life on the homefront...

Jack

As I sit here in my computer room drinking my Sunday morning coffee, I'm thinking about making chocolate chip pancakes for our 5 and 14 year old grandsons this morning. The 5 year old is busy upstairs playing some computer game with his dad or brother... not sure which... but he's apparently enjoying it as his little voice keeps flowing down the stairs full of laughter and giggles. Sunday mornings are the only times we eat a big breakfast around here... usually eggs, grits, biscuits, and bacon or pancakes/waffles and scrambled eggs.  I used to make scones a lot (lavender or chocolate chip pecan), but haven't done this in a while... hmm-mm, maybe next Sunday.

Reading these blogs give us a glimpse into other people's lives... which on a personal level... may not seem so interesting to the average reader.  But through them I realize how similar and how different we all are. It amazes me when I read about someone who is actually interested in so many of the same things I am, people who have the same concerns, the same fears, the same joys.  It's great to share a little bit of their life on occasion.  And some lives are so-oo different. And I love reading those too! I especially like reading the blogs of those who live in other countries, those who are dedicated to being self-sufficient, artists, culinary amateurs and experts, nature lovers, cat lovers, etc. It's terrific! We have the world at our fingertips. How can anyone ever be bored?

This is a glimpse through our back gate going over into the creek and flood plane. It's the area where most of our wildlife comes from...

This is Jack laying on our kitchen counter watching me cook...

Jack and Tux standing guard on the stairs...

Ghost playing on the kitchen floor with her mouse...

19 year old Molly playing with a stick of catnip on our bed.

                  Our house in snow...

Our backdoor visitors...

19 year old Rose sunning herself in the front window...

A custard pie with my pie bird (just for show)

         Some of my favorite cups...

A chicken pot pie (with recipe in background)

Hope you have a wonderful Sunday!    : )

  1. You are definitely a cat person! Two 19-year-olds who sure look good for their age. I wish you the same, a wonderful Sunday. I love looking into the lives of others, too, and having them share with me, and I with them. And you. :-)

    1. It IS fun, isn't it?

As for the 19 yr old cats, they ARE doing well. We did lose Thibbadeaux last year. He was 19 also, but developed a thyroid problem and although his meds helped him for a bit, he eventually succumbed. But he lived a long happy life... as have Molly and Rose (but we'd still like them to stay with us for a while longer).

  2. I think humans, cross-culturally, have the same concerns, though they can be expressed in different ways. We want to be able to live comfortably, whatever that means to us, we want to feel fulfilled, feel productive, feel like we've made some small contribution. At least that's my take. How those things come to fruition for each of us is different, of course.

To me, it seems everyone has a more interesting, grander life than I do. LOL. My days are so routine, with the exception of the times of stress and trauma, there's not much to distinguish one day or one year from another. But perhaps many of us can say the same. :-)

Maybe this is why I enjoy blogs that celebrate the simple, everything things--it helps me to focus on those things, to appreciate those things, in my own life.

    1. I did drop by your "book blog" and loved both books... and the illustrations. I have read all of Jan Karon's Mitford series, but have never come across this particular book. Will be checking out both of these at Barnes and Noble soon. Thanks!

And BTW, I love your background...

    1. I too consider you a friend, Angie... and am enjoying learning the difference in our culinary names, measurements, and methods.

I should take a picture of Ghost on our gray slate floors... THEN you would really see why we called her Ghost.

Yes, we weren't aware of "Pie in the Sky" when it first came on TV, but I saw it advertised somewhere and had to get the DVD's.

  6. Your cats are marvelous company, I'm sure. Right up with your grandchildren. Your 14 year old grandson and my 14 year old granddaughter are up to the same thing this morning. The more things change the more they stay the same.

    1. Loved your cats and birds story! Just came from your blog and we had a similar incident happen with a baby blue jay that we had rescued and one of our cats... and 3 kids chasing the cat through the house one Sunday morning with the bird in it's mouth!

  8. I so agree with you. I also enjoy looking into the lives of other bloggers. When I retired it was a relief to find others who were going through the same transition and strugglling with the same issues. We're all traveling the path to the future and it is fun when our paths intersect. Have a great weekend.

    1. Yes, we are all on the same journey... although our roads to get there may differ. I find that it helps to talk about it and share our 'happy surprises' as well as our 'bumps in the road'.

  9. Rian, this was a beautifully done post. I especially love the frame you have there for viewing wildlife. Was it by design?
Also the snap of Ghost brought a tear to my eye--so very like (albeit somewhat thinner)our beloved Jaxson. Always a good memory, even with a tear or two.

    1. By design? No, not really... but it does frame the creek nicely. Unfortunately with the West Nile virus around these last few years, we don't go down there much due to the mosquitoes around the creek.

  11. Now I know why I like you so much...you are a cat lover...me to. My Lucy looks like your Ghost and my Ethyl looks a lot like your Rose. If possible I would have another kitty but I am limited to only two in the apartment. You have a lovely home....I am like you not being bored with blogger friends at our finger tips. I do believe we are all kindred spirits . :)

  12. I read about your six cats on "Wheres my effing Pony blog and had to come and visit you. I used to have 6 cats. Truthfully I used to have 24 cats. I'm down to 2.5 now. The .5 was born and raised here but he only visits in the morning for a bowl of food and a little milk and then hes gone for another 24 hours. I think hes cheating on me with another cat lady.

    1. We have 6 'inside cats'.... and about 6-10 'outside ferals/roamers? that come and go all day long in the back. One or two I believe also have second or third homes in the neighborhood, but we do provide a safe harbor for the homeless ones.
