Sunday after Harvey...

Just a thank you for all your comments on my previous post concerning Hurricane Harvey. Yes, our families in the hill country and south of Houston faired well. Daughter had some flooding at their place, but nothing that they couldn't handle. She said that the animals (horses, chickens, dogs, cats) were freaked, but they all survived it. Haven't talked to BIL in Pearland (South of Houston) this morning yet... but yesterday, they were fine too.

Seems like some areas were hit hard, others barely hit. The pictures look awful along the coast, but these were probably the hardest hit. They will definitely need help and prayers to get through the next few weeks or months.

My daughter told me a strange story this morning. She said that they were preparing for the hurricane Friday evening (getting the dogs inside, making sure the chickens and horses were Ok, etc.) and she was on the phone when their cat 'Cocoa' (who is brother to our cats, Tux and Julie) suddenly started howling loudly in the doorway. Then he ran at her, grabbed her leg, and bit her. She dropped the phone and pushed him away. (He is usually a very sweet calm cat - same age as our cats - 14) He ran off and then came back and did the same thing. It was like he was freaked by something. Later he was fine... acting perfectly normal. I told her that animals sometimes sense things... and apparently the incoming storm was responsible? I don't know. Possibly the eclipse and the storm affected him???

(Cocoa is the white 'siamese looking' kitten in the pictures on the right sideline of this blog. My grand daughter is holding him... but this is an old pic -14 years ago)

Anyway, to get off that subject and onto another: I made a new recipe for buttermilk biscuits this morning. DH has been after me to try it. He loves biscuits. So I did... and it was a keeper. I'm posting a picture of the magazine it came from, the biscuit pic in the magazine, and the recipe for any who might want to try it. I don't think it's an unusual biscuit recipe, but I don't make biscuits often, so am happy to find one we like.

I will say that I halved this recipe since I was only cooking for DH and myself. It still made about 7 medium sized biscuits.

And the Fall semester pottery classes resumed this week. It was good to be back. After a whole summer of not working with clay, I wondered if my muscle memory would work when I got back on the pottery wheel. Luckily it did. Now next week is Labor Day weekend and the campus will be closed... so I hope to get a few days in the studio later on this week to finish what I started yesterday.

Have a good week... stay safe, and please keep those who were affected by Hurricane Harvey in your thoughts and prayers.

  1. I'm glad to hear your family is safe. That is very odd about the cat. I remember our dog acted very strange when a tornado went through our area when I was a girl. I've only made biscuits once or twice and probably used Bisquik (do you have that?). My mom called them tea biscuits. -Jenn

    1. Jenn, we do use Bisquick... but mostly for pancakes. The Bisquick biscuits are good, but buttermilk biscuits made from scratch are 'lighter'...

  2. i've been off the pc all weekend as had family up & didn't know about the hurricane, glad all is well for you & sending prayers that everyone affected will be okay
people really should take note of animals freaking like that, he probably wanted her to get off & away from the phone too as i have heard lightning can through phone lines. he got the desired result when she dropped the phone.
    thanx for sharing

  3. OMC, I'm so glad you checked in and gave us an update. I was glued to the coverage yesterday, concerned for your extended family and you and your husband and critters too. Fingers crossed they all continued to be okay.

Very weird re: Cocoa, but I hope he's okay now and that he didn't break the skin--or not badly. Cat bites can be worse than dog bites.

Anyway, everyone be safe and be well...prayers and purrs to the millions affected by Harvey.

    1. I don't think he broke the skin... just wanted to get her attention from what I understand.

  4. I too am glad to hear your family is safe. There is still plenty of rain to fall from this storm, but hopefully we are through the worst of it. What a huge storm! The rainfall totals are astounding. I have been watching and praying that people will survive it.

    1. Yes, it's still hanging over the area... and moving very slowly to the east. Spoke to family in Baton Rouge and they are experiencing rain from the outer bands. Hope it moves north soon before getting too close to New Orleans.

  5. I'm happy to know that you and yours came through only slightly damaged. My cat gave one long scream before the eclipse, then disappeared somewhere in the house.

    1. I find it fascinating as to how sensitive animals (and especially cats) are to things. That's one of the reasons they are so 'comforting' when people are upset.

  6. I grew up on buttermilk biscuits! They are the best. I have Mom's recipe, but it is rather vague...a pinch of this, a bit of that, etc., so I look forward to giving yours a try.

Yay! Back to pottery class! I am looking forward to seeing what you and the wheel come up with this semester! :~)

    1. We love buttermilk biscuits! Don't think they could be better than your mom's, but may be close.
As for the pottery class, I'm looking forward to see what we come up with also!

  8. So glad you and your family are safe. That storm is just awful. It worries me every time we turn on the news and see all that water and people having to be rescued. It is so sad. That is strange about the cat biting. I've always heard that animals can tell when something bad is about to happen. Cocoa looks very sweet and calm.

    1. The more I think about what Cocoa did, the more I think he was just scared and trying to get my daughter's attention. It was so out of character for him.

  9. The recipe sounds good. I usually make biscuits using sweet milk since I rarely have buttermilk in the house. And too I make my biscuits very thin, with an almost crispy bottom like my mother did but I love those big thick biscuits like the ones you get at Cracker Barrel so I copied this recipe and will try it soon.

  10. I made those biscuits tonight for dinner. Exceptionally good! Makes me feel guilty eating them though knowing that a whole stick of butter is incorporated in them! Maybe use that recipe just every so often, but not every time.

    1. Glad you liked them, Vic. I half the recipe, so only 1/2 stick of butter, but still I understand. We don't make biscuits very often, but when we do, I will use this recipe. BTW, you mentioned 'sweet milk'... ??

    2. Oh, that's just plain regular milk as opposed to buttermilk. I figured you would know the meaning since I think of that as a southern expression. Here in Indiana they don't know what is meant by it either. Same with english peas as opposed to green peas. Regional dialects are so interesting.

    3. I suspected it was regular whole milk, but have never heard it called sweet milk. Do know what sweet tea is though.
