Happy Cinco de Mayo Saturday!

I'm writing this Sunday. Yesterday was Cinco de Mayo. We celebrated by taking the cats to get their annual vaccinations. They weren't happy. In fact they knew 'something' was going on from the early morning when we took their crates into the house.

Julie was upset and kept crying and following me around all morning, Tux was jumpy, and Ghost stayed away and hid in the bedroom. When the time came to crate them, we have to use diversion... finding the one that will be the most difficult to find if they take to hiding (that's Ghost), crating her, then the next one must be taken without the 3rd one seeing or hearing them protest (that's Julie). We usually leave Tux for last as he is a large cat and doesn't move fast or hide well. However, he did hear Julie complaining as she was put into her crate... and was on 'high alert' when captured.

But they behaved well and were home again very quickly... and given treats to make up for having to put up with the indignities. Ghost was the last to let bygones be bygones. But as of this morning, she has forgiven us (a little chicken from my making chicken salad today helped).

My son (who lives on Oahu) is keeping us updated on the earthquakes, lava spills, and volcanic activity on the big island of Hawaii. Scary stuff!  Oahu is not affected... or at least not seriously. I think they said that the 6.9 earthquake Friday could be felt as far as Oahu... and if the winds are right, they may get some ash. I can't imagine dealing with volcanoes and earthquakes. I have dealt with hurricanes,  and the possibility of floods and tornadoes... but one cannot hide in a closet from an earthquake/lava.

I have a friend in my pottery class that is/was planning to move to the big island.  She once told me that the area she planned to move to was far away from touristy attractions and was beautiful. However, there was the 'possibility of lava flows'...

Keep these people in your prayers.

  1. You have my highest regard for getting three cats to the vet in one go! I took the boys together once...never again. LOL.

I can't imagine living anywhere prone to volcanic eruption, or tornadoes and hurricanes for that matter. All the years I lived on the east coast, I don't recall any hurricane damage, though it wasn't long after I'd moved here that Halifax dealt with Hurricane Juan. Perhaps it's what you get used to, as we deal with ice storms in winter, and there was widespread flooding in the entire region last year...Mother Nature runs the show, that's for sure.

    1. I do think it's what you are used to, Kim. When you grow up with a thing, you seem to have a respect for it... but possibly not a fear of it.

  2. WE once looked at a condo on the big island but I could see an ancient lava flow from the balcony and realized it was not my idea of a fun place to live. It is a very bad eruption and I hope people get back on their feet soon enough.

    1. I keep hoping the worst is over, but then we hear about another eruption.

  3. the volcano is a young one and has been constantly erupting since the 80s, I would not want to live anywhere near it; I can't imagine living in a home where lava is constantly flowing underneath it only waiting for it to surface

  4. My cat, singular, is so anti confinement he destroyed his lovely hundred odd dollar traveling cage, and now is crammed in one half its size, on wheels. No sympathy. Well, for my cat, at least.

    1. We have several cat carriers, Joanne. But only one that opens from the top (like a suitcase). It is the easiest to use as the others you have to either take the thing apart or try to drag the cat out from the front. We use the easy one for Ghost... as she never has to leave the carrier (just open the top, give her her vacs, close her up). She doesn't like to be handled. Good luck with Singular.

  5. I can't imagine crating three cats. We had one that was able to disappear at the mere mention of "crate," "car," or "vet." I sweat it had the super power to make it self invisible.

    1. They can certainly 'disappear' when they want to... maybe it is a super power.

  6. Glad to hear that the cats made it through their annual wellness visit. And that you did, too. I do hope that the volcano on the Big Island will settle down now. What a scary time!

    1. Cats made it through fine... not their favorite adventure, but fine. I tell them what I tell myself a lot "Don't think about it. It has to be done, just do it."

  7. I love how you write about the cats. Cats are smart and know exactly when something is going on. Our Dumperoo (awful name, I know) is the most afraid, of everything! Just when he relaxes and begins to really trust us, something scary will happen. Some loud noise, or visitors in the house. The volcano is so scary. I've sure thought those folks. Glad your son far enough away to be safe.

    1. Cats (as true of all animals) do have different dispositions. Some are more fearful than others. And it isn't always their background as some of ours we raised from very young kittens. So I expect it's simply personality or genetics.

  8. Herding cats has to be a challenge. I am glad your son is OK. I so feel for those in the path. There is no way to prepare for volcanoes or fires. They just destroy. They are in my prayers.

    1. DH and I laugh when we hear the expression "herding cats" as it is certainly a challenge... but doable.

  9. We are happy to hear everything is ok with your son. The little ones seem like they forgave you after you came home. Some treats will always make them feel better again. Have a great day.

    1. Yes, they definitely forgive... if not forget. Next time those crates come out, they will remember. Thanks for visiting.

    2. Thank you for the reply. Hopefully, the next time the crates come out it will be easier for you and them. It's a long shot but it could happen. Have a great weekend.

  10. Glad your son isn't in the path of the volcano, but earthquakes are definitely not good news either.

Funny how cats can sense when there is a possibility of a visit to the vet. I can just imagine Ghost being ticked off - she's appropriately named, isn't she?

    Have a good week!

    1. Ghost is appropriately named. As a grey kitten, she would be practically unseen on the dark and light grey slate of our floors.

  11. Dear Rian, thank you for the reminder to keep those affected by the lava flow and noxious gases in our prayers. I forgot to do that this morning.

As to the cats, I so enjoy your sense of humor when describing their response to leaving the house to go to a vet. I live with three cats also and must do just as you do with the order of "crating" them. And they do feel indignant about it all and yes one of them takes a while to forgive me. Cats do know how to express their displeasure and to whip us into shape! I laughed as I read your words. Thanks so much for that. It's always good to start the day with laughter. Peace.

    1. Dee, if you live with 3 cats, then you surely know the ins and outs of living with them. But they give so much... and ask so little (just love... and food... and treats!) And maybe they also like to see how well trained they have us. Ghost loves to sit on the ottorman and stare at DH until he gives up his chair to her and goes to sit on the sofa. She may climb into his chair and sleep or she may just sit there 5 mins and then go off - like, "Ha! knew I could do it!"
