Here it is Saturday again... the weekends seem to come around so fast these days... not like when we were working... then they couldn't come around fast enough. But that's OK, I still enjoy the weekends (not sure why since after retirement, they aren't really any different from the weekdays ).
But I try to do things a little different on the weekends, do you? Maybe bake or cook something special or plan a special outing or get-together with family, etc. My daughter always asks when she calls if we have any plans for the weekend. Usually we don't... we're not even half as social as she is. They are always working on some project on their acreage as well as going out with friends or having people over. But to be honest, we are pretty content being home-bodies. Not that we don't enjoy occasional lunches or outings with friends and/or family, but it's just not our norm.
This weekend I'm hoping to get more of the clutter out of my computer room. I went through boxes of old recipes (ones cut from magazines and newspapers or handwritten by family or friends) recently and now have condensed these down to about 1/4. These I plan to put into a binder marked "someday??" And Debbie gave me an idea as to what I can do with all the cards that I want to keep. I plan on trying that.
Also this week is my oldest son's birthday. He loves rum cakes and I planned to send him one before our Aga went out again. Now I'm down to cooking with the hot plate, toaster oven, and microwave. So until the part comes in, I plan to send him a tin of whiskey balls (another favorite) and Halloween ghost cookies. The whiskey balls don't need to be baked and the ghost cookies should do OK in the toaster oven (I hope).
Oh, we visited a new grocery store (HEB) that opened up in Frisco (about 25 mins away). It's a gorgeous store... so huge and stocked! Only problem is that it was extremely crowded! (We were probably the only ones in the store with masks on - but we didn't care) But I don't like crowds, so we didn't stay long. I did find my lactose-free evaporated milk that I use in my tea! This has been hard to find anywhere else. Walmart says they have it, but it's never on the shelf.
Hi Rian--you actually touched on something I was planning to blog about sometime, "Weekends in Retirement". Someone I used to work with asked me if I still reserved things like movies & dessert for the weekend now that I'm retired, I said I sure do. Why is that? I just like to keep weekends special, sounds like you do too. Anyway, my heart sank when I read about Aga, I sure hope she's her old self soon. And your lemon curd cookies look delicious! I can't stop smacking my lips now. :^)
ReplyDeleteI find finding ideas for posts from other people's comments happens a lot. Sometimes you just need to expand upon something that was mentioned somewhere. As for the Aga, they're suppose to have the part and put it in this week. I sure hope so, miss my kitchen being warm. The boys say the lemon curd cookies are really good. I can't taste them as I used regular AP flour (which is not gluten-free).
DeleteThose cookies look really good. I'd love to have some myself, but as far as actually going so far as BAKING them, that won't be happening any time soon. And I love your posts about your daily life, Rian. That is a sweet black cat, too.
ReplyDeleteThe cookies are good - or so the boys say. I can't eat them myself. But the recipe made a lot so I plan to share them with our neighbors who have twin 7 year olds. They usually appreciate the cookies I make for Halloween and Christmas... so I think they'll like these.
DeleteI hear you. Since we retired weekends don't matter as much - though we try NOT to do things on weekends. We don't like crowds either.
ReplyDeleteI have hundreds of recipes I have cut out/acquired that I need to go through. Soon. Ish.
And I have a huge weakness for black cats.
It is Monday here - enjoy what is left of your weekend.
There's still something special about weekends... even if it's to 'do nothing' and just enjoy the quiet, EC. And I still kept quite a few old recipes that I wasn't ready to throw out. Thinking of putting them 'as is' into a ringed binder... takes up less space than a box.
DeleteEarly on in my retirement, a friend & I had planned to quad one w/e. It rained. We're on the phone, checking our calendars trying to find another w/e to go quadding. One w/e, I had this; another w/e, she had that. Then I laughed, what about Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc? We weren't restricted to Sat/Sun. That's when I knew I was retired. And as the Dowager Crawley said in Downton Abbey - What's a weekend? Having said that, I do generally kick back on a w/e. As to baking with ingredients that need using, I recently baked cookies with granola.
ReplyDeleteUsing ingredients that need using is usually a reason for me to try something new. Right now someone bought a rather large carton of sour cream (rather than the 8oz size I usually buy)... so I'm checking recipes that use sour cream.
DeleteThe cat in the engine is a worry. I found one once with its tail shredded and the vet and I both think he had been in the engine compartment of someone's car when it was started. I got in the habit in the winter of banging on my hood before starting.
ReplyDeleteLemon curd is a favorite. I can eat it out of the jar.
Yes, we once had a kitten killed who was caught in an engine... we were both devastated. We now check every time... and if one won't get out, we don't go.
DeleteI like Lemon curd also. So far have only used it in lemon ice box pie, lemon curd cookies, and on pancakes...
Oops, thought I left a post but maybe not. The kittens in the engine reminded me of a cat I found years ago with a shredded tail. The vet and I both though she had crawled up into someone's engine to keep warm. Now days still if it is cold out, I bang on my hood before starting my engine. That picture is a good reminder.
ReplyDeleteAs for lemon curd, I can eat that straight from the jar but those cookies look yummy.
You did! I just didn't get to publish it last night as I had an unexpected ocular migraine in the evening. Sorry about that.
DeleteHappy Birthday to your son! Those lemon curd cookies look delicious.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mae.
DeleteAnd here all I did was make a blueberry pie!
ReplyDeleteThat blueberry pie sounds good! I've never made a blueberry pie, but have made a blueberry custard one...
DeleteI like black cats too and would really like to have a solid black rabbit. Since I retired, my days are so mixed up. I can't tell one day from another. Our weekends are pretty much like every other day, well, except.I usually don't hear from my daughters on the weekend. Their husbands are home and they are busy doing things. I always enjoy your posts.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter has several black rabbits... some white, some black & white, some grey. But Randall Rabbit is a beautiful color. He is the real Peter Rabbit in bunny flesh...
DeleteWow! I haven't baked cookies in such a long, long time. Nowadays, It's only blueberry muffins. Your cookies look wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWe do have quite a few feral cats in the neighborhood.
I would think the feral cats would help in keeping the pigeons away... I know the ones around here spend time on the roof.
