Halloween cat/bat?

Halloween cat/bat?

Neighbor's Halloween decoration (The Flying Frenchman)

I had to send you a pic of our neighbor's Halloween lawn decoration this year. If you enlarge it, you can see all the skeletons manning the deck. He calls it "The Flying Frenchman"  (he is French and just moved here a few years ago). He always goes all out for the holidays and the neighborhood loves it.

We actually had a busy night of 'trick or treat' -ers. Didn't expect it as it was cold (30 F) and had been raining earlier in the day. But by evening, it was probably in the 40-50 F's and the rain had stopped. So despite it being cold, we had a fair number of door bell ringers.... (maybe about 30+ ?)

*******************

Unless things change next week, it seems like the weather here in North Texas skipped Fall this year. We went from the 90's to the 30's already. Fireplaces on - the cats and I are ready to hibernate until spring.

Tux and I under a blanket on the sofa.

And taken just this morning, the 3 cats waiting by the Aga for a treat... (I must have taken 6 shots and in each one of the cats would turn his head - this one is the best of the lot. Julie was not looking up, but at least she didn't turn away).

The outside ferals already have their new beds out and heat lamps on. And they are definitely using them. One of the feral cats is a handsome black with only one eye. He tends to use the catbed on the front porch a lot. We call him "One eyed Jack" - 'the cat who lived' - as he was in very poor shape a few months back... beat up badly and right eye/side of face all red and swollen. DH and I knew we couldn't get near him to take him anywhere for treatment, so we watched him and waited - expecting any morning to find him dead in the cat bed.

But... he would get up and eat, then sleep the days away in that bed. One day he was gone - and we wondered if he had gone off to die. But tho and behold, he showed up a few weeks later, healed and looking fit. He is definitely blind in that eye, but seems to do well otherwise. Still comes back on cold nights to sleep in that bed. For us he'll always be 'the cat that lived'.

Hope you had a fun Halloween and as always thanks for coming by to visit. Enjoy all that left-over Halloween candy!

Hugs,
Rian

  1. I didn't expect too many trick-or-treaters, and as usual nobody came. Fortunately for me, I figured I'd buy Kind Bars that I can eat on my own without too much guilt. I was so tempted to get my favorite, peanut butter cups, but then I would have been very unhappy about my inability to resist them. :-)

    1. DJan, you were very smart in your Halloween buying. DH buys bags and bags of candy (mostly snickers, kit kats, and Reese's peanut butter cups). Most go out the door on Halloween - but some stay around and are eaten by us. I did take a bag of Reese's to the pottery studio to share.

  2. Wow, that is quite the lawn decoration. As I read the prelude I was expecting something much smaller. What fun for the kids! I had about the same number here, though it was freezing and later began to sleet.

The photo of the three cats is cute. I'm glad to hear one-eyed Jack survived his injuries.

    1. Hi Mae! We're pretty sure that the Halloween ship will become a Christmas ship - possibly with Santa and elves. Our neighbor is pretty creative.

  3. I'd have slippers on, too. Actually, I do.

    1. I don't do well with slippers, Joanne. They make me trip. I do much better in the house with bare feet... (but perhaps I'm a little strange).

  4. Your neighbor's Halloween decorations are really neat. Folks go to a lot of trouble, for others to enjoy. I didn't do any Halloween decorating this time, but we never have any trick or treaters anyhow, living back in the woods like we do. I love seeing your cats and hearing about the ferals. It's so pitiful to see one hurt and not be able to help it. He sure came to the right place to heal though. You are so good to them. That cat/bat looks a little scary.

    1. We don't do a lot, Henny... put out a few Halloween signs on the door and a pumpkin out front. But of course we do get trick or treat-ers, so we always have candy.
As for the ferals, it is hard to see them with a problem and know that you can't help. We did have to call out the Animal Control once when one was apparently hit by a car and was dragging his hind end. He couldn't live like that... so we made the decision to call for help.

  5. I want a cat bat. Adorable and would keep me laughing. So glad one eyed Jack has a warm bed at night. I know you worried about him till he healed. My veterinary once told me you could cut a cat in three pieces, put it in a room over night and a full formed cat would come out in the AM. They are amazing at healing.

    1. Patti, I don't know about the 'cutting in 3 pieces' part, but I do know that I could form several cats from the hair I vacuum up around here.

  6. Something strange is happening on this blog site. I answered many of these comments earlier and for whatever reason the 'comments awaiting moderation' repeated all the comments 'already published' and my answers so that when I tried to delete, it would delete everything from the already published site? Anyone else having a prob?

    1. Cute, John. Some people really 'get with it' for Halloween. My DIL loves Halloween. I've never been a big fan... but I guess it's fun for the kids.
