a change of plans...

Our laptop crashed Monday right after my last blog posting. So off it went to the Geek Squad at Best Buy's. We finally got it back Thursday afternoon.

And Tuesday (which was when we planned to go to Ham's Peach Orchard) was rainy when we got up, so we decided to postpone that little excursion until next week.

Instead we headed for the Mall and Eataly's again for walking and coffee. Granddaughter came with us. She decided to try some coconut gelato this time... while I had my espresso hit and DH had his black coffee.

Since we didn't have our laptop this week, we couldn't do our online curbside pickups...  so grocery shopping got postponed too. I mean, we could have gone to the grocery and shopped inside with our masks on, but we 've gotten so spoiled with online shopping that we really didn't want to... unless fixing the laptop was going to take longer than expected.  Luckily it didn't.

And I have to admit too that that awful tragedy in Florida where that Condo collapsed has taken a lot of my attention this week. How could that have happened?  Watching the video on TV is so appalling...  it almost defies belief.  I continue to pray that they will find more people alive (as hopeless as it seems when you see the devastation).  But miracles do happen...  and I'm certainly praying for one.

I know this is short, but just wanted to let people know that I haven't  kept up with blogs or made comments these lasts few days due to our laptop problem. But hopefully that is fixed now and life 'as we know it these days' can resume.

Also...  when dusting today, I came across my old critter chess set we made as a clay project years ago. I still like it... (although it's a bit rough).

I made the King and Queen (center) a dog and cat, Bishops were  rats, Knights were rabbits, Rooks were snakes... and Pawns were birds. It was a fun project (although it took a bit of time).

Well, stay safe... and have a good weekend!

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

  1. our laptop died several months ago and had to get a new one, it was over 12 years old so it served it's purposes quite well. did my first bisque, glaze in more than a year cause I was running low on stock, feel like I wasted a covid year and regret it, but I can only go forward not backwards. we've never done curbside; I'd rather pick out my own grocery items especially produce than have someone else do it; we don't have smart phones so probably couldn't do it anyway, all this time we've just gone to the grocery and other locations as usual and washed our hands when we got back, so far so good, we don't have any restrictions here in GA any longer, yet we still see folks driving alone in their cars with masks on. We're back at the farmers market and little to no folks with masks on, thank goodness, it's nice to breathe (be) free again. be well

    1. Our laptop is about 4-5 years old... so luckily we didn't have to get a new one, just a new hard drive. We now have a solid state instead of a traditional.

As for the groceries, I would have agreed with you before the pandemic, but the people who pick out our groceries at Central market follow our instructions so well... when I tell them medium size potatoes, not huge" etc. And everything we get is so well chosen and fresh. And they keep a list of what you have previously purchased, so I can see that in case I forget something (which is always likely).

And we will continue to wear our masks... it is no hardship for us... (doesn't restrict our breathing at all) and if it could possibly help not spread the virus, that's enough. I find the mask even helps me not to cough as much in the car (the AC cold air seems to make me cough when in the car).

  2. I didn't recognize that cookware you showed in the last post, interesting piece. My your family is like mine, we all have dogs and one daughter chickens too. Your chess pieces are marvelous; what a keepsake. I agree with you- I think we should clean out our own clutter while we can. Most children find it, if not tiresome, very sad.

    1. Thanks for the comment, Jocelyn. And I will endeavor to clean out my own clutter... although I never seem to get too far.

  3. Love your very creative chess set! Yeah, I think we've all gotten spoiled about certain things during Covid. We don't want to go anywhere, except to get our curbside pickup take-out dinner.

    1. I know... don't know whether that's good or bad. Sometimes I think it's good that we can survive and be happy at home for the most part, then other times I wonder if the pandemic has made some people prefer to be at home than out and about...

  4. I'm glad the Geek Squad was able to fix your laptop. Dad uses them for his devices; it must be worth it. I wonder if they could do anything with my 3-year old laptop that's as slow as molasses already, freezing when opening folders, etc.

RE: grocery shopping: Except for the few times I've used InstaCart (because I don't have a vehicle), I've had to go into stores. Ontario just entered phase 2 of reopening, but when I went into our local Farm Boy yesterday, it was a ZOO. No more sanitizing carts, no limit on customers in the store, no waiting for the person ahead of you to finish at the cash before you put your own groceries on the belt. I didn't think that's what "phase 2" meant, and I was really thrown off, VERY uncomfortable by the free-for-all. (I did get my second vaccination yesterday, but it will be 2 - 3 weeks before I reach full immunity, and then there's the Delta variant anyway....).

