It is Saturday, February 20, 2021... Temps have risen to 53 F!! And Yes! Coffee delivery has arrived!! Things are definitely looking up.
Also... we were contacted yesterday about the Covid vaccine and have an appointment next week! What a difference a day makes!
Not that the failure of Texas Utility System during this Arctic air crises is over - because it's not. There are still people without power, still some without water - although now with the temps up and roads clearing, people can actually get out and find help... or others can get to them. But there are broken water pipes all over, homes and businesses flooded, and tons of insurance issues. It will be quite the mess to clean up... and may take years.
To be fair, this Artic storm was unprecedented. And everyone will blame someone else. But... what it boils down to is that the system must be winterized... so that it can't happen again and this will of course be expense, but it must be done. After this week, I can't imagine anyone thinking otherwise.

Comfort food requested: Peach Pecan dump cake!
Sending out loving vibes to everyone. Hope you are all well and safe and please, please, please, let there be some breathing space between now and whatever happens next...
Hugs (virtual)
Rian
I was told by someone here in Denton that it was just a four percent increase in use that threatened the system.. And the costs of buying extra power at the last minute were exorbitant. I'm not quite at fifty three but I'll take the sunny melting forties..and no water boiling..believe me.
ReplyDeleteThe state needs to 'winterize'... whatever that takes (IMO). We can't let it happen again.
DeleteI'm so glad you're safe and well and hope your family is too. The news images are terrible; my prayers to All Beings affected. 🙏
ReplyDeleteKim, we were very lucky. But yes, it shouldn't have happened. We should have 'winterized' the system before this. People are suffering. Thanks for your prayers.
DeleteIt sure is nice to read the encouraging words Rian, for you & yours at least. From your last posting to this one, I think a lot of us learned just how devastated Texas has been. My god, as if the pandemic wasn't bad enough... seeing the damages & loss every night on the news has been unreal. Anyway, that dump cake looks delish and I'm glad its warmer, at least!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dug. Things are better with the temps up. However, the cost for the damages is going to be terrific. Hopefully FEMA will help some with the costs for those affected.
DeleteThe dump cake is so-oo easy... and so-oo good. I will post the simple recipe soon. It's great to have during the pandemic as there are only 4 ingredients.
I found a recipe and will try it.
ReplyDeleteIt's only a box of cake flour, 2 cans of peaches, 3/4 cup unsalted butter, and pecans!
DeleteFirst the peaches, then the cake flour, pour on the melted butter, and sprinkle a few pecans on top. (I also sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar over the peaches and a little more over the top before baking in a 9X13 pan at 350 for about 45-55 mins. Easy peasy!
Amen! And I am so happy to hear that you have turned the corner in Texas, although it will take a long time to get back to anything approaching normal. Our appointments for Covid shots were canceled, and I've learned that even those needing second doses have to wait. :-(
ReplyDeleteFunny (or maybe not so funny) but just as I'm reading your comment, we get a text telling us that our appointments have been changed due to delays...
DeleteThat is good news that the temperatures have risen to the 50s. The pandemic is such a hard thing to deal with, and then the freezing temps and problems with power on top of that, it is tough.
ReplyDeleteIt makes you begin to wonder if the universe is playing with us... let's see now, what else can we send to wake them up to help them get their priorities straight.
DeletePhew, so glad you are on an upswing and that you didn't have the structural damage some have had. Better yet that you can now be warm with basic necessities. The images coming out of Texas were horrifying. Praying your state recovers and those suffering find relief--soon. Be well and warm.
ReplyDeleteAgain, we have been very lucky. But apparently the groceries are still in short supply as we put in our orders and only received less than half of what we needed today... no actual 'food' stuff, nothing frozen, some cleaning supplies, COOKIES, and a few canned veggies. Oh, but we got our usual supply of cat food! The cats have not been hurting for food - a little chilly outside for a bit even with the heat lamps, but they seem to have weathered it well.
DeleteCongrats on all fronts, esp. for the vaccine shot!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tom. Our vaccine appointment has been changed twice since we heard, but it's still good news.
DeleteI'm glad to hear that all is well with you and yours. It will be a long time before everyone is cleaned up, but it sounds like there is a lot of support beginning to be available. That's definitely good news.
ReplyDeleteGlad to that you've got your appointments for your Covid vaccine. Take care, stay well!
Thanks, Mae. We seem to have gotten through very well compared to many others. And yes, it's going to be a long haul on the clean up. And hopefully the Texas system will be winterized now.
Delete53 degrees must have felt like summer after the cold you've been through. So glad it warmed up. We have actually had 2 days of sunshine and I am so thankful. More rain predicted for tomorrow but then more sun. The peach pecan cake sounds wonderful! Glad you can get the vaccine. We were supposed to get our second last Thursday but was postphomed because of icy roads. We now go this Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteYes, if all goes well, we will get the first vaccine next week. Hope you get your second tomorrow. Take care and enjoy the sunshine!
DeleteI am so glad to read that you are OK. It is also great that you and your husband got the call to get the vaccine. That had to be wonderful news for you both.
ReplyDeleteThe scenes that we see in Texas were so terribly sad and nothing we would expect to see, except for maybe a hurricane. I know there is much to do to fix not only the problems that caused the grid to fail, but I think of all the individuals and families who have lost so much and they may never completely recover.
Yes, and actually they changed the vaccine appointment to tomorrow, so we will be getting it sooner than we thought.
DeleteAs for the scenes you see in Texas due to the weather, yes... it is a mess. But although it will take a while to recover, it seems like we are getting help from all over - which is a good thing.
Hope things get better, soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks, John.
