2020 just keeps getting better, doesn't it? Besides the continuing saga of the Pandemic, losing Ghost this week, the awful fires in California & Oregon, my cousin told me this morning about Tropical Storm Mary that may be developing into a hurricane and heading toward New Orleans. My good friend here in Texas just texted me that she has a detached retina and just had emergency surgery, and I've been 'weird' for the last 3 nights...
I'll ask any of you if you are familiar with these symptoms. I have always suspected that I have sleep apnea - but ignored it. Over the years I have woken up with my heart pounding, headache, and bp high. But after I got up, walked around a bit, and had a cup of tea, it would all go away. (Normally my bp is low - about 120/70... sometimes as low as 105/59.)
But during these episodes my bp goes up to 170-199/100. It happens either late at night or early in the am, lasts for hours, and returns to normal sometime late morning. This has happened 3 nights now. Last night DH stayed up with me while I sat up on the sofa... heart pounding.
My SIL is a nurse and she says it sounds more like nocturnal hypertension...??? Since I didn't go to sleep and the bp still rose, I'm thinking - maybe not sleep apnea? I've been told to go to the emergency room, but I'm trying to hold out to see my doctor Monday and have him or his nurse practitioner listen to my heart and bp... and possibly tell me what's going on.
This world is turning into a strange place...
Sorry this wasn't an uplifting post. I'll try to do better next time.
Hugs,
Rian
Whatever it is, I am truly hopeful they will figure it out. My hubby had a stroke on August 9, and right now he is wearing a heart monitor for two weeks to ascertain whether or not he might have atrial fibrillation, which can cause the heart to stop beating properly and allow blood clots to form. He has had no symptoms, but they are looking for possible causes. I am sure the doctors will try to figure out what's going on with you in the same fashion, ruling out some things and focusing on others. I truly hope you will find out soon and put your mind (and mine) at rest. Sending you much virtual love.
ReplyDeleteThanks, DJan. It's been a miserable weekend trying to get to Monday to see the doctor. My heart and bp seem to be erratic. This is new to me and feels awful. So glad your hubby is doing well. I could use a prayer or two as I can admit I'm a bit scared.
DeleteCorrection: Tropical Storm Sally - not Mary.
ReplyDeleteDear Rian: PLEASE GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM NOW. DO NOT WAIT FOR MONDAY. If you show up to a doctor's office with an acute heart problem, they will most likely tell you to go to the ER. The hospital has every service needed to diagnose and treat a heart condition STAT! Your doctor's office is limited. You may need more than just listening to heart & BP check, like lab tests, EKG etc. Please don't wait. ♡♡♡♡
ReplyDeleteI'm sending positive thoughts that your doctor is able to determine what is going on quickly and it can be resolved. I've no idea what it might be, but it sure sounds disconcerting and downright frightening.
ReplyDeleteTake care and stay well!
I don't have any medical suggestions, but I'm keeping you in my thoughts and hoping it's quickly sorted out. 🤞🙏
ReplyDeleteOh poor thing, that has to be frightening. Please get it checked out ... saying a prayer for you.
ReplyDeleteGoodness, that does sound worrisome to say the least. Hope you get in to see someone soon and get the lowdown on what is causing this. Take care.
ReplyDeleteFor DJan and maybe for you, too. I learned a couple of years ago that MSG can cause AFIB and irregular heartbeats. I was in the hospital twice with AFIB and pounding heart. Looking back I remembered eating chicken broth made with bouillon cubes and, after researching it online, discovered that it is a trigger for AFIB. Last year my neighbor almost had a heart attack. He had recently started eating instant soup mixes for lunch everyday. I have not had any more problems with AFIB or irregular heartbeat and my cardiologist told me at my last checkup that my heart is normal. If you look up foods with MSG, you will be surprised. There are many, many foods with this in them. Ann M
ReplyDeleteHaving such a serious health warning during all this other stuff just seems unfair. I am glad we have good health technology in this country and you will find a solution. Stay safe and try to keep upbeat. Let us know when you know.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds more like a heart symptom than apnea to my non-medically trained mind. I do understand that apnea can lead to other complications though. Best to get a thorough evaluation of what is going on here. I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
ReplyDeletePlease do get this checked and soon. A monitor like Djan's husband is wearing may be necessary. I had to wear one with similar symptoms and I ended up with a pacemaker which has really helped. Please let us know how this turns out. Just said a prayer for you.
ReplyDeleteHere it is Monday. Hope you're doing well, and got to see your doctor. I've never had those symptoms but have had my heart feel funny during the night. It wakes me up and scares me. I'm so sorry about your losing Ghost. So very sorry. Things do keep getting stranger. It will ge good to start a new year and hopefully, a better year. Will be thinking of you.
ReplyDeleteAnswering these comments on Tuesday... after doctor visit. See Tuesday's post for update on visit. And it does seem more like a heart symptom to me also as my bp is somewhat erratic and heart pounds. My EKG has always been a bit strange and was this time also... but nothing new. Waiting on other tests. Still feeling light headed and weak in the legs -
