a peek into my cats' secret lives...

"Caught!"

Ever walk into a room and be surprised by what you find? If you have cats (or any critters) you are occasionally taken back. In my case, I usually run for the camera. My computer room is generally off limits to the cats unless I'm in there. Why? Because to my shame, it's usually a mess and I don't want the cats digging through my clutter. If I'm in there, I can always say, "stop that"... or "leave that alone", etc.  However, the doorknob on this room has become faulty. It doesn't always catch... so an industrious cat can just give it a little push and find himself a new hidey hole.  This is what I found earlier this morning.

"I'm sorry... it was just too comfy to pass up."

Later today when I was passing the room and found the door ajar again, THIS is what I found...

3 startled cats! (Can you find them?)

There's Tux!

And as you know, Ghost has many faces... mostly grumpy, but this one is a little different... maybe 'guilty'?

"uh... hi mom!"

Julie is on the pillow and really doesn't care if she's caught doing something she shouldn't. So... only Rose was missing, but I found her in the hall...

"What....?"

At 21 (almost 22), Rose usually isn't part of too much mischief. She knows where her food is, where the litter box is... and how to find her 2 favorite spots; by the Aga or in a sunspot on our bed.  She has a routine she follows every morning... between 6 and 7 am she starts howling... letting us know from the spot she sleeps on our bed that  it's time to start thinking about getting up. Between 7 and 8 (if we're still not up), she will run over to the Plantation blinds (on both sides of our bed) and start rattling them. This usually gets us up. Once we open the door and let her out of the room, she starts her 'walk about'. She walks around and around the house in a large circle and continues this until I make coffee and give her a tiny drop of Redi-whip (which she adores). Then she will sit in the kitchen and wait for DH to start feeding for the day.

Oh well, I'd rather wake up to a cat howling than an alarm clock any day...

On a totally different note, I want to ask if any of you always answer the front door when a stranger knocks on it?  We have a camera on our door, so we can see that we don't know the person. We also have a sign that states 'no soliciting' (more or less). Actually what it says is:

The police recommend you answer the door, so that they (whoever they are) know someone is home, but since there is no screen or anything between you and them, I'm hesitant to do so. Someone was knocking rather loudly on our door this afternoon. We could see that it was a man we didn't know and he had another man in a car out on the street. We didn't answer although both our cars were in the driveway... so I'm guessing it was obvious someone was home. Not sure what the best thing to do is in these cases, but opening the door didn't seem like a good idea. What do you think?

  1. Clever kitties. But then, aren't they always. I would not have answered that door.

    1. the kitties are clever... and they make us laugh.
As for the door, I have to go with my gut... which said 'don't open'

  2. Love your cats. I'm a cat person. Your question about answering the door is one I also struggle with. It feels very unsafe to me but I haven't found a way to avoid it. Soliciting, I have not one ounce of patience with, either in person or on the phone. It was rude of them to invade my privacy.

    1. I feel the same, Linda. I have no qualms with family, friends, or neighbors come by... but I don't like strangers knocking on my door... and feel that I have the right not to answer.

  3. I think your question about answering the door is pertinent for all of us. If I don't know who is there I do not open the door, but DO let them know someone is home. After finding myself alone with 2 intruders in my hoe a few years ago I have become even more cautious and now have a wonderful German Shepherd dog keeping company with me. DON"T open your door for anyone you don't know !

Love your cats, don't you wish your cats could give you their assessment of the people at your door ?

    1. I had to LOL at your last question. Yes, my cats do let us know someone is around.... they take off and hide if someone knocks or rings the bell... and it does alert us (in case we didn't hear the bell).

  4. no I wouldn't open the door, I'd ask who is it through the door and if I wasn't satisfied I wouldn't open the door. Probably a salesperson.

    1. Usually is a someone soliciting... but you'd think they could read our sign.

  5. Love the fur crew pics, especially the first. :-)

As for answering the door: My situation is a bit different, as it's a densely-packed townhouse condo complex and there's really no privacy. In the early years there I would answer the door, but now I don't even bother if I don't recognize the person through the peep hole. Living on my own as I am, I don't want to be faced with salespeople or scammers. Mind you, I have a screen door that I keep locked when I'm home too, so someone can't even open that to get to the main door. It should be obvious (?) that someone is home, since the screen is locked from the inside!

    1. Our front door is double... although we only open one side. I have thought of putting in a screen for protection, but not sure about a double screen?

  6. I would not have answered the door if I were alone. I wonder what that was all about... Love the kitties and your daily routine with them. :-)

    1. I'm sure it was soliciting... but it kind of made me angry when we didn't answer the bell, and he started knocking very loudly as if he were angry that we weren't coming to the door.

  7. Cats are great at both escaping and getting in where they're not wanted. Living at the edge of a small village in a sparsely-populated area, we don't get many people knocking on our door for any reason and very few we don't know. I always answer the door and if it's a salesperson, I politely say I'm not interested and close it again.

    1. I've always thought of little English country villages as peaceful... but watching the English mysteries on TV makes me wonder... (ha!) But I do think that you probably do know more people in your area than we do in the city. Home invasions are not uncommon and I guess now that we're elderly, I'm a little more cautious.

  8. Cats make life interesting, that's for sure!

I wouldn't answer the door either. At the most I might have gone to the door and called through it with my phone in my hand in case I need to call the police. My front window opens out to the front walk, I keep the blinds open for the cats, and my chair is situated where I can see anyone coming up. I've been known to not answer the door even though the person could clearly see me. That's when I pick up the phone as if it has just rung and head to another room.
That sign is pretty clear...you'd think people wouldn't assume that it isn't meant for them.

    1. Eileen, we have a window that also opens to the front walk, so I guess we could talk to them through there... but I generally don't want to. So, although there is a camera out there, I do sometimes look out the window, but seldom answer. I figure that with both cars out front and the lights on, it should be obvious that someone is home.
