him in a few years ago when his owners moved overseas.

  4. Red beans and rice was one of my favorites until my stomach decided it no longer wanted to handle any heat. It was a sad time as I like things with taste.

We never lose those we love. They always stay in our heart.

I thought the inauguration was one of the best I have ever seen. The relief that it went off without any seen problems was so welcome.

You definitely should continue your art.

    1. I too thought the inauguration was very well done... and yes, it was a relief that it went off without any problems. I feel that if we can just get everyone to understand that we are really 'all in this together', we may be able to make some progress towards lessening the division.

  5. The water color is lovely!

I keep meaning to make red beans and rice as I enjoyed it so much in New Orleans. It's good comfort food.

    Take care, stay well!

    1. Oh Mae, thank you. But I know it's very amateurish... but I love watercolor paintings, especially the watercolor wash look - and will continue to play around with it on my own. I buy children's books where the illustrations are in watercolor because the pictures are so wonderful.

  6. Red beans and rice is supposed to be the most perfectly balanced nutritional meal. Think I need to try it soon. Looks good.
So sorry that you lost your sister at such a young age. I really didn't learn to appreciate my sisters till we became adults. You were both lovely.

    1. I will post the red beans and rice recipe DH uses... 'with his additions' soon.
My sister and I were almost 10 years apart so she was off before I knew it. But once we were both married and having kids, we began to appreciate each other... then she was gone again. Guess I just wish she was here now so we could negotiate old age together.

  7. I really feel for your loss, and I know how much I would miss my sister if she were not around to share this time with. And that red beans and rice looks scrumptious! Thank you for sharing that original drawing used for the book, which I enjoyed immensely and look forward to the next one! :-)

    1. I am grateful that I have cousins my age that I grew up with... the 4 of us do share memories and the 'old age adventure' we're all going through. And I have you, DJan, and other bloggers that lighten the load. I do thank all of you for just being there.

  8. Sorry about your sister ... that's very young. I too love red beans and rice, but only seem to get them when we go south in the winter, which we're not doing this year. So for now I'll have to be satisfied with chili.

    1. You would think that chili was a good substitute, and DH loves Chili. I can't stand it (but it might be because I ate some once that made me very sick... and it's hard to forget something like that.

  10. Oh...I think I love Moose! He's a beauty. And that red beans and rice? Yum! Your watercolor looks great to me. And yes, Biden is refreshing after the chaotic mind of the last.

    2. Thanks, Debbie. DH does cook some things. He stuffs peppers with ground meat, rice, and pecans (among other things) and cooks strawberry pecan waffles on occasion. It is nice to have someone else cook once in a while. But yes, I can tell from your blog that you have a wonderful husband in many other ways.

  12. The casserole looks gorgeous, where’s the recipe?
Isn’t it a sad thing when you lose someone just when you are beginning to get close. Show you never to leave things too late.
