a boring post to be sure...

Nothing too interesting to post about this week.  Guess this could be good as perhaps life these days could use some 'not so interesting days'.

I stayed busy this week putting together a 'care package' to send to oldest granddaughter at college. Made her some home-made granola, tea cakes (which are basically frosted sugar cookies - although not as sweet), added some of my home-sewn face masks and some KN95 ones, and a few other little additions picked up at the Italian Store Eataly's at the mall.

Yes, we made it to the mall to walk this week!  We go early just as the stores open and walk both floors. We don't shop (well, not really... we sometimes buy pizza or honey or ? at Eataly's and occasionally I stop by Bath and Body shop for coffee scented candles.) I love Eataly's fresh brewed coffee (especially the espresso), but don't dare get it anymore because of the caffeine and the acid.

And I also sent my daughter something this week that I had bought earlier through Amazon. It's a thin tile that helps you locate things you often misplace. My cousin told me about this and since misplacing things happens often enough around here I thought I'd give it a try.  You can google the information at Tile.com which explains it's use.

Anyway, as it turns out, my iPhone 6 is not updated enough to use the Tile (ugh! we will have to bite the bullet and upgrade our phone one day soon). So I thought I'd send it to my daughter who keeps her iPhone current (iPhone 10 or 11 I think). And I'm pretty sure they are constantly misplacing keys or phones at her house, so maybe this will help.

Let's see...??? What other 'not so important' stuff going on?  Well, I'm making chicken salad for supper tonight. I make it with apples and pecans... not terribly original or exciting, but pretty good. And the plan is to make Shepherd's Pie tomorrow... another not so exciting entree...  but one of our favorites.

I'd better close this before I bore you to tears.... Oh! we did see a hummingbird outside at one of our feeders! That was unexpected in September. We usually see them here in May. But I read that they are on their way to Mexico and many don't leave until September (who knew?)

Also a person in the neighborhood got a good picture of a handsome bobcat in her yard last week. I copied her picture here:

well marked bobcat

That's it, my friends. I won't go into the mess our world is getting into with the vaccine and mask mandates or the abortion issue. Life has gotten a bit out of control.

But I will say that with the health issue (Covid) taking so many people's lives, I'm all for mandates to save lives (people have the right to live). And as for the abortion issue, although I can't imagine that I could ever consider an abortion, there are circumstances that I do believe may warrant it. And I'm one of those that consider myself both pro-life and pro-choice (don't see the difference there).  (And as for the vigilante aspect of turning people in for money - appalling!)

Probably shouldn't have even said this much as I'm sure it may 'offend' some. But it's how I feel... and it is my blog.

Thanks for reading my ramblings. I appreciate having a way to express myself...  'not so important' as well as 'extremely important' issues.

Hugs (virtual),
Rian

*Update: From what I can tell, all family and friends in New Orleans now have their power back on.  I'm sure it's not up everywhere 100%, but as of yesterday, everyone we know has power again thank goodness. Many ended up in hotels in Houston until the power was restored. It's just too hot and humid in New Orleans to survive long without A/C.

  1. I thought this was a very interesting read, there was nothing boring about it--especially that bobcat photo! First of all, you're a pretty terrific grandmother Rian, you sure make me miss mine. Secondly, if you do wind up making that Shepherd's pie I hope you take a picture and share it here :^) And lastly, I'm sorry to say it but I think Texas right now is pretty much in medieval times. The electrical grid there is the worst, they're wrecked people's voting rights and now this deputizing of EVERY citizen to go after poor pregnant women. It's awful. (And you're right--this is your blog.)

    1. Thanks for your comment, Dug. And I will try to remember to take a picture of our Shepherd's pie. It is one of our favorites, but it's not true to the original shepherd's pie recipes as I make mine in a pie crust (we love pie crusts!). I really like Texas, but lately it's politics are unbelievable. I don't understand how Governor Abbott sleeps at night. It's getting almost as embarrassing as Trump was.

