my year(s) in review... for what it's worth

Tom's post, "A Year in Review"

was a great post. However, I don't think I could go month to month saying what happened in 2022 (may not even be able to do that for  last week).

I seem to have lost the last 3 years (2020 - 2023)...  to some extent. We certainly didn't do anything the first 2. Perhaps we've come out of exile a little in 2023. Our kids came by several times this year. We stopped wearing masks around the family (but still wear the out in public), and we have gone out to restaurants a few times lately.

I made one road trip to visit our son this past year - but it was only about 2.5 hours away. Haven't been on a plane yet... hope Southwest gets their act together because I hope to use them this spring or summer. Right now air flight just seems too big a hassle.

Knock on wood, DH and I haven't been sick. This alone has been great. We have the usual complaints for people our age (77), but these are minor inconveniences that come with age. We are more than happy to have survived to this point.

Something I have learned these last 3 years is that common sense is 'not so common'.  This may be the most significant thing I've learned from both the pandemic and the political atmosphere.

As for what I expect from 2023... not sure I have any expectations. It would be nice if Covid would just disappear, the 2 political parties could come to terms, the war in the Ukraine would end, and the erratic weather the world's been experiencing would stop. But... do I expect that to happen? No.

But I would sincerely hope that somehow people have learned that what is important is people... not power. We need to 'come together' not pull apart.  That's the way to solve things (IMO).

Enough of my ramblings. Nothing of real content here. I don't make New Year's resolutions... unless getting through the next year is a resolution.

I love sharing my thoughts with you. Can't imagine what you must think of me (naive possibly?), but it doesn't matter. Writing them down is therapeutic. So, it's helpful for me, and I imagine if it's too boring, you would simply stop reading. But thank you for being there just the same.

Here are some funny memes I found (at least I thought they were funny) :

isn't it??

this goes for 2022 also...

Hugs (virtual),

Rian

    1. Thanks, EC, we do not need a bunny, I know... but it is tempting.

    1. Thanks, DJan, not a whole lot going on in our life (a lot more inside my head)... but that's OK. And you are right that we may very well be kindred spirits...

  4. Rian, I think what Maebeme said sums up my own feelings as well. You're very humble (which is nice) but I enjoy reading what you have to say. (I enjoy your photos too, especially ones with critters!) Hope your 2023 is everything you want it to be, and Happy New Year. :^)

    1. I'm not sure about the humble part, Dug. It's just that we don't exactly live exciting lives (and may not want to) so, it seems odd at times that people are interested in reading. But they do say that everyone has a story to tell and I guess that's true (I have many many stories in my head - but those are all fictional - mostly). Happy 2023!!

  6. Happy new year to you and your family, Rian!

Those bunnies are so adorable; I'd find it hard to resist them.

I wish 2023 would bring a LOT less stupidity and division, globally, but like you, I don't think that will happen. So we'll have to muddle along and do the best we can, as humans always have.

I couldn't do a month by month review of 2022, either. All I remember is slogging through the work days, the retirement of two long-time co-workers, my aunt moving to Halifax and now living with Mom, and far too many vet appointments for Derry (eight or nine). Everything else is a blur. :-P

I hope this new year brings you continued good health, and much love and laughter!

    1. Thanks, Kim. It's been a strange 3 years... hopefully we're due a good one in 2023, but only time will tell. I do wish you and Derry a very Happy New Year, good health, and also much love and laughter too!

  7. You sound very wise to me. We are still home bodies at a time when I thought we would be traveling the country. I did go crazy and return to volunteering for my church charity one afternoon a week. After the second week, I brought home our first case of covid. Luckily the vaccine and three boosters only meant we slept 10 hours a day and had a mild cold, but I am more cranky that it happened and mad that I didn't catch it at a fancy restaurant or wild and crazy party or a rock concert. Bah humbug.

    1. The truth is we don't care much for fancy restaurants, wild crazy parties, or concerts... but I get your point. Catching Covid while volunteering at your church seems a bit unfair doesn't it? But luckily you were vaccinated... and didn't end up in the hospital. Wishing you a Happy Healthy New Year!

  9. Dear Rian, I've just visited five blogs today--for the first time in a month that's sort of been dispiriting for me health wise--and all I've read from five women bloggers, you among them, whom I respect so deeply, has inspired me to ask of my body a little more effort this year, a little more motivation, and a little more graciousness also when I find myself feeling less than normally healthy.

As a teenage friend of mine says, all five of you are "Awesome!" In your postings, each of you pulled together, in some way, the past year and put it in perspective for me. And each of you, also, looked forward to 2023 with the same hopes in your heart & mind that are in mine.

Like you, I feel as if I lost the last three years. I hope I live long enough to reflect on them and the way they touched my life so that I can find the good deep down in the fog of it all.

However, during those years, you produced a new book that has delighted and entertained its readers. I call that a great accomplishment. Congratulations and may your creativity continue to gift all of us who read your blog and treasure your thoughts. Peace from Dee and the cats: Ellie, Maggie, and Maggie

    1. Dee, you are a special lady whose kind words do lift me up. I do so hope you have a safe healthy happy 2023... and I do keep you and your dear friend in my prayers nightly. I find reading the posts from those bloggers that have become dear to me help make my day a little brighter. Just knowing what is going on in their lives and sharing concerns feels like we are more than just blogger friends.

    2. Dear Rian, I so agree with you. I've been blogging since 2011 and two or three of those I began to follow 12 years ago are still blogging. Like you, I feel that I know what's happening in their lives and where their thoughts and concerns and dreams and empathy lie. And since 2011, I've met others, like you, whose life journey enriches my own. And what is so true for me--a real recluse because of not driving and because of living so far from the home of my heart--is that reading the posts of others just opens up my life and helps me become less self-absorbed. What a blessing all of you are. Peace from Dee and the cats to you and all those who depend on your graciousness.

  10. i am going to go and read tom's post, i don't follow him!! i enjoy your posts, they are not boring...

we flew once, it was kinda' an emergency...i made too much of it and really did not want to go!! the other trip we took, on the cog railroad, the hubs got covid and passed it on to me. this was the second time i had it!! i will never fly southwest, we use united when we do fly and i actually like that airline. my son flew home for thanksgiving and christmas and did very well, just a little turbulence for christmas, when we were all having those wind storms!!

now it is 60 degrees here, for several days, i agree, the weather has been crazy!! i also agree that writing things down is therapeutic, i enjoy keeping track of my comings and goings and reading about yours as well!! the bunnies are adorable, happy 2023, i have a good feeling about this year!!

    1. Debbie, we've always flown Southwest and even though we haven't flown anywhere in the last few years, we never had a problem with them. I don't know what's going on now, but I sure hope they work it out. I actually love to fly... even though I'm a bit nervous about takeoffs and landings. It's just so amazing to be up in the clouds. But... getting through the airports these days is a hassle.
Thanks so much for the game info. I do plan to check it out. And as for the bunnies, they ARE adorable.

  11. Happy New Year, Rian! I agree with you 100% on all you said.

And oh yes, those are the cutest bunnies.

As for remembering what I did these past years. I forget. sigh... Thank goodness I record them on my blog.

    1. Yes, Kay, it's amazing how blogs can help us record our lives. I've written a journal for years before writing on a web page... then blogging came along. It's interesting to go back to the same time a year ago (or more) and see what was going on then.