Anyway, I hope you get to the orchard soon; take care!

    1. The Geek Squad has been very helpful over the years. And they can sometimes fix whatever is causing it to be slow without you having to bring it in. I'd check with your dad as to what he thinks.
As for the grocery shopping, we use our curbside pickup for our weekly groceries, and occasionally now go into the stores to pick up something (but still wearing our masks). I hope you get your second vaccine soon... and continue to be careful.

    1. We were only without our laptop for a few days, but sure missed it. Hope your ankle is doing better.

  6. So glad they revived your laptop. We do get dependent on our computers don't we? I am convinced I will continue grocery pickup when this is all over. Wonderful service.
That is such a clever chess set. Well done.

    1. Hi Patti, I sure did miss our laptop. And we plan to continue our curbside grocery pickup also... at least with Central Market. They do a great job.

  7. Rian, that is awful about that Florida condo--I watch the updates on that with dread. On a more positive note, your granddaughter is very lovely little person and your "critter chess set" is pretty awesome!! I like your kind of art :^)

    1. My kind of art is a bit odd. When I started out working with clay, I planned on doing more with throwing on the wheel... and did a lot of plates, cups, etc. But found that I enjoyed sculpting little critters more than throwing, thus, my cheeky chickens, etc.

  8. I have all kinds of questions about that Condo Tragedy after watching the surveillance and that first responders who'd been at the Twin Towers said it reminded them of that. In fact, when I saw the building's collapse, it reminded me immediately of Oklahoma City tragedy. They aren't even locating many bodies, let alone survivors, so that's very strange considering it was very early and likely occupied by not only residents, but their Summer Guests vacationing with them too. I cannot even imagine the level of anxiety the Loved Ones and Friends are feeling as each day drags by with not much positive to sustain Hope! As for computer crashes, my Phone crashed so that it didn't receive Internet and I felt Lost... which is odd since it took me so long to go from an old flip phone to a smart phone in the first place! Just shows how dependent we're becoming on this technology even if like me, one tends to be quite tech challenged and not learning all that much to keep pace. That Grandbaby of yours, couldn't be any Cuter in her Mask, her Eyes Smile even when you cannot see her Mouth.

    1. That condo tragedy is still unbelievable. It's horrible to even think about. I've been praying for those people and their families... but there is so little hope.
And we are very dependent on technology. I worry (maybe not worry... but wonder) what will happen if/when something takes it all down.
And yes, granddaughter doesn't mind wearing her mask. She wears it at the mall when we're walking and inside our house when we have our heads together playing computer games.

    2. You know, Kiddos haven't been resistant to Mask Wearing at all... it's the Big Adult 'Babies' that whine about it most! *LOL* Kids have a natural tendency to easier adaptation to almost any circumstances, they keep their Joy during much of it too! I do think something will happen to take it all down, this Technology we've become so very dependent upon. It's not a matter of if, but when, it will happen. The Ransomware is the new Piracy of this Age and our Adversaries know how they can cripple any Economy by hitting the Servers that fuel Industries and necessities. Being Retired from the DAs Office of the 5th largest County in the Nation, even before my Retirement, we had to set up a Tech Crimes Bureau due to the increase even way back then of Cybercrimes. I do think Modern Companies need to think about backups and alternatives for when they're hit... which they will be... eventually.

  9. Your granddaughter is a little cutie! I'm sure it is lots of fun spending time with her.

Glad you were able to get your computer up and running again. Ain't technology grand?

    1. Thanks, Mae. She is a sweetheart... and even though she has both glasses and hearing aids, she doesn't miss much. I do enjoy spending time with her.
Yes, technology is grand! It is a great way to stay in touch. I do miss it... when it's unavailable.

  10. Your granddaughters eyes are smiling. She is adorable.
Masks are rarely seen here in VT now that our vaccination rate is so high but I still feel inclined to wear mine in the grocery store. I never took the order on line/curbside pick up option, but I did like the early open hours just for seniors while it lasted.

    1. Olga, we used the early open hours for seniors for picking up DH's Rx. I really did not like having to be there for 6am... but I still appreciated the effort.