  2. Thank you for this post, Rian, and I didn't find it boring anywhere at all. It's always interesting to hear how others are coping with the current world situation. Your dinners sound really tasty and healthy. I'm still dieting and hoping to see some lower numbers on my scale soon. Still stubbornly staying the same (grrr!). :-)

    1. DJan, I too like to know what others are doing from day to day especially during this pandemic. But I don't understand how politics has taken such a big role in our lives. It's important true, but I've always believed that when things got bad, you pull together not pull apart. You pull together for the common good... whether that be within your family or within your country. Guess its obvious that everyone doesn't see it that way.
As for your scale numbers, I'm sure you will succeed. You are such a strong committed person that I can't see how you wouldn't.

    1. I agree, Olga. Napping is my favorite retirement perk! And these days it comes in handy.

  4. Certainly not a boring post - that bobcat is a little frightening! Your granddaughter is lucky to have such a sweet grandma. I'm sure she will appreciate her care package.

Thankyou for reminding me of the tiles. I'm struggling to find a gift for my son for Christmas (my daughter is far easier to buy for) and one of those tiles would be a terrific idea....though I'm not sure if he has an I-phone. I guess I'll have to ask. :)

Since I'm Canadian, I probably shouldn't offer my two cents, but I was grateful to see the U.S. Supreme Court come out against the Texas abortion law. It was all egregious but the bounty available to snitches was beyond the pale. Hopefully it is struck down quickly.

Shepherd's pie is one of our favorites too, in fact we had it for dinner earlier this week. Enjoy!

    1. Hi Mae! Yes, she did appreciate it. Got it today and texted me immediately. As for the tiles, he may not have to have an iPhone, just some updated smart phone. If you google Tile.com it can probably tell you.

  5. Nope, not bored and I am pretty easily bored:) That might be the handsomest bobcat I have ever seen. Beautiful markings. Use to love shepherd's pie. Haven't had it since I left home. Need to correct that. Thanks for the reminder.
Like you, our divided country is so upsetting. I always thought if we had a common enemy (such as Covid) we would all pull together. Guess not.

    1. We have seen many bobcats around here. Good looking ones too. But this one's markings were really exceptional.

    1. It's good to laugh, yes? My brother (now deceased) used to make me laugh so hard, I cried. I miss that. And I enjoy food talk too. You certainly could make Shepherd's pie, Debbie, it's so easy (with or without peas). As for the care package, she was thrilled! Texted me immediately to thank me. She is such a sweet child. Happy to hear that you are feeling better...

  7. My goodness...never feel the need to apologize for your thoughts on your OWN blog!!! That's insane. So, you hurt someone's feelings because of your opinion, so be it.

Speaking of phones...the new ones (both android and iPhones) are way too overpriced.

    That bobcats is a stunner!!

Shepherd's pie!! It's been years for me. Delicious. And, it's good to hear power has been restored in N O.

    1. I guess I didn't feel that I was apologizing for speaking my thoughts, Anni... just letting everyone know that I was aware of how easily offended people are these days.

And yes, the new phones are way overpriced. Only way we will update our old one would be to do the monthly payment plan... and it would probably have to be the last one we ever get.

  8. Not boring at all.
I am sure that your daughter will be overjoyed with her package.
My phone is old too (and given the price I won't be updating it anytime soon).
    LOVE that bobcat.
And, from the other side of the world, agree with you on the abortion issue.

    1. Thanks for commenting, EC. I wouldn't upgrade our phones even now except that I'm not sure the battery will hold out much longer and I'm sure the iPhone 6's aren't supported anymore. Love the bird pics on your blog!

  9. I thought that was an Ocelot, what striking markings that Bobcat has! I share your views on the Pandemic and the Texas Taliban ban on Abortions, which has nothing to do with being Pro-Life, more about controlling Women and Oppressing marginalized Communities as much as they can get away with. It's all very Naziesque that touch of turning in one's Neighbor for a Bounty, the Vanilla Isis is a bunch of scary Fanatics that have come into Power and corrupted Democracy to suit their own vile Agendas.

    1. Thanks for commenting, B. I do read and enjoy your blog, but don't always comment. And you are right that the markings on that Bobcat do look like an Ocelot. He is one of the most striking marked Bobcats I've seen.
