my 77th birthday week... late post

Lemon Icebox pie

No big plans for the double 7's... since Monday was the 4th and I didn't want to get a cake (I had just made that Lemon Icebox pie for the 4th)... and DH's birthday is next week and he's sure to want a cake! (we didn't need a pie and 2 cakes) DH is borderline diabetic and that would be a bit much.

But we did splurge and had 3 small filet mignon's with loaded baked potatoes and green beans. I don't buy much red meat ever, so this was a nice change. And even though, they were small, they were delicious.

But I did get flowers and balloons and a few gifts from the kids:

the roses in this arrangement were gorgeous

Granddaughter made the card!

We took another 3 boxes of books to Half Price Books this morning. And I'm getting ready to fill the boxes up again. DH and Grandson brought down more old furniture and stuff from upstairs that we will be either giving away or donating to the Salvation Army. I'm hoping to clear out the 2nd upstairs bedroom which has become a 'catch all' and put in a new bedroom set - so that there's a guest room again.

Mom moved in with us in 1994 and she had the entire upstairs for her things (2 bedrooms, bath, sitting area, etc. - previously our 2 sons area). When she passed in 2008 (at 94), we emptied it out and only replaced a bedroom set in one of the bedrooms - which Grandson now has. The other bedroom became a dumping ground. But that's about to change...

Temp was 106 F yesterday and supposed to be 107 today. Not planning to be outside much... except to gather more parsley for the caterpillars we're raising. They eat it up as fast as I bring it in.

I really need to get my 2nd Covid booster soon. DH will have to ask the doctor this week if he should wait because of the Bell's Palsy. I imagine he should wait a few weeks, but perhaps I'll go ahead and get mine. We have company coming to visit in August and I know it's possible to feel unwell for a day or two after the booster... so I'd like to get that over and done way before they come.

Afraid this isn't a very interesting post... just life at our house. Oh, I should mention that we haven't seen One Eye (the old one-eyed feral cat) in a while. He usually spent a lot of time sleeping (and eating) in our yard. But he was getting pretty thin and sleeping a lot - so we wonder if he has left us for good. We wouldn't be surprised as we thought he was going to die over a year ago when he turned up all beaten up and the one-eye missing. He slept in the cat bed on the front porch every day and only got up to eat. But he eventually recovered and hung around. He wouldn't let us get too close, but he would come when I called him and throw him little treats (he loved bits of chicken or salmon).

It's Saturday... have a good weekend! Enjoy, but stay out of the heat! (and maybe put water outside for the critters?)

(Didn't get to post this during my birthday week... so held it off until DH's birthday which is today!)

  1. I'm glad you told me why you said it was Saturday, since it's Friday here. Now I understand, and I can wish you a very happy belated birthday. It looks like it was a lovely day, other than that ungodly heat!

    1. I started this post almost a week ago, just didn't get a chance to get back to it. So yes, today is Friday the 15th... and I'm just posting it. DH's birthday is today and we're having pizza tonight and just bought a cheesecake to celebrate!

  2. Rian I was wondering what you've been up to. I'm glad you had a nice birthday, the food sounded great and that air fryer looks awesome! I'm sorry to read about one eye, I'm just glad that he had a home with you guys when he needed it. And finally, I love the photos of your mom! She had a wonderful smile and I love the last picture from 1952 - - I didn't know which one was you, but I recognize your mom right away from the smile! 🙂🙂

    1. Thanks, Dug. We have been busy with DH going to doctors for his Bell's Palsy as well as de-cluttering and getting rid of things that have been accumulating. We must have disposed of over a dozen boxes of books. Our bookshelves look strange. And we are shopping for a guest bedroom set... but find the supply problem also involves the furniture stores as very little have anything actually in stock... until October.
And yes, my mom had a nice smile and was always well dressed... a much more social person than myself.

    1. Thanks, Debbie. The Breville Toaster oven we have is also an air fryer (not sure our kids knew that). But you are right about things on the counter. There's not much room for anything else on mine.

    1. Linda, we haven't had filet mignon in years! If it's beef, it's usually hamburger or Shepherd's pie - so we did enjoy it.

  6. So glad 77th week was a good one. I told you before that 77 is a good year. Big time Happy Birthday to DH. So sorry about One Eye. You certainly did your part.
Love the old picture. Is that you going topless? :)

    1. Oh yeah... I was 'topless' all summers when we were spending time at the beach in Biloxi . Think this pic was taken on my 7th birthday. Us 3 topless ones were all cousins and spent a lot of our time together growing up. The older girl is also my cousin, but her dad was retired military and we didn't see her a lot before she was a teenager. The other boy is a neighbor and I have no idea what he was doing there... probably a friend of my older brother (who was taking the pic).

  7. Happy Birthday! Your birthday dinner sounds delicious. Lemon Ice Box Pie!!! I love the photo, I bet there are some great memories. I know it's hard work clearing out a room, but it sounds like you are accomplishing miracles. Stay cool and don't work too hard. We finally got our second booster without much of a reaction. But everyone is different and I had friends who were down a day or two.

    1. Mom wasn't that tall... (5'4) but her sisters were only 5'1 and 5'2...

  10. Happy belated Birthday, Rian. My son-in-law was just telling us last month how much they love their air fryer.
I would really like to get the Omicron booster whenever that comes out.

  11. I'm glad you had a good birthday and hope your husband did as well.

Do you ever bake with any sugar-alternatives? I haven't found one that matches real sugar, but recently I bought some date syrup to try. I'd seen it on a daytime cooking program and one of the hosts said it doesn't spike your blood sugar. What about coconut sugar, is that a viable option, I wonder? I've never tried it, though have been tempted. (The ND had nixed it last year, but maybe now I could use it.)

If One Eye has passed, I hope it was a peaceful, gentle crossing. ♥

My mom got her second booster a couple of weeks ago, she said she had muscle aches this time, the only reaction she's had so far to any of the vaccines. My province, Ontario, just opened up vaccination to those under 60 now, but I think I'll wait until the fall. I don't want to get one now then another in a few months. Good luck with yours, I hope you have no ill effects.

    1. No, I don't use any sugar alternatives. I'm allergic to all artificial sugars, so I use only real sugar.

I too hope that One Eye passed peacefully. We still haven't seen him.

I'm still trying to decide whether to get that 2nd Covid booster now or wait until the Fall for the new one. They say it's Ok to do both... get the booster now and the new one later, but not sure about that...

  14. Happy birthday to you both! This is really a good post. I love seeing old family pictures. You are so cute with your doll. Reminds me some of my old pictures...always beside my mom and holding a doll. :) I've worried over whether or not to get a booster shot.
