the cast of cats... quilt binding, and Happy Thanksgiving

This is BK

This is Squeaky

These are two of the feral cats that come to eat daily... and spend a lot of time in our yard. The first one BK (Barbeque Kitten)is about a year old and is getting big. We called him BK as he has always liked to jump up on the Barbeque pit on the back patio and stare in the kitchen window. And although a lot of the ferals are black, they all have distinquishing features which tell them apart. BK has white hairs on his chest.

The second picture is Squeaky... (younger and smaller than BK) and called such for his constant talking and squeaky little voice. Squeaky stays mostly in the front, and talks constantly to DH in the mornings when he's feeding. I've gotten into the habit of opening the front window in the morning to enjoy the cool air... and Squeaky sits under the window and talks to me.

The funny thing that DH and I have both noticed is that when it's cold outside and Squeaky talks to us, it looks like a fog coming out of his mouth (breath vapor). It's funny since he talks so much - he looks like a little dragon.

There are several others, but I don't have good pics of them yet. Olivia is a small young female, black and white  -  (small but fierce and a really good mother). She brings her 3 babies which are about 8-10 weeks old now - on occasion. We named her Olivia (for Oliver Twist's "more please") as she constantly wants 'more'.

Then there's One Eye (whom I posted about previously) and Big Boy - a really big black cat with a very large head. While One Eye is old, Big Boy is not. We would guess that Big Boy is a few years old and has developed those large jowls sometimes seen on male cats.

We get a few others that show up once in a while, but these are our regulars. These get along fine - no fighting and some even lay around together. If strange cats appear, they generally keep their distance or fluff up and howl at each other. But strangers never stay long if they're trouble. They move on.

😊

Binding (the cord around the edge of quilt) finally finished on both the pandemic and Hawaii quilts (blue on pandemic, black on Hawaii).

(For whatever reason, the print comes out huge once in a while and I have to go back and correct it. Does anyone know why this is?)

Since Thanksgiving is this coming Thursday and I probably won't have time to post again, I will say Happy Thanksgiving to all here!
We will be having a quiet Thanksgiving this year - no big get-together - just turkey and stuffing sandwiches!

With any luck, our family holidays will resume again in the near future, but not in 2021. With the virus spiking again in some states, we're not ready to undo all that we've gone through these last 2 years... not yet. We will hold out and hope that with vaccinations and time, things will be much better by spring. 🙏

*And I got my Echocardiogram yesterday. Results were in my Texas Health portal, but haven't spoken to the doctor yet - so not sure how to interpret them.*

Take care! Have a wonderful weekend and a Happy Thanksgiving!

Hugs (virtual),
Rian

  1. Love your quilt binding - and both cats. I am a HUGE sucker for black cats. Jazz is completely black except that as he gets older some of his whiskers have turned white.
Happy Thanksgiving - and I hope your echocardiogram results are useful.

  2. Love your gang of cats and great how they get along together. Sorry Thanksgiving will not be a big gathering but I am like you. I would hate to undo all we have gone through so far and right now, Covid is picking up again. Stay safe and enjoy your Thanksgiving as much as possible.

    1. Happy Thanksgiving Patti! Yes, I'm not too sure that Covid is through with us and I (like you) don't want to undo all we have gone through. We can hang on longer (if necessary) if it means less lives lost.

  3. Rian I hope the results of your echocardiogram turn out good, and your quilts look wonderful. But you know what I enjoyed reading here most, your feral family outdoors! I'm just glad they found your house to come to, when needed :^) I sure hope you & your family have a nice Thanksgiving.

    1. Dug, we should have started a Geneology chart 36 years ago when we first moved here and the feral cats started coming around. We did originally take some to the vet for shots and neutering and the babies to the local no-kill shelter. They had a great adoption room and knew we would bring in kittens already friendly and vaccinated. But as time went on and we got older, the catch and release got harder... so now we just do what we can by offering shelter and food.

  4. The cats are gorgeous and look health and well fed. Squeaky sounds like a real character.

The quilts are lovely, nice work. I find that blogger changes the font on me frequently and I try to remember to check before I post to fix it. I have no idea why it happens.

Hope your results provide some answers. Take care, stay well, and Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. They (the cats) are fat little buggers! DH feeds them well. I tell him he needs to cut back a little as prices are going up and we are retired and on SS. But he really loves taking care of them. They are not 'ours'... and will go off on their own at some point, but that's alright.
I haven't figured out why blogger changes the font unexpectedly but I do think it has something to do with pictures.
      Happy Thanksgiving Mae!

  5. I have lots of friends who I see have big changes in font sizes for no apparent reason. I haven't been bothered by it (yet) but I do know how to fix it, since I used to write in HTML at work. Dark ages! Love hearing about and seeing your feral cats. :-)

    1. I know how to change it... if I remember to check before posting. Just wonder why it happens. I think I got a good picture of One Eye today using my Nikon (which I hardly ever use anymore since the iPhone).

  6. The cats are beautiful and I love their names. Oh, blogger drives me crazy changing the font size in my posts. I have noticed when I remove a picture from a post it throws everything off, including print size, and I don't know how to change it. Your quilts are so pretty! Take care, and I hope your results from the monitor are good. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your husband.

    1. Thanks, Henny. Their names aren't very original, but work well with identifying them (I often wonder what they call us). And I think that blogger has some glitch that involves pictures and font size... Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  7. I feel quite sad that there are so many feral cats around your way. Is there no way to arrange for them to be spayed or neutered? I am glad that you feed them. Have any ever shown any sign that they might want to be adopted by someone?

    1. Hi Friko! It IS sad that there are so many feral cats around... and although there are plenty of catch and release programs, they're never enough. Many do get caught and spayed/neutered, but not all. Some do get adopted into people's homes (at one time we had 8 cats inside) and the young ones that disappear - we hope that they were taken in. But we live on a greenback with a creek and the paths run all over the city connecting the parks. So we see lots of ferals; raccoons, possums, coyotes, bobcats, and box turtles mostly.

  9. Dear Rian, so hope that the results of the echocardiogram are encouraging. Thank you for introducing us to your outdoor friends. What a wonder you are that you welcome each of them with not only food but understanding and . . . delight. We are having a small family gathering for Thanksgiving at one of my niece's. Still, like you, I'm concerned about COVID even though I've had the vaccine and the booster. So many books are going to be writer by authors from every aspect of life about these years.

And . . . how is your book coming? I look forward to curling up with a homebred scone and some Irish Breakfast tea and meeting your characters again! Peace and Happy Thanksgiving.

    1. I do believe you are right, Dee. People will be writing about this pandemic...
I just hope that we will see the end of it soon. I pray you have a good Thanksgiving with your family... and that we all stay healthy throughout the holidays.
My book is still on hold after my friend who helps me recently lost her husband. But she is doing well and I expect we will get back to proofing it soon. However, I doubt that it will be before Christmas. But thanks for the encouragenment (BTW, Irish breakfast tea is my favorite).

    1. Thanks, Debbie. The pandemic quilt turned out better than I imagined... and although it is much brighter colors than I like, I used double batting inside so it is a bit thicker and warmer than most. I will use it as an extra blanket when needed.
