new children's story and other trivial info...

FYI:  I just added another children's story to my blog. It's just the next story under Children's Stories at the top of my blog and the title is "The Odd Little Duck". (if you're not into Children's stories, ignore this)

Beyond that, I got a few things this weekend... my salad spinner, milk bottles, frying pan, and veg trug! (...it takes so little to make my day)

frying pan, bottles, and masks

The Veg Trug hasn't come yet... supposed to come either today or Monday. It also has to be put together, so depending on what is going on here, it might be a while. But since I most likely already missed the spring planting dates, I may not use it until the Fall or next spring.

It's been so long since I've planted anything but herbs that I'm not sure what veggies are good for which season. I've grown bell peppers before and they do well. I'd like to plant carrots, potatoes, and lettuce.

Oh, and I plan to make the Irish stew with Guinness tonight. Will let you know next post how that turns out.

This is short as my granddaughter and I have been playing Animal Crossing online (she at her house and me here) this morning. She had me go over to her island to see all the new things she's done and new critters that have moved to her island. Also she was excited as a mama dove has laid eggs in their backyard (in real life)... and this morning the eggs hatched!

So now that it's already 10:30 a.m., I need to get busy around here.

Thanks for reading. Hope you have a wonderful weekend! And don't forget to check out the new story (if you're interested) under Children's Stories!

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

  1. I guess it takes little to make my day too, I enjoyed seeing your new frying pan, salad spinner & milk bottles! (Did you get those bottles from Amazon? Boy you got 'em fast!) I also wanted to add that you should grow some tomatoes--homegrown tomatoes beat store bought everytime. PS. Rian I wanted to add that your concern about the pages tabs not being dark enough--I wouldn't try to change those as the tab for the page you're on (outside of the Home page) DOES turn bold. Hope u have a nice weekend too. :^)

    1. I did get those bottles fast, Dug. They weren't supposed to come until later, but I got a notice that they would be delivered earlier than expected (?). Fine with me. Maybe they had a lot of deliveries in my area? And I have grown tomatoes before, but the birds tend to get to them before we do. I don't mind sharing our figs with the birds as there are plenty, but the tomatoes - not so much.

  2. purple debbie here...if the vegtrug comes soon, you can still plant this season, i have not started mine. we used water bottles, removed the labels and filled the bottom with those, you will need less topsoil. my lettuce came back from last year, and i have quite a bit of that growing, soon, i will plant my seeds. carrots are so cheap to buy, and mine did not do well. i like to plant things i can use for dinner, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers. all of those did very well in my vegtrugs, i have two, last year. this year i am going to plant yellow squash too.

i need a salad spinner, but my cabinets are filled to the brim but i should make space for one.

my camera in a nikon coolpix B700. it is quite old, nikon has newer coolpix, but it still takes great pictures.

thank you for letting me know how much you enjoy my blog and keeping in touch with me.

    1. Question: You mentioned water bottles... empty plastic ones I gather?... but why remove the labels? I get that it would require less topsoil and I imagine give some room for aeration and drainage. I too want to grow only what we use... bell peppers, lettuce, spinach, mustard greens, possibly kale, and tomatoes. Can you mix herbs in with your veggies. I love parsley and basil.

    2. me again...empty plastic water bottle to take up space, i removed the labels so the ink from the labels would not stain the deck as they got wet. our deck is fairly new. and yes, it allows for aeration and better drainage. you can mix in herbs or anything you want, even a boarder of flowers. if you grow parsley, you are going to get eggs/caterpillar's, the black swallowtails love parsley!!

i am so excited for you to start your garden!!!

  3. I just had a box delivered - not as exciting as yours as it contained cat littler and cat treats. Saku will be happy.
I had to google the veg trug - it looks like a great way to garden. Enjoy!

    1. We have very little sun in the back by the creek - too many trees (if it's possible to have too many trees). So the only place I can possibly grow anything that needs sun is on the side of the house (south) by the driveway. I plan to put the veg trug there by the fence and see how that goes. And it is raised high, so hopefully won't be hard on my back.
And I'm sure that Saku loves his box delivered!

  4. I have been thinking about ordering a salad spinner! It is funny what we find exciting after 60, lol. I am thinking of all kinds of delicious salads I could make.

    1. I love salads and make them a lot. Usually I just wash my lettuce, drain it, and dry it with paper towels. But people seem to like the salad spinners, so I thought I'd give it a try... and got it on sale for $11...

    1. I get that, Joanne. Lucky for me, I used gift cards from our kids for most of it.

  6. Had to look up veg trug also and it looks like it would make gardening easy on the back. Can't wait to see it planted and growing.

    1. DJan, I realize it's been a while since the first book... and I did a slight recap at the beginning of the second to help bring everyone up to date.
