Do you iron? and a recipe...

Question:  How many of you still iron?  This morning I decided to go through some of my old summer shirts that I  generally don't wear in the winter... but although they had been washed, I had folded them up un-ironed. So I took them out and started ironing a few, thinking that I hadn't ironed anything (but quilt fabric) in ages. Some of the newer fabrics don't need ironing, but these old 100% cotton ones still do (and 100% cotton is still my 'go to' for hot Texas summers).

And to be honest, I don't really mind ironing. It's a bit relaxing as long as there's no rush involved.  What do you think? Do you enjoy it? Hate it? Or just don't do it anymore?

And I'm sorry to bring up such a mundane subject when the world seems to be having such serious problems (pandemic, war, the economy, politics, etc.) But it's my way of coping...  concentrate on the things that I have control of... in my little corner of the world.

This post will be short, but just wondered about this. Has ironing gone away with the times - like so many other things?

I will post the recipe for Garlic Chicken Fried Rice here as it is really a good easy recipe that anyone could make... and not expensive.

Garlic Chicken Fried Rice

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp olive oil

8oz  cooked chicken strips (cut up)

1/2 red bell pepper, chopped

1/2 green bell pepper, chopped

1/2 cup chopped onion

4 cloves garlic, minced

3 cups 'cooked' rice

2 Tbsp soy sauce

1 Tbsp rice vinegar

1 cup peas

Heat 1 Tbsp oil in skillet. Add peppers and onion. Cook and stir until onion is clear (5 mins.), then add garlic and chicken.  Remove to another dish for now.

Heat 1 Tbsp oil in same skillet. Add the rice, cook and stir until heated through. Stir soy sauce into rice, then add rice vinegar, and peas.

Return the chicken mixture to skillet and blend together, heat through. (here I add  one scrambled egg and some Dash 'garlic-herb' seasoning). Then serve!

Note: I make half this recipe for the 3 of us. You can make it all, but you will have leftovers.

Closing this with another pic of Mr. Chocolatte... in the chicken pen!

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

  1. Particularly in summer I MUCH prefer natural fabrics. I do iron. It is not my favourite job, but I do less of it than when we were working. One of himself's aunts said she liked it because it was quiet and clean. She had five children (most of them boys) so I suspect quiet and clean were rare jobs in the house - and she has a point.

    1. Natural fabrics like cotton are definitely cooler. It gets to triple digits here in Texas and although we don't go out in it too much anymore, it's still hot and a drain on people as well as the power supply.

  2. I may be one of the few if my friends are anything to go by but I do still iron. I usually put a movie on my iPad and iron away. I find it relaxing too.
    Love the bunny pic!

    1. Thanks, Robin. I guess there are still a few of us around that iron.

  3. I haven't ironed in a long time but I use to rather enjoy it. It is a job that give you the most sense of accomplishment for the least amount of effort. Haven't had a place to go for the past couple of years where being wrinkle free was an asset and I have enough polyester to get me past the few times I did go public. Maybe now that we are opening up a wee bit, I'll get back in the routine.

    1. Same here, Patti. Haven't gone anywhere where my clothes needed ironing in a while. Have been getting by with long sleeve t-shirts and the occasional jean jacket or sweater.

  4. That recipe sounds so good, if I make it I'll let you know Rian--thanks! And I'd rather read about ironing than the economy or the pandemic. PS I haven't done any ironing since 2017 when I bought a wrinkly pair of curtains for my bedroom... men iron too, y'know! :^)

    1. Of course men can iron too... some may even like it. Do let us know if you make the Chicken Fried Rice.

  5. Well most all of our clothes have to be ironed. I don't much like synthetics so we have lots of cotton and linen. I don't iron though, since my husband does that. He doesn't mind and does it while watching sports on TV. That suits me fine. I do the lawn mowing and taking care of the flower beds and yard so it works out pretty well all around.

  6. I don't iron, though used to do it more when necessary when I was younger. I actually donated my iron and ironing board a couple of years ago, during one of my many decluttering sessions. I do have a small travel-sized steamer, though, in a pinch. But since I work from home and am always in athletic wear (yoga pants and tee-shirts), it hasn't been necessary to use it, except for some curtains.

    1. I think there are more these days that don't iron, than do. And a steamer should do the trick in a pinch.

  7. I am one of those, if the ironing board is up, is ironing fabric for quilting. Occasionally and rarely, I iron clothing. I am not sure any of my adult children own an iron.

  8. I had an iron I rarely used, so I finally pitched it. I haven't missed it at ll, and nothing I wear or use needs it. I did enjoy it when I was a young mother, liking the feel of freshly pressed shirts. :-)

    1. It's true, we rarely need to iron these days. I keep my old iron mainly for quilting.

  9. I do still iron some things. My Mother ironed everything and I do mean everything! Daddy's boxer shorts, wash cloths, towels, sheet, pillowcases...everything was pressed and folded neatly and put away. I keep the ironing board and iron out in the sewing room which makes it easier. Rian, those two bunnies are so cute. I want another rabbit. Wish I had kept at least one of mine.

    1. These bunnies are an interesting wild/semi-wild group. They come to eat in my daughter's garden in the evening... but only 2 Miss Leo and Mr. Chocolatte seem to hang around the garden or the chicken coup. And they go under the house in the evening... hope there are baby bunnies coming.
