Finally the ice is melting...

It's Saturday and finally the ice has melted... at least most of it. This week was weird. We've had cold weather before as well as snow. But even the Arctic Freeze in 2021 was different. This was no snow, just freezing rain and sleet - so our sidewalks and driveway and roads were solid ice. You couldn't venture out without sliding all over the place - dangerous for us old folks. And since the weather never got over 28 F for most of the week, nothing melted.  It looked like snow as everything was white... but it was solid!

And it was pretty to see all the trees and bushes iced (like a fairyland), but unfortunately the heavy ice accumulation caused many trees to fall. We lost one in the backyard  -  just fell over and cracked in half. DH just cut it down this morning. And our daughter lost quite a few on their acreage - one fell on their fence and one on their well.

Here is a pic of Moose, daughter's dog trying to keep warm by the wood burning stove. They lost power overnight, but it returned by morning.

Granddaughter thought it was great as schools were closed (most businesses too). We just aren't equipped to handle this type of weather, although possibly with Climate Change, we may need to get better prepared.

But thank goodness, it's over... hopefully for the year. We just have to get through February now. I'm looking forward to April and Easter! Easter is my favorite holiday...

And of course Valentine's Day is coming. We don't do much for that.  I send cards to the grandkids (and sometimes goodies), but that's about it. Here's a pic of one of the funny cards I'm sending.

Love that pic of the middle cat!

OK... that's the week that was! Really makes you appreciate the sunshine - and even though it's only 54 F now, I'll take it! We intend to bundle up and get out of the house this afternoon. Maybe go somewhere for coffee??

Wishing you a beautiful wonderful warm Saturday... Enjoy!

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

  1. Hi Rian! We are still in the deep freeze here in Pittsburgh, but this ain't Texas and I can't believe what you guys had to go thru--I'm glad you didn't venture out when it was dangerous. Love seeing Moose up there, and your Valentines Day card made me laugh! I can't get enough of those feline critters :^)

    1. Dug, stay in and stay warm. And Moose is a gentle soul, but he does get cold! He has his own bed, but climbed into daughter's bed the night the power was off.

  2. I love that cute kitty Valentine's day card. We've been hearing in the news about all you Texans are going through. Ouch! I'm glad you're getting some sunshine now. We on the other hand here in Hawaii are suddenly getting a deluge of rain with lightning and thunderstorms. This is the rainy season and it's been mostly sunny so this rain is very helpful. Just wish it didn't all have to be in one morning.

    1. As you can tell, I don't do well in the cold. I loved Hawaii weather when we were on Oahu. I especially loved the isolated lava beaches. And I don't mind thunderstorms as long as they don't turn into hurricanes or tornadoes.

  3. I'm glad you're all okay, no house damage. Sorry about the tree, though.

We're still cold, but it's warmed up from the minus 38C windchill early this morning. It's still minus double digits, but tomorrow will be closer to 0C. Our Weather Network said it was warmer on Mars than here. Lol.

    1. Kim, I always wanted to visit Canada... we were supposed to go to Alberta for our honeymoon (that never happened). And I think I'd like to see Quebec. But the cold would kill me. Try to stay warm and do be careful if you have to be out in it. I know you're still grieving over Derry... so be good to yourself.

  4. I don't mind the cold as long as I am in my own house and we have power. I think that is the best part of retirement! Glad you made it through the storm, sorry you lost a tree.

    1. Thanks, Miss Merry. The best part of retirement for me is owning my own time... and my favorite perk is naps!

  5. Love the card. We have had weird weather here. Despite it being high summer for two days we were warned about the possibility of snow on the nearby hills. That didn't happen though our temperatures dropped. Today's top temperature is predicted to be 10C/50F hotter than yesterday.

    1. I'm guessing Climate Change is part of the reason for all the weird weather. Have you ever seen that old show "Land of the Lost"... weird weather was part of their life.

  6. I am not a fan of cold. I would have been right there next to Moose.

    1. Me too, Olga. Staying by a heat source is where I usually am during cold weather (at our house that's in the kitchen by the AGA or in the front room by the fireplace).

  7. i was thinking about you when i heard of the weather in texas, i was not sure if it impacted you. i love being forced to stay home, being "snowed in"..."iced in", i think it's fun!! and i LOVE a good rain storm, thunder and lighting a plus. the hubs thinks i am crazy. no pics of the ice??

the valentines card for the kids is adorable...they will surely know it is from you!!

in response to the knitting on my blog, the entire blanket is knit one, purl one, the same every row, once you cast on. the hat is just knitting, although many hats i make do have a pattern. the last one i made had a fabulous pattern but it was a pattern of knitting and purling. super simple stuff and i am able to watch tv while i knit with both of these!!!

    1. No, Debbie, no pics... didn't venture out at all. Tried once but ice too slippery to stand or walk on. And I used to love a good storm... now I worry about frozen pipes, lightning hitting the house, tornadoes, etc. (old age I guess).

As for the knitting, I am seriously thinking of trying to do that blanket... but I need to order yarn and I like to see and feel it... so that involves getting out to a store.

  8. I wondered if you were affected by the ice storm. I'm happy to hear the damage was limited to a few trees. Always sad to lose them, but better a tree than a person.
Were you to venture to Canada, I'd recommend the summer months. What we find hot (80-90F) would seem like spring to you I'm sure. While it can be pretty here in winter, the cold can be dreadful.
Love the Valentine card - we don't celebrate here either, but that one is great!

    1. It is sad to lose trees, but not that unexpected. And I don't think I would even think about visiting Canada in the winter.

  10. We had some icy days here in Nashville but when I saw the weather you had in your state and also in New England, I thought we were lucky. Today the sun is shining here and it will get to 61 F finally. Your Valentine kitty cat is sweet.

    1. I guess we're lucky that we don't get a lot of cold weather, Anni... and when we do, it generally doesn't last long.
