new recipes, favorite books, and playing with pottery...

Ingredients for Chicken Alfredo

This weekend I decided to try the Chicken Alfredo recipe from Marguerite's Cajun Delights at www.cajundelights.blogspot.com . She has so many wonderful Cajun recipes that are so similar to the food I grew up with in New Orleans that I love just looking at her pictures and listening to the music.  But this recipe was not something my mama made and it sounded wonderful, so I gave it a try.  Easy - yes! Delicious - yes! It was a big hit with DH and the boys.  Sorry that I didn't think to take a picture of the finished product.

a handy dandy little book to have...

And this book is one of the best purchases I ever made.  You can look up almost anything in this little gem. When you come across something in a recipe that you've never heard of.... it's here! It will tell you what it is (how to pronounce it), where it originated, and how it's used. The inner page says, "more than 6,700 A-Z entries describe foods, cooking techniques, herbs, spices, desserts, wines, and the ingredients for pleasurable dining."  Of course with the Internet, you can probably look it up online these days... but I still love this book!

playing around...

Lastly I'm posting the end result of me playing around with clay the other night while watching TV. I suddenly felt the urge to make something and was mad at myself for not bringing home my clay tools.  Having left them in my locker at the studio, all I had available was a kitchen knife and a small bit of  clay in the garage. But despite being a little rough around the edges, I still think he's kinda cute.  As for our current chess game project, I have completed the pieces, underglazed the bases, and am in the process of firing them to bisque. After that I hope to stain them lightly with blackbird stain and refire. This week I have to decide the best way to approach the 'chess board' itself.

 New baby Cochin Chicks

An image of what a grown Cochin Chicken will look like... (colors vary)

One of the chickens (or possibly rooster?) they have now...

Another chicken (possibly rooster?) that they have now...

They already have dogs, cats, horses, and turtles/tortoises...   This 'chicken thing' is new.  Hopefully it will work out well.  I like chickens!

  1. I love your dragon very much ...so much character.
I am guessing your dish is quite hot ....chilli, even a hint, tends to burn my mouth but i can imagine how yummy it was.
Those chicks are so cute ...I assume they are for laying and not eating ...I'd be useless ...just couldn't eat anything I knew.xx

  2. No, not at all... no chilli. Those peppers are red and green bell peppers, not hot at all. I don't eat hot/spicy food either... don't understand how people enjoy their mouth or throat burning. The Tobasco sauce I put in is just a dash or two. Hubby would like more, but he knows that I don't do hot.

And as for the chicks - yes, eggs only, no eating as far as I know. My daughter and grand daughter (and myself) couldn't go that route.

  5. I think it is always nice to have a reference book nearby myself.
There was a slight mix up with my haircut appointment yesterday and I had to wait for 30 minutes. No problem, I picked up one of the magazines in the waiting room. Then I noticed I was the only one without some kind of tablet reader. I felt so old fashioned.

    1. I know... I actually have a Nook, but generally take a paperback with me. Old habits die hard.

  6. I wish I could sculpt...I have a difficult time with anything three dimensional...a brain glitch :) Your daughter has a real nice chicken coop...lucky chickens. I also like chickens and baby chicks are the cutest and most adorable little things.

    1. I once was looking at a book on the different breeds of chickens (there are so many and some are just darling) in a bookstore and asked the person next to me if she liked chickens. She replied, "I like them fried?"

  7. Oh, Rian...I love that dragon...so cute!! What a talent you have. Working with your hands and sculpting must bring you so much pleasure.

What a wonderful chicken-coop! My aunt used to have one and I loved helping her feed the chickens :) Nothing like fresh eggs!!!

    That dish sounded very...yummy!!!

  8. Thanks, Jan. Sculpting if fun... totally different from *throwing*, not that throwing on the wheel isn't fun (it is), but I still have to 'work' at it. Whereas I find sculpting like sketching, if my inner eye can see it, *usually* my hands can make it... and the process of making it (regardless the outcome) brings me joy.
