It's only Monday and I'm tired...

chess pieces with first coat of under glaze on bases

OK, it's Monday... about 4:30 pm and I'm tired.  We had to have our 32 chess pieces ready by this morning's class. Most of us did. Some didn't. But I was impressed with some of the other students' results.  Now this is just the sculptured clay forms, nothing fired, nothing glazed, etc.  And we don't have the chess boards made yet. So even though this was a first deadline (and  critique), it's by no means the last. Since my pieces were finished, I started painting the bases with under glaze today. I'm doing the bases in two shades of green and the actual pieces will be shaded with blackbird stain... eventually.

Since I got home from the studio around 2, I've eaten lunch, watched "Good Neighbors' (which we recorded since it comes on at 11 pm here and I can't make it past 9 most nights) and "The Good Wife" which I also missed. Now I'm catching up on my blogs and making potato salad to go with baked ham and beans tonight.

I did see "Dalton Abbey" and have to say that I can't believe that Matthew is dead.  He is dead, isn't he? They wouldn't make it look like he's dead, but not be...    It just won't be the same without him in the show. But of course I'll continue to watch. I'm not a big TV fan, but this is definitely one of my favorites.

Time is up for blogging today. I didn't post one of my old stories, but here is a poem I wrote while on retreat a few years back.  It's called : In the Company of Women.

  1. Yes, he's dead. They had to write him out of the series since he (and Lady Sybil) chose not to sign on for another three years. I was a bit shocked, too, but trust me: he's dead... Are those bird like things the pawns? :-)

    1. oh... I am sorry that he's leaving the series. It's such a good show and has gotten so popular. Hopefully he has better plans and doesn't regret it.

And yes, the 'bird like things' are the pawns. The reason there are 9 is that we were told to make a few extra as some will not make it out of the kiln. Anything thin (like wings)can break when barely touched or bumped against while still clay.

    1. At the end of retreat (which was only 3 days) most of us were not ready to get back into the thick of things (work, families, etc.). We needed more 'silence', more 'me time', more 'one-on-One' time.

And I guess it's age... but you're right, by afternoon I'm almost always ready for a nap 'regardless'.

    1. I think when you feel something deeply, it can be expressed well in poetry (or any other form of art). Whether it's good or not (subjective) is another story... but if it expresses what is felt, then I think it works.

  6. I was beginning to wonder if your blog, was where I read the entry, concerning Magic. (Yes, it is.) I commented on it, by writing to an email addy. Wondering if you ever received my email?

When going to all your links, it's obvious that you are a multi-talented lady, and have many activities. Wonderful! But you are making me tired!!! ,-)

    1. I checked my email to see if I missed it, but there's nothing there. So... no, I didn't receive it. You can email me as I've received emails from other bloggers, but perhaps you used an old email address from one of my previous websites?

And thank you, I don't know about the talented part, but as you can see, I DO love to write...

  7. no wonder you're tired. That's a busy day and those arelovely chess pieces. :-)

I didn't see the Downton Abbey Christmas special, but I gather that Dan Stevens who played Matthew was offered a part in a Broadway production.

  8. Perpetua, thanks for the info on Dan Stevens. I also heard that there was something in the Dallas Morning News about it this morning, but I haven't read it yet.

  9. Your chess pieces display your artistic ability. Wonderful. Will you show us the finished work? I hope so. Your poem "In the Company of Women" is thoughtful and compassionate. It made me think of all the women I know who need love and acceptance right where they are. Thank you.

    1. Yes, of course I will show my finished pieces and some of the other students' too... that is, if they make it through the kiln.

  10. Oh, I know. I was so distressed that Matthew was killed like that although you could see it coming as he drove along. No happily ever afters in that family.
I loved your poem. I seek out silence whenever I can.

    1. Yes, Olga, you COULD see it coming as he drove, could't you? My thoughts were, "...no,no,no!"
