Summertime: Pizza! Jury duty! Ham's Orchard! Grandkids!

Papa John's half pepperoni, half cheese
with cheese stuffed crust!

This evening (Monday) we're having pizza! No cooking - which is great as I had a migraine this morning. Woke up with my eyes messed up (which is the beginning of an aura) and it progressed to a weird headache. I usually take an extra-strength Tylenol and  use an ice wrap... and I did, but it hung around for a while. Ended up taking a second Tylenol and it eventually went away.

And this morning our grandson had his first jury duty. You have to be there (downtown) for 8am. That alone is hard... both the 8 am and the downtown. The jury duty itself isn't so bad... can be interesting - depending. Anyway, he wasn't picked and was home by about 10:30. DH and I have done numerous jury duties over the years. I never minded the duty, only having to go downtown.

I began writing this Monday afternoon, but it is now Tuesday and DH and I went to Ham's Peach Orchard this morning. Thought Tuesday would be less crowded (not like Friday and Saturdays), but no... it was packed... with families of kids picking blackberries and buses from nearby retirement homes shopping, eating fresh peach ice-cream on the rockers outside, and staying for peach pulled pork sandwiches in the covered area out back!

DH's brother and his wife love pickles... that's the reason for all the pickle pics. They are coming up here in August and will want to visit Ham's for pickles, peaches, and home-made peach ice-cream (I'm not a pickle lover)  DH and I bought peaches, ice-cream, fresh shelled pecans, a home-made pecan pie, and peached pulled pork sandwiches.

a slice of that pecan pie

That covers Monday and Tuesday... Wednesday and Thursday we have our granddaughter with us during the summer. Here is a pic of her playing Animal crossing on her Nintendo switch at our house.

Her Switch is blue. Mine is yellow. We have been visiting each other's islands.

So, the summer is here. Busy and hot... 92 F at the moment. But I am learning to enjoy each day and what it brings - as more and more I realize that this is it - in all it's tragedy and glory - and how lucky I am to have been given the chance to take part in it.

I also saw this on Facebook and thought...

how true...

As always, thanks for reading.

It's Friday! Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

  1. Migraines are a beast aren't they? Mine tend to escalate until I am helplessly vomiting.
Peaches! mmmm. It is too long to wait for ours. Sigh.
I have never been called for jury duty. It could be fascinating.
That last sentence is profound - and an excellent reminder.

    1. They are, EC... but luckily they have gotten less painful with age. Now they tend to mess up my vision and leave a dull headache. I'm sorry yours seem so much worse. And jury duty was 'interesting' depending on the case... but glad that it's not required after a certain age.

  2. That pizza looked delicious! Was it good, Rian? I've never had Papa Johns... also, I now have a mysterious craving for pickles. :^) Well, this Sunday is my niece's graduation party--over 200 people invited, and my sister is having chicken on spits and 100 lbs of pulled pork, though I bet your peach style is interesting. Enjoyed your food post, Rian. :^)

    1. Yes, Papa John's is our favorite... and the guys like pepperoni, I'm an all cheese stickler... and even though I do like thin crust pizza, this cheese stuffed crust is really good! Your niece's graduation party sounds wonderful, Dug. It's funny, but the peach pulled pork is delicious, but you don't really taste peach (not sure how they do it).

  3. We're closing in on local peaches, here in Ohio. August is our prime month for Ashtabula peaches, grown along Lake Erie and warm with summer goodness.

    1. You know, Joanne, I'm not a big fruit eater. I do eat apples and bananas (both with peanut butter), but I'm a big fan of fresh peaches, peach ice-cream, and peach cobblers!

  4. You reminded me of a long-ago summer when we made homemade peach ice cream. Just reading this made me remember how good it was! Glad to learn you are writing again. :-)

    1. Fresh peach ice-cream is the best! Ham's makes fresh peach, fresh strawberry, and will swirl the two together for you. It's really good!

  5. You ARE busy! The peach orchard must be wonderful to visit -- such delicious goodies! I don't think there are any peach orchards here, too chilly in this region perhaps, but there are plenty in the Niagara area of the province.

This IS it, Rian. I'm struck by that more and more too, especially over the past few years, and now with Mom's passing. "Tragedy and glory" is the perfect way of expressing life.

Wishing you a glorious day and weekend. :-)

    1. The peach orchard is fun, Kim. Love sitting outside eating our ice-cream in the huge rockers... and no matter how hot it is, there's always a breeze blowing.

    1. Debbie, I tend to like white pizza too. I'm not supposed to eat too much tomato sauce because of the acid. And we don't eat it a lot. Generally our grandson who lives with us will say, "How about pizza tonight?" and he'll call it in.
I'm not generally a fan of pecan pie (my favorite pie is a rich dark chocolate), but DH likes it. Pecan pie is sometimes way too sweet. This one wasn't. It was pretty good.
And yes, we are lucky. My sister and brother didn't get the privilege... often wonder why I did.

  7. The trip to the peach orchard sounds wonderful. Lots of treats to enjoy.
I'm at an age that is a mere 10 years younger than my mother was when she passed. I think of her often and am reminded none of us is guaranteed more than today.

    1. True, no guarantees, Mae. I think about how my sister and brother didn't get to know their grandkids... and how lucky I am.

  8. Is that the same granddaughter with the kittens in your side bar?!

    1. No, that one is 21 and at Texas A&M. But it's the same granddaughter that is with the ceramic cat and also with the library statue on the sidebar. She's 10.
