A birthday breakfast...

Breakfast!
Our oldest son's birthday is today.  We had a 'get-together' with cake and ice-cream yesterday evening. But this morning I made a birthday breakfast.  Sunday breakfasts were common when DH and I were working full time. But now that we're retired, we sometimes go out for breakfast or just get by with toast and coffee. However, there are days when I get the urge to cook something special.  You know how that is... maybe it's a chocolate nut scone day or pecan or blueberry waffle day.  Today it was scrambled eggs, bacon, and apple walnut bread!

And our youngest son and his wife are expecting their first in the next few weeks. So Thanksgiving this year is taking on a whole new meaning.

I love Sunday mornings.  Actually I love Saturday mornings too.  Maybe because when I was in the 'work world' these days weren't always available. Working in the Veterinary field for 20 years, Saturdays were a normal workday and occasionally it was necessary to work Sundays too. So-oo when Saturdays and Sundays became available as 'free days', I was ecstatic... and possibly still am. Even though all days can be free in these retirement years, I choose to take classes, run errands, and do necessary things during the week, leaving my Saturdays and Sundays for 'whatever'.

This 'whatever' can be anything from artsy endeavors (sketching, photography, watercolor, clay, writing stories, etc.) to watching an old movie, reading a good book, going to grandson's soccer game, baking a new recipe, or just sleeping the day away with my cats (who are excited and all join me on the bed when I do this).  I am never bored.  But I do worry about the day when for whatever reason (age, physical or mental changes) this sad state of mind should overtake me.  I have seen it in people... and know that it can be debilitating.

However, today is today and that's a good thing.  So enjoy your day and thanks for reading my rambling thoughts...

  1. I'm usually not quite ready to face the day, so our breakfasts are simple, quick things, and anything special has to wait until I'm full of energy, sometimes after nine or so. I do like that big stove of yours, and I can see that anyone who owns such stove must love to cook!

  2. My mouth is watering just looking at this photo :) BTW...I love that stove!

I agree with you...Saturday and Sundays are special days of the week. There is that wonderful homey feeling that only the weekend can bring...even when your retired like we are :)

Keep on enjoying life and try not to worry to much about what can happen as we get even older. I know , as you do, that much can happen when we age. But then again at least we are here~~~

  3. I cant remember the last time I had a cooked breakfast ...I too tend to have toast with marmalade on it,and coffee. I think it was the last time I had an English friend drop by that I pulled out all the stops and did them a FULL Scottish breakfast....no need for lunch after one of those.lol. I know what you mean about apreciating weekend mornings ....I can imagine you and the cats having a long lie-in xx

    1. Angie, isn't toast and tea or toast and coffee wonderful? I think of them as one of my comfort foods.

  5. A while ago, I read in a blog, some wise words. Which went like this... "It's time to stop fearing what hasn't presented itself yet."

I wanted to take them to heart. 'Cause that's me. -sigh- Though I may sound perky most of the time... Too much, I do fear possibilities which have not yet presented themselves.

  6. I too sometimes worry about the future and get a case of the "what if's" or "if only's" now and then. I don't enjoy cooking but I sure do enjoy eating wonderful food. We have a breakfast from our local cafe that allows me to pick them up and bring them home to enjoy. It lasts for breakfast AND lunchtime. My real vice is espresso: gotta have it to start the day! :-)

    1. DJan, I LOVE good espresso! Have thought about buying a machine, but most are terribly expensive.

  7. Why would the day come when you are bored? It isn’t the same for everyone. Most of the things you love doing now will still be available when you are old.

I love your Aga, it’s very handsome

PS: I read all comments, they all turn up in my email inbox.

    1. Friko, I saw my mom, a very social woman (not at all like me)go from loving to dress up, go out, talk, nd attend parties, reading, etc. to 'not interested' in anything. But she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's late in life. It may be that she had it earlier and we didn't know.

  8. I too feel thae need for creative endeavors as an edge against the dementia I witnessed in my own mother. Although, she kept a very keen interest in music right to the end and that always made me feel that she was still there somehow.
I have complete and total stove envy.

    1. Olga, I don't so much 'feel the need' for creative endeavors, but more I 'fear the loss of the desire' to do them. But fear is pointless when it comes to things that may or may not happen. So, I will let it go...
