Beautiful bell peppers, summer plans, and plants...

I had to show you these beautiful bell peppers. Bell peppers must be doing really well this year as they are all over the place... and just gorgeous! We bought these to roast with our brisket tonight, but they were so large we ended up using half of each and saving the other half to stuff later. We had brisket, roasted peppers, fresh asparagus, and mashed potatoes. All really good!

This week I've been working on de-cluttering. I went through 2 boxes of old photos, ancestry stuff, and some things saved without (any remembered) rhyme or reason.  I have to admit it's hard for me to throw out things... but I'm working on it.

I'm almost finished my 2nd round of antibiotics. Hopefully I won't have to do anymore. But still waiting on results from Pulmonologist's test... and have to go to a sleep clinic soon to be tested for sleep apnea (again). But we did go to the Senior Center on Friday so we did get some walking in.

Last day of school is at the end of this week. We will probably have our granddaughter spending part of the summer with us. So I'm making plans for our days together. She is 12 and we need to find things to do that don't involve her cell phone 24/7. But luckily she loves to walk... and we both enjoy hunting for bugs, frogs (she now has 2: Suki and Rospos), etc. Also thinking we may explore cooking and art a bit more ...

And possibly re-establish books into her agenda also - something she used to love before the infamous cell phone took over. Lately reading has occupied most of my time over art... not sure why... but sometimes that's just how it goes.

And of course my plants are slowly taking over my front room (just bought another grow light!).

this area has 2 windows so they do pretty good

These last 2 pics show the 2 grow lights we have on these... as not sure if the one window is enough light. Time will tell.

And just a pic or two to celebrate my dad's birthday, May 25th.
He was born in London, England in 1907 and died in New Orleans when he was 75. He was the general manager of a stone company that built churches and other buildings around New Orleans and the surrounding boyous. Some of my childhood memories are driving around with him visiting the various churches to check on the stone. Still miss him...

Going to close this now before this gets too long. Just wanted to say that the feral cats and kittens are doing fine. Kittens coming up to the back porch on their own now. More box turtles coming up too. And yesterday I had to chase a coyote out when I saw him through my kitchen window while cooking. Our fence is 6 foot and since it's been fixed, don't know how he gets in... unless he jumps it? Crows still coming in front... and still fussing if DH is late putting the peanuts out.

Take care and enjoy the long weekend!

Hugs (virtually),

Rian

  1. Rian, your pepper pics are so nice to see--enjoyed seeing all your plants too, and reading about your granddaughter's upcoming visit and those wonderful feral kittens and box turtles. Keeping my fingers crossed regarding your health, and I hope you and DH have a wonderful Memorial Day with all the critters and fixin's. :^)

    1. Hi Dug! Forgot to post a pic of our new American flag hanging on our house! Had to buy a new one as our old one was getting raggedy (kind of fits the political atmosphere, but still couldn't keep it like that). We're not into doing much celebrating. DH is stuffing the pepper halves and I have a roast out ready to cook... but that's about it. Hope you do or cook something special and blog about it. Look forward to your blogs (and comments). : )

  2. Your peppers are gorgeous! You are so far ahead of our planting season.
I have lots of grandkids and have some ideas for you. I have instituted SSR at my house. This stands for Sustained Silent Reading and I had a teacher who used to do this in the classroom. It is one of my best school memories. These days I use it for a quiet break when I am overrun with noisy grandsons. They are supposed to bring a book, but I have a collection from book sales that they can choose from too. And I get to read silently with them.
My granddaughter came for a week when she was 12. She enjoyed visiting thrift shops. She was teaching herself to knit by youtube and we did find several yard stashes at Goodwill. Just some ideas for you.

    1. Love the silent reading time (no cell phones allowed). I'm not sure about thrift shops with mine. She does love making beaded jewelry (she also uses youtube for this), so possibly a craft shop. I may get some cooking, clay work, and painting in too.

  3. Nice-looking Dad. I didn't know you had to go around and "check" the stone. There's a lot in New Orleans. And froggers have learned to come to your back door? Must be Kermit's relatives! Linda in Kansas

    1. You know, LInda, I don't know if my dad had to go around and check the stone... or he just wanted to make sure it looked good. I was just happy to share the trips with him. And frogs don't come to our back door here... box turtles do. But we do have a lot of frogs around. We did have a huge toad that came to our back in Florida. He loved the dry cat food.

  4. The summer will be fun with your granddaughter. I'm all for nature exploration and books, books, books!

I LOVE your plant corner, wish this place had decent natural light.

Fingers crossed for good test results and for your upcoming sleep apnea testing.

    1. Thanks, Kim. You know the grow lights for the plants are not that expensive... you might give them a try. I order mine from Amazon.

    1. Thanks, EC. I do love books and reading... and I read your post, but even though I didn't leave a comment, loved the pictures of your kitties!

  6. Rian, I enjoy your posts so much and look forward to them. I've got to keep the little clip about the ants and worms and such. Just this week my daughter called and said she was so tired of slugs in her garden. Do you kill them, she asked. Oh Lynn, you know me, I can't kill anything. The poor slug can't help that he was born a slug. Mama, I am just like you, my thoughts exactly. :) Your dad is a nice-looking man. I think you favor him.

    1. Henny, thanks so much for your kind words. My daughter and I feel the same way too. And I appreciate your comment about my dad... as I've often wondered who in the family I look like.

  8. What wonderful memories of your father! Have you ever driven around New Orleans to see the churches and other buildings he was part of building?
I hope the coyote stays away, those kittens wouldn't stand a chance.

    1. Not since I married and moved away - 57 years ago. I have gone to see the building my sister was the architect for in N.O. As for the coyotes, the kittens are pretty careful... although in years past, I have seen them grab a kitten.

  9. i love peppers, prepared in any way. growing up, we only ate green peppers, the other colored ones are so much better. it is so nice that you are so aware of finding activities for your granddaughter, i would love to have someone like yourself to teach me how to paint. you will teach her things her parents haven't, different lives....different stories and live lessons. i enjoyed seeing your home garden, much bigger than mine!! have a good week!!

  10. Hi Debbie! We love bell peppers too... all colors! And my inside plants are doing well. I want more! We didn't plant the outside trug this year. It gets too hot too fast here for things to grow. They just burn up. Maybe I'll try in the fall...
