pie and other inconsequential stuff...

Blueberry Custard Pie
Made DH a Blueberry Custard Pie yesterday afternoon. We had gone to walk at the Mall in the morning and stopped at the Apple Store to ask some questions about our iPhone 6. Usually we avoid this store as there's always so many people in it... but as it turned out, we didn't have to wait long and the man who helped us answered all our questions quite easily.

This cup and saucer was given to me from a friend on my 50th Birthday!

Hard to believe that this was 50 years ago next month...

Went to my annual Oncologist appointment this week also. Had my exam, blood work, and chest x-ray taken.  All is well. Guess I'm good to go for another year.

Don't remember if I mentioned it, but last month I saw my Eye Specialist and he informed me that I should start thinking about Cataract surgery. Apparently I have cataracts, but they aren't too bad. However, since I won't drive at night due to the glare from the streetlights, he felt that this 'affected my quality of life' and although there's no need to rush into it, I should start thinking about it. Since I also have narrow angles (which can lead to narrow angle glaucoma), cataract surgery would also take away this glaucoma threat. So-oo I am thinking about it.

Tux and me *thinking about it*

Rose isn't interested. Her "leave me out of it... face"

Are any of you familiar with the Cashmire plant?

It's a bit invasive, but makes pretty colorful flowers. We took some cuttings home from DH's brother's house in Louisiana years ago. Now we are continuously cutting this plant down, but it comes back in droves.

Night blooming cereus
Now this is my all time favorite plant. It blooms at night and gives off the most wonderful aroma... even the cats will go lay by it when it gives off this fragrance. It's petals are soft like dove's feathers and the blossom only lives for a few hours... then closes and dies.

  1. Oh cataracts. I guess most everyone gets them if they live long enough. I have one too and the Dr. said that I should just wait till it was really making things difficult and then have it taken care of. The last several years I have been able to ratchet up my vision by upping the prescription in my glasses for that eye but he said that I'd gotten to the point where that would no longer help. So i'm toddling along now and thinking about it too. It's so hard to decide when to take that step when it's really optional----when is it bad enough????? I guess you know when you get there?

I have a friend who had cataract surgery and he said it was really amazing how much better his vision was afterwards. They come on so gradually that you really don't realize how bad your vision is until you get it fixed.

    1. I know, Vic. Everyone says it's not a big deal, but still it's worrisome... after all, it's your *eyes*. But I (like you) will put it off for a while until I feel it's necessary... and hope I will know when the time is right.

  2. I have cataracts too, but since they can fix my eyesight almost to 20/20 with glasses, I have to make a CASE for them to give me the surgery. I actually would love to have it. That blueberry pie looks delicious. :-)

    1. My friend says the same thing. She says that she would gladly take my surgery. Her cataracts are not bad enough for surgery, but she hates wearing contact lens.
And the pie was/is very good...

  3. Another cataract input here: I was afraid to drive at night, but still have grandkids to ferry about. My cataracts weren't "bad" enough until they did a night vision test. To quote the doctor, night vision dropped off like a stone. Got them done and now will drive through blinding rain on the darkest night just like a twenty year old. And I did it recently. Well, that's my story. Yummy pie!

    1. Thanks, Joanne. That's good to know. They did do some kind of test that I'd never had before and said that my night vision had suffered. I don't have to drive at night (not like you and your grandchildren) so I've not been in a hurry to get the surgery, but I know I will eventually.

  4. Here in NZ you have to wait until you have enough points to have cataracts done, which basically means you are just about blind, if you are in the public health system. Otherwise you pay a small fortune to have them done privately.
I like the look of your blueberry custard pie.

    1. We love custard pie here, so if I have any fresh berries or peaches etc., I tend to make a combination custard pie. Actually I do the same for pumpkin, just add a little fresh cooked pumpkin to the custard.

  5. Just about everyone I know who is in their 70s (plus or minus) has had cataract surgery done, no problems. Mom's had both eyes done and then a few years later (recently) had something else done....just a quick laser thing. I'd be freaked out about it too, but I think technology has advanced so much that it really isn't a big deal anymore.

That pie...I'd have eaten the entire middle by now (i.e. the blueberry custard, not the crust -- lol). Mmm, time for something to eat!

But the cup and saucer...surely not given to you 50 years ago next month, on your 50th. That would make you 100! Not that you still couldn't be healthy active at 100, of course!

    1. I know, Kim. It's not a difficult surgery and I already had laser holes punched in my eyes years ago to prevent the narrow angle glaucoma. It just stung a little. So I'm sure that I will get the cataract surgery eventually.
And yes, that was a typing glitch... it was 20 years ago that I got that cup for my 50th birthday, not 50 years ago. Thanks for picking that up. I'm freaking enough at becoming 70, I can't imagine being 100...

  6. I got your recipe for the casserole, thanks so much, now I need the recipe for your blueberry custard pie it is making me hungry for a piece for breakfast. my eyesight is such that contacts don't work but so far I don't need glasses, been a while since I went to the eye doctor so who knows. I don't like driving at night any longer. too dangerous on these mountain roads. We go places during the day now.

    1. I'll send you the recipe for the custard pie. It's simple and we've been making it for years. And you just add any fresh fruit you like by putting it in the crust and sprinkling some cinnamon sugar over it before pouring in the custard on top. The fruit will rise to the top while baking. We like it because it's not too sweet... and it is good for breakfast too!
And I think you're smart not to drive in the mountains at night.

  7. I am also actually wanting to have the cataract surgery, but they aren't bad enough yet.
I love the night blooming cereus. Night bloomers must have to use scent to attract pollinators, I am guessing, because they all seem to have wonderful fragrances.

    1. I don't know why they have that wonderful scent, Olga... but I wish you could bottle it. It's amazing! I know that when the flower opens and the fragrance is released, even my cats gather round the plant.
