Tiny turtle, quilts, and strange lyrics...

tiny Box Turtle

Found this little fella in our backyard the other day. He's one of the smallest Box Turtles we've seen and we see quite a few. They come to feed on the feral cat food in both the front and back yards. Most are 2-3 times this one's size. (Of course they must be small at some point, but we've just never seen them??) We figured a lot may be eaten by the raccoons and other wild critters by the creek. I wanted to take him in and keep him safe, but DH said to let him be as he made it this far.

I have been working on my crazy scrap pandemic quilt. Just finished the 2 borders. Now I need to decide on a backing so I can put it all together and start quilting.

And then I've also finished another jungle theme quilt... made with strips of fabric. I haven't decided on the borders for this one yet.

Going to mention something bizarre here. I woke up this morning with the lyrics to a song going through my head. Don't know why, but thinking maybe my subconscious is more concerned about the DIVISION in our country than I realize.  The lyrics were:

"America, America, God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with BROTHERHOOD
from sea to shining sea."

Isn't that the strangest thing?

I wrote this yesterday, but didn't post it. Now it's Friday morning and we just got back from running an errand. Don't have anything interesting to add, so I guess I'll close for now. Hope you all have a fun-filled safe healthy weekend. Thanks so much for taking the time to read my scribbles.

BTW, I spoke with my daughter  (who has yet not taken the Covid vaccine) about my concern (a mother worries). She explained how her doctor doesn't recommend she take the vaccine due to her Hashimoto disorder. She is more fearful of the vaccine and what it might do than Covid. And I can understand that. But she is careful, wears a mask, and takes all the necessary precautions (... but still I worry).

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

  1. Hopefully blogger will allow this comment through. It ate my first attempts. I have hashimoto's disease and my doctor didn't mention any possible interactions with the vaccine to me. I have had it now. I do hope that your daughter is ok.
I LOVE your quilts. Beautiful work which is beyond me now.

    1. Thanks so much for commenting, EC. I will mention this to my daughter. Did you have any reaction at all to the vaccine (outside of the normal sore arm)?
Thank you on the quilts. I'm no seamstress, but I can do basic quilting. That pandemic scrap quilt is just putting together all my scrap fabric - so I didn't have to throw it away.

    2. No reaction. Even the sore arm was minimal. The vaccine I had (and the only one available for my age group here) was Astrazenica.

    3. Spoke to my daughter. She asked if you asked your doctor if he recommended getting the vaccine with your Hashimoto? Also she is more concerned with the Pfiser and Moderna. Since you got the Astrazenica, it doesn't involve the RNA... I think she would feel it's a bit safer... but that's just my thoughts.

    4. I have a number of chronic medical conditions and asked my doctor whether any of them precluded having the vaccine. She said not. Is Astrazenica available there? Mind you, it has some other disadvantages - not least that it may be less effective.

  2. What a cute baby turtle. I would be like you and want to protect him. Hope he makes it.
I know how you worry and so sorry your daughter's doctor won't give her the shot.

    1. You know, Patti. I worry if she doesn't get it and if she does... what can you do?

  4. Rian your quilts look great, you're very talented! I'm sorry to read about your daughter, I had to look up Hashimoto disorder to see what it was. There sure is a lot of people with thyroid issues it seems... anyway, I guess a mother's worry never ends. Hope you & your family have a good weekend Rian.

    1. Thanks, Dug. Not sure it takes talent, just some perserverance on my part.
Hashimoto was new to us until our daughter was diagnosed.

  5. I love your quilts! I think the pandemic one will be worth the memory once we are through this, if ever. I do hope your daughter can get a vaccine of some sort, if nothing else to help her mother to worry less. And I do hope that tiny turtle makes it.

    1. "once we are through this, if ever." - so true, DJan.
And I too hope that tiny turtle makes it. We haven't seen him again since that day. But we have seen some larger ones.

  6. That's an adorable little turtle. I have my fingers crossed s/he will remain safe.

I don't have any health issues that would preclude my getting any of the COVID vaccines (and I am fully vaccinated), but from everything I've heard from medical professionals via news, there's an extremely small population that would be allergic to the ingredients in any of them. I would suggest that your daughter get a second opinion, if she's comfortable doing so. Regardless of her choice, I hope she remains safe and well (you too!).

P.S. I especially love the colours of your jungle quilt. :-)

    1. I too hope the little turtle survives and grows to be an adult. I will keep my eye out for her/him.
I like the colors of the jungle quilt too... but that's because I lean towards earth colors rather than bright. The only reason the pandemic scrap quilt is bright is because it is using pieces and colors I hardly ever use (mostly pieces I used to make little pet quilts for family and friend's cats and dogs to lay on).

  7. Like Doug, I had to look up Hashimoto disorder. Hope your daughter is okay, and resolves the dilemma with the advice of her doctor. Take care!

    1. Thanks, Tom. I think that if you trust your doctor(s), then taking their advice is probably a good thing.

  8. Cute turtle! Your quilts are gorgeous - your talent is amazing.

I'm sorry your daughter and her doctor feel she should not get the vaccination. I can imagine and understand your concern and worries. They may be grown-up but I don't think we every quit worrying about our "kids". These days the worries seem to be even greater.

    1. Thanks, Mae. No, you don't ever quit worrying. Your kids are always your kids.

  9. it is so hard watching our grown children make choices if we don't totally agree!! i hope she made the right choice, as you know, once you get covid, the vaccine won't help!! having been vaccinated, getting the antibodies, it still was no walk in the park. even now, i still feel really tired and i keep getting vertigo.

your quilts are so beautiful, i like the crazy scrappy one, i think that was a great idea!!

    1. I hope she made the right choice too. I think she feels that if she got Covid, she's strong enough to get over it... but it's a risk. I risk that I can't help worrying about. So glad you are doing well and I understand about the after effects. My daughter-in-law is a nurse and she was vaccinated and still got Covid. She had a hard time getting over the extreme fatigue and now has scarring in her lungs.

  10. I just love turtles. Haven't seen one that small in a long time. I did rescue a larger one from the chicken lot a few days ago. Your quilt tops are so pretty.

    1. Thanks, Henny. We love the box turtles. There are several larger ones that come to eat fairly regularly from the cat food dishes. Sometimes I go out and give them strawberries.
