Mother's Day treats, plants, and face masks

Received this hummingbird mobile from son for Mother's Day. It has both a battery as well as a solar panel and lights up in the dark. We have it hanging in the tree out front... should be interesting to those who jog at night.

As for plants, we haven't been to a nursery (or anywhere else for that matter) in over a year, so I finally felt the urge to get some hanging plants for the area around the front porch. I usually do hanging 'herbs', but am willing to see what is available these days. I ended up with some trailing rosemary and a Maidenhair fern... and DH bought a Gardenia bush.

The mint  has taken over the ground cover in some areas around our house. I love the way it looks when it is so green and healthy. DH uses it in his sweet tea, but it also makes this wonderful aroma when the wind blows on the front porch.

Update on my Spinal Specialist appointment:
Diagnosis: degeneration of the spine (spinal arthritis - not unusual with age). I knew this, but just wanted him to tell me if I was doing something to cause the problem or if it was just inevitable to crop up on occasion.  I needed to know if it was best to rest and let the area heal or keep moving and not let it stiffen up more?  Apparently I'm not doing anything specific to cause the problem. It comes with age and will probably get worse.  But keeping mobile will help (lack of exercise this past year  probably wasn't good).  He gave me a prescription for 6 weeks of physical therapy after which he wants to see me again. DH and I will also try to up our walking regimen...

And... I'm making face masks again. Yes, I know they are saying that we may not need them much longer... (or at all), but we intend to wear them for a while yet. Besides, they're kind of fun to make.

It's TGIF!  Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Just because you're not required to wear a facemask doesn't mean it's not a good idea. (Is that too many negatives? The point is, I'm in favor of facemasks, at least indoors and in crowds. As my mother used to say, better safe than sorry.))

  2. I agree with you about facemasks. After an entire year without a cold and nobody got the flu, it's going to be hard to simply throw them away! Plus we are not done with Covid, whatever anybody says.

    1. Yes, I intend to keep them even after Covid to wear during flu season and when visiting grandchildren's school events. Doesn't hurt to be safe... and it's such a little thing. (Personally don't see why people get so upset over them??)

  3. i wonder if this is the post that disappeared?? I'm glad you went to the doctor, and that the problem is not any more serious. it sounds to me, from your posts, that you are pretty active, so that should help!!

your masks are beautiful and very well made. i will continue to wear one for a long while i think. i am always suppose to wear one in winter anyway, because of the flu!! have a good weekend!!

    1. Yes, this is the post that 'disappeared' and then reappeared as a draft Saturday morning... Who knows what happened, but at least it's back.
I really need to be more active, and will try to do this. As for the masks, I'm finding that wearing them outside and even in the car... seems to keep me from coughing as much?? And I do think wearing them during flu season is a good idea.

  4. I thought the face mask relaxing was premature. I went to Walmart today--wearing my mask though few were. I know all those bare faced people were not fully vaccinated. With the mandatory masking, at least we knew who to avoid. I will keep wearing mine. My doctor said he only treated one case of flu all last year. For that reason alone, they are worth it.
What a cool gift you got. You might have sold me on those solar hummingbirds. That is really pretty.

    1. I like our new hummingbird mobile too. We have feeders out, but haven't seen hummingbirds yet. I know they're around. Of course with the feral cats, maybe the hummingbirds are playing it safe. However, the Bluejays don't seem to pay any attention to the cats... just fly on down and eat from the cat bowls. (Kittens get really excited when they do this)

  5. My cousin posted a photo of the same hummingbird mobile, she also received it as a gift for Mother's Day. Very nice!
Love your masks - the material is so pretty! I intend to wear a mask in public for some time yet and most definitely when I get back to travelling.
Good luck with your physio. Hope that and more walking will help with your back issues.

    1. Mae, I don't mind wearing the masks... kind of like it (and haven't worn make-up in over a year).
Will call the physical therapy people this week and set something up. Dr. said that my BMI was fine, no smoking, no drinking, so... what I needed to do was increase my mobility by exercise. This I can do. I don't like pills and don't take anything except Vit D3.. and Tylenol when needed. He had no problem with this.

  6. I am still wearing my mask. I will go to church tomorrow for the first time in over a year -- first time it will be open but only to limited number and masks required. I went to the baseball game with Don the other day -- very limited capacity and masks were urged but we seemed to be the only ones other than employees who wore them. I will be wearing mine for a while. It almost feels like going out without a bra now.

  7. Lovely and unusual Mothers Day gift. The face masks you are making certainly bring a fun sense of whimsy and attractiveness to utilitarian objects.

    1. I get tired of the plain masks after a while and decided it would be fun to have dinosaurs and kittens, etc.

  8. That "Russian" hack seems to be over now! It happened to many of us.

    1. I hope that's true, Joanne. It sure caused a lot of problems.

  9. Your masks are lovely. I still will be wearing mine inside because only 1/3 of people have been fully vaccinated. However, I feel comfortable with the CDC’s opinion on not wring them outside.

Your family got you perfect gifts for Mother’s Day. My family also gifts me with cat related items. I love them.

    1. Yes, I feel more comfortable with a mask for the time being... for safety sake as well as it keeps me from having to wear make-up (which I hate).
And I have to say that I love my cat mugs! (not that I need any more cat related items - but they are cute)
