It's 3 in the morning...

Wow! It's been a long time since I've had one of these - waking up and not being able to go back to sleep at 3 in the morning.  DH and I generally go to bed at either 9 or 10 and get up around 8. And yes, I do get up several times during the night to visit the facilities... but always (mostly always) go right back to sleep. Then there are these days when too much is going on inside my head to settle back down. The reason: political chaos in our country as well as too much Facebook reading.

I deleted Facebook today as I just couldn't stand reading any more political rants. IMO Facebook shouldn't be used as a political forum. I want it for communication and pictures - especially for family and friends who live far away. But each to his own.

I know this country is divided these days. And although many cannot, I can respect your choices even if I don't agree. I can 'agree to disagree'.  Many apparently cannot. I find this sad.  But it is what it is.

Families split apart over politics. Politics! Important? Sure, but not as important as family. This country was built upon freedom of choice. I realize that some choices are very difficult to understand, but because I think differently doesn't mean I cease to love. I may never agree, but I will still love.

IMO family and politics should not be a problem... no more than religion and science. They can both exist without conflict in my mind.

What happened Wednesday was unbelievable. I don't understand how any person who loves this country could believe such actions were acceptable. Violence is never the way... and if you think it is, then something is very wrong.

Over the years I have often wondered how things got as bad as they did with Hitler. How did the people allow things to go that far? Now I know. It only takes a dangerous man in power with a following who are willing to 'do anything' to keep him in power.

What will happen now? I don't know. But I do trust that those who respect our democratic system will handle the situation in the best way possible.

Hopefully enough people realize how important it is for us to be united and not divided as a nation... and those that want to increase the division are the enemy. Political parties are not the enemy. It's those within who want to divide and conquer... the extremists.

Again... all just my opinion. If you don't agree, it's fine. But it's now 4 in the morning, so I'm going to close this and go back to bed.

Thanks for reading and giving me the opportunity to vent. Hope the rest of the week (and following weeks) go without incident. Take care, be safe... and know that we will get through this and... perhaps be better for it.

Hugs, (virtual)

Rian

  1. You hit the nail on the head with this: "Over the years I have often wondered how things got as bad as they did with Hitler. How did the people allow things to go that far? Now I know. It only takes a dangerous man in power with a following who are willing to 'do anything' to keep him in power."

I know that I, as an Canadian and watching via the news media, was appalled at what happened, as were all sane people world-wide. Not surprised at all, given the past 4 years, but appalled all the same.

I hope you get some rest and find your own peace in all of this.

    1. Thanks, Kim. Always curious as to another's viewpoint... especially from a different country. Guess I shouldn't have been surprised as you said, "...given the past 4 years", but this was taking it way too far. This time he may have cooked his own goose.

  2. It was a horrid day that made me physically ill to see such violent behavior. My neighbor, who is a lifelong Republican, was equally horrified and now realizes just how dangerous and unstable our current leader is. I can only hope that now, we can start to heal. Come on Jan 20th.

    1. Dangerous and unstable for sure. Don't know how they can let this kind of behavior go on.

  3. Vent we must. I have not deleted Facebook but rarely go on anymore b/c of all the anger and hate posted on the site. Besides, my kids hardly ever use it anymore either -- and the only reason I really want to go there is to keep up with them.

    1. Yes, Tom, I had to vent a bit so I could sleep... and I did. Texted my kids and some family to let them know I was no longer using Facebook - at least until all this toxic rhetoric dies down.

  4. Your post reflects my own feelings, with the exception of agree to disagree. I'm afraid part of the reason these individuals felt they had the right to storm the Capitol is because others agreed to disagree with them. I suspect the signs were there (as they are with individuals here in Canada), and unless steps are taken to address domestic terrorism we'll unfortunately see more of it displayed in the future.

Hopefully things will change after January 20th but I worry that the current inhabitant of the White House will continue to stir up his base. Take care and stay well.

    1. Mae, when I agree to disagree, it simply means I respect their right to think differently than myself... not to break any laws. I can't see how respecting someone's right 'to think' differently enables them to violence? Everyone has the right to their own choices... some choose badly. I've always believed one should make their own choices... AND BE ACCOUNTABLE.

  5. I truly hope that all we are enduring right now will lead to some sort of healing in our fractured country. Hope you were able to go back to sleep. I sometimes lie in bed thinking, but if I just stay right there, I do go back to sleep.

    1. Thanks, DJan. Yes, I was able to go back to sleep. When this happens, I usually give myself some time to fall back asleep. If that doesn't happen, I get up and make myself a cup of tea. This time I decided to vent as I drank my tea...

  6. These are unsettling times. I have no idea what will happen next.
To avoid splitting up with my family and my friends I ask them not to
argue about politics. it's just not worth it.
    Take care.

    1. Definitely unsettling, John. I do the same... although some will just not let it go.

  7. I hope you have resumed sleeping. I was upset that day, but I quit watching eventually, did not read Facebook and did delete it at last. Gone, gone, gone.

  9. I so agree about the Political Scene and it's Chaos and divisive nature. The Political Theater has been exhausting and scary, since the Hitler Parallels came to mind too and my DIL is a Survivor of the Killing Fields of Cambodia and she said this Administration is reminding her of Pol Pot's Regime that murdered many members of her Family before the rest managed to escape and seek asylum here in America. The Pandemic Insomnia I have and I think it's fears of the Plague worsening Worldwide and also the Civil Unrest being out of control too, scary times that the thoughts won't just cease when I'm ready for Bed. With The Book of Faces I have a Closed Page and just deleted people who got too controversial and confrontational, it worked for me since then those who get along and play well with others can remain in touch with us. Love finding your Blog this Fine Morning, Be Well and Stay Safe.

    1. I believe there is a way to 'unfollow' o Facebook so as not to hear all the political rants of some, and still not de-friend them. I just deleted the app from my iphone, but
it's still on my laptop ( I just don't check it o my laptop unless there is a specific reason - such as a family birthday with pics!)
